Fallout 3 interview reveals world size and voice actors
Quite a lot of tantalizing news concerning Fallout 3 was dropped by Peter Hines (Bethesda Softwork's VP of marketing) in a recent interview. He compared the new game to another Bethesda RPG epic, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and revealed that Fallout 3's world would be a smaller size at around 50-80% than that of Oblivion's. A smaller world for Fallout 3 is actually befitting in the sense that interesting locales in a sparsely populated post-apocalyptic wasteland would logically be more far-in-between than that of the bustling Imperial Cyrodiil in Oblivion.
Another revelation was in the voice acting department; when questioned about criticism on Oblivion's lack of voice acting, Hines replied that Fallout 3 would have "two or three times more" than that of Oblivion. Hines also declared that Ron Perlman, will reprise his narrator role as he did in the first two Fallouts. Liam Neeson has also been added to the roster doing the voice of the main character's father -- a character central to the plot of Fallout 3. There are quite a few more interesting bits in the interview, so you might want to have a read of it for yourself.

2-3x more voice actors than oblivion!? That brings it to a grand total of 6!!!

Hahaha...yeah I know, it's super annoying that Oblivion, as big and diverse as it is, has such limited voiceovers. You end up with beggars that have 3 phrases in 2 different voices. The funniest thing (the first time you hear it) is running up on vagrant women who confide in you in one tone then switch to a "spare some coins" crusty tone for the next reply. Seems really, really lazy. Each character class also has the same voice.
Here's to hoping Fallout uses some of that massive Blu-ray space and isn't crippled by DVD like Oblivion was.

Not exactly, there were eight voice actors for the common races and five actors which only provided their voices for a few selected NPCs.
So, it'll be at least ~30 people, and I hope they pick ones with a greater range of different voices...

as someone who as never played fallout before, what is the gameplay like? is it turn based? continuous action? is it 3p, 1p or something different?

Well, the original fallout games were 3/4 perspective overhead view, and the combat was completely turn based. Characters had "action points", and every action they performed (moving, shooting, using items) required a certain amount of AP, based (I think) on your agility stat. While not in combat, your character just moved around freely kind of like Diablo, but you could perform special actions like first aid, stealth, pickpocketing, etc. depending on what skills you focused on (you could do all of them, but you had a much higher risk of failure if you didn't focus raising the skills).
Fallout 3 will probably stay pretty faithful to the originals, except for the combat, which is supposed to be more strategic than morrowind/oblivion, but not turn based like the original fallouts. I personally can't wait for the game, but I'm a little disappointed that the world's not going to be as large as Oblivion, considering Oblivion's world didn't seem that vast to me. Morrowind's world seemed larger than Oblivion to me, making me wonder why Bethesda keeps taking steps down in the vastness of landmasses. I'm guessing that they're trying to keep the game size small enough to fit on a DVD so it will play on Xbox 360. Dumb Xbox holding back the progression of games because microsoft refuses to allow developers to require a HDD install :(

Is there a release date for that yet? I have never played any of the Fallouts but I wonder if I could just pick up the third one and not get too confused

Since it's on PS3 and PC I think what I'll do is -rent- first to see if it is anywhere -near- as calamitously buggy as Oblivion was before even considering a purchase. I like Fallout, but there is no way I'm going to buy one without heavy review after the mistake of purchasing "Brotherhood of Steel" on impulse. Guh.
