Guitar Hero: Aerosmith announced (with free GH III DLC promo)
Activision hopes you really, really like Aerosmith. Their upcoming Guitar Hero game has been announced, and it is all about Aerosmith. According to the press release, "Guitar Hero®: Aerosmith®, the first game built around the legendary music of America's Greatest Rock 'N Roll Band: Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer. Slated for release this June, this latest installment from the franchise with the #1 best-selling video game in 2007, puts players in the shoes of Perry (guitar), Whitford (guitar) and Hamilton (bass), as they rock out alongside frontman Tyler and drummer Kramer. Gamers will experience Aerosmith's GRAMMY® winning career, from their first gig to becoming rock royalty, in a way that no other entertainment vehicle offers."
Wow. That was the most PR-injected crow we've eaten in quite some time. We're not going to make judgments on the band (that's up to you), but to make an entire game around a single band? We doubt that's going to really appeal to most gamers, especially long-time fans of the series.
Thankfully, Guitar Hero III owners will be able to get something out of this announcement. Free DLC content will be available for the game this weekend. And yes, it's predictably Aerosmith related. Aerosmith's "Dream On." will be available from the PLAYSTATION Store for free from February 16-18.

man what a stupid idea.
Mike Warren @ Feb 15th 2008 11:51AM
It's a great idea. But make it an expansion set for $30 or less, THEN do other bands as well. An expansion of Boston, Bon Jovi, or Van Halen would totally kick-ass! As long as they don't do suck-ass bands that no ones ever heard of. (like some of the ones on Rock Band.)
Tru-blu @ Feb 15th 2008 9:10AM
Don't wanna close my eyes
Don't wanna fall asleep
'Cause I'd miss you, baby
And I don't wanna miss a thiiiiiiiiinng....
Matt B @ Feb 15th 2008 9:12AM
I just want to play Angel, my favorite 'smith song.
Vic @ Feb 15th 2008 9:13AM
Worst...
Idea...
Ever...
My god what are they thinking? Did they run out of bands or songs? This will flop HUGE! and I own Guitar Hero 3 for the PS3 and I will NOT be getting that game at all. Way to ruin a franchise guys.
Roto13 @ Feb 15th 2008 9:13AM
At least this is basically a guarantee that there won't be any of that ridiculous screamo music from GH III.
If they try to charge me $60 for an expansion set again, though, they can keep on dreaming.
Deathalo @ Feb 15th 2008 2:48PM
You mean they can "Dream On" ;P
Carlton @ Feb 15th 2008 9:18AM
Wow. If it only concentrates on the music they released in the '70s then it could be okay... er... I guess.
It certainly sounds like commercial suicide though. I'm sure as hell not gonna fork out the cash for a full game just so I can tap along to Sweet Emotion.
Dan Davis @ Feb 15th 2008 9:53AM
Rock Band FTW!
GRT @ Feb 15th 2008 10:19AM
Dream On is free 16-18th? But would that mean the Playstation store would have to be updated on the 16th? That's not a Thursday...
Golds @ Feb 15th 2008 10:35AM
I think activision does not understand that if they want to put this crap out, make it 20.00 or less and in the PSN store.
I will not buy a "areosmith only" expansion pack.
what a terrible Idea.
I wish they would pust some time into the current GH3. I cant stand the way rockband plays, but it gets better support....
koehler83 @ Feb 15th 2008 10:41AM
Personally I love this idea. I love the band and I love Guitar Hero. For me its a win.
Obviously it wont appeal to everyone. Nothing does. In my opinion, it beats the hell out of Guitar Hero: Rock the 80s
MATTY-T @ Feb 15th 2008 10:55AM
This could be a good game. I had Quest for Fame on pc many years ago where you got to join Aerosmith on stage. at least there likely to be songs everyone knows rarther then the obscure crap they filled gh2 and 3 with.
Maybe if rockstar made a guitar hero game we would have plenty of the decent 70/80s rock ;)
russell @ Feb 15th 2008 10:56AM
they need to just make downloadable skins for many different bands.
andrew @ Feb 15th 2008 11:09AM
and the gap widens
davebo @ Feb 15th 2008 11:20AM
Well, aside from the fact that this would only appeal to Aerosmith fans, I'd love to see a game like this. Unfortunately it'd really only be worth the money if, in addition to guitar, you could also sing and play drums too. If only some company had the brains to do something that fun, by golly you'd have a pretty fun game on your hands. : )
Ron @ Feb 15th 2008 2:40PM
It should come with a scarf and a mike stand you could tie it onto.
Elsnerma @ Feb 15th 2008 7:39PM
Do not want. Obviously it'll appeal to Aerosmith fans, but to be honest, if it's 60 bucks, I don't think many of those fans will bite either. I like almost all of Weezer, but I wouldn't pay 60 bucks to play 30-40 of their songs. The great part about these types of games is that you get to play a wide variety of songs.
Hey, I'll take the free DLC at least.
Liarliar @ Feb 15th 2008 11:34AM
Not for me...now, if there was a Lynyrd or CCR version, i'd be in like flynn...

Just got a PS3 last night. Will I be able to download this from the PS store for free even though I don't own (and/or don't plan on playing) GH3?
Fane @ Feb 15th 2008 1:46PM
You should be able to do so; I downloaded the Boss Battles pack and We Three Kings without (yet?) having GHIII (any other free junk for other games I don't yet have, but may get in the future).
davebo @ Feb 15th 2008 3:33PM
You can download it, sure. But without GH3 and the guitar it comes with, you won't be able to actually play it.
wildmanpiet @ Feb 15th 2008 11:41PM
I downloaded GH3 we 3 kings before I owned GH3 and I had to re download it after I got the game. I might have fouled up though.
Fane @ Feb 15th 2008 1:47PM
*and (I can't believe I made a typo; maybe it's because I can't see the left side of the comments box)
wig2903 @ Feb 16th 2008 10:28AM
Do you get the Aerosmith content through the PSN store?
I've got the Boss Battle Pack and I can see the 'Message of the Day' on GH3 is about the free Aerosmith track, but I can't see it anywhere (O_o)
Mike @ Feb 16th 2008 9:43PM
The content is on the main page of the USA PSN store but it doesn't work with any other regions version of GH3. It might be put on the UK store at a later date but for now looks like its yanks exclusive only.
wig2903 @ Feb 17th 2008 3:14PM
Nice one, thanks for the info Mike ^^
