Lost Planet to include 5GB installation
Another imminent Capcom game, Lost Planet, looks set to include a necessary 5GB install before the game can begin. dBTechno is reporting that this takes about 15 minutes for Lost Planet and makes loading times "lightning fast". We refer you to our previous post on Devil May Cry 4's 20 minute install where we ask "who cares?", as the point still stands. A fifteen minute install is not worth getting wound up over, in the grand scheme of things.
It seems the required installation is going to become a recurring "feature" with regards to Capcom games. This could prove difficult for people with 20GB or 40GB PS3s, as 5GB is a fair chunk of their valuable HDD space. There are, however, plenty of ways to work around this what with upgradable internal HDDs and external memory. Problem solved.
[Thanks Clayton]

why not the LS2/LS7? @ Feb 18th 2008 1:30PM
Stop being suckers Capcom.
Let EA (Burnout), Naughty Dog (Uncharted) and Ubisoft (Assassin's Creed) show you the way.
buttsechz @ Feb 18th 2008 4:50PM
played the multiplayer and I enjoyed it. For 40 bucs I might even have bought it; i loved megaman - I owe it to capcom for MegaMan X2...
However some of us have 40 GB harddrives with divX movies on them, thus, some of us will not be buying the game.
thanks capcom - you are unreal. Like, unreal
ComicShaman @ Feb 18th 2008 1:30PM
I really wish Capcom would make these installs optional. It seems like it would silence a lot of complaints.
sean @ Feb 18th 2008 1:37PM
the installs dont bug me that much. just started playin DMC4 this morning .took only 15 minutes. but i do think they should be optional.
aMIGA_dUDE @ Feb 18th 2008 4:47PM
The game is c%$p anyway. It could be 50g I don't care as it not going anywhere near my PS3.
They are not getting any of my money, I rather play Call of Duty 4 or Warhawk.
nailerr @ Feb 18th 2008 1:42PM
The PROBLEM appears to be Capcom's poor development skills if this is the case. HDD upgrades will not fix this.
The number of good games with no install and minimal load times should shame them.
Popfrogs @ Feb 19th 2008 5:14AM
No shit, get them on the phone with the Uncharted team, maybe they can learn what the word "streaming" means.
Joe @ Feb 18th 2008 1:47PM
...aaaaand now I'm not buying this game.
Ishimaru @ Feb 18th 2008 1:52PM
The game was just ok on the 360 and the PC, definitely NOT worth getting again on the PS...
Also judging by the loading times of the PS3 version of DMC4 and the 360 version (as seen by the Gamespot game guide videos), the PS3's load times are definitely faster. Since I have a 160GB drive, I really could care less.
brettjr @ Feb 18th 2008 1:49PM
Actually there's a better way to deal with these 5 gig installs. DON'T BUY THE GAME! I understand wanting Dmc4 adn I wanted Lost Planet. I liked the type of game it was the theme and the cheap price but it's not worth 5 gigs, so I'm just not going to buy it.
This is so stupid, thanks capcom for making me think I betted on the wrong horse. I don't care thoguh, I just want my MGS and Final Fantasy.
Tim Parsons @ Feb 18th 2008 1:53PM
people who complain about things like this are whinners plain and simple . This is awesome that they do this to reduce loads times DMC4 load times are non-existant almost I don't even notice them. But for the whinny Babies who enjoy longer load times making it option would be nice at least then those of us who don't mind won't have to put up with these losers crying about it all the time so please Capcom for those of us who Thank you for the Reduced load time installs make it optionally in return so we don't have to listen to the babies whin about it
John @ Feb 18th 2008 3:52PM
whinny is something that a horse does. Two ends tends in English to make the 'i' short. So essentially you're saying these people are 'winners'. Point taken, though.
bulletfighter @ Feb 18th 2008 2:12PM
I dont mind when a good game asks for 5gig like final fantansy or mgs or even dmc4 but when a crappy game does it makes me mad.
jaybee @ Feb 18th 2008 2:13PM
Definitely an annoying trend. DMC4 I will suck it up for, but not Lost Planet. Capcom, get your shit together.
L @ Feb 18th 2008 4:18PM
Well can someone plz tell me why this is?
on the 360 load times are next to nothing :S on both games
Risz Evil 5 =?????? 40 mins?
cg @ Feb 18th 2008 2:05PM
The game is really awful anyway, no idea why anyone would buy it. It is complete trash. dont waste your money. This game is a disgrace to Capcoms good name.
Tranando @ Feb 18th 2008 2:05PM
I like the fact PS3 has standard HDD, and installing large amounts of files to make lightning quick loads, it's a great thing, however I have 2 points.
1. It NEEDS to be optional.
2. Is it really necessary? Ratchet and clank and Uncharted have NO load times, so why do the Capcom games??
I think it's lazy devs, and multi platform games.
ComicShaman @ Feb 18th 2008 2:48PM
I haven't played Uncharted (so nice to have a good game to look forward to), but Ratchet does have load times, at least when you go between worlds. At least I think that's what the hyperspace-tunnel graphic is for -- just a more elaborate Loading screen. Not that it's actually a problem in the game.
Phizzy @ Feb 18th 2008 3:29PM
Yeah, the SPACEWARP is a disguised load screen, the planets even have super low-res textures.
why not the LS2/LS7? @ Feb 18th 2008 8:43PM
I agree the spacewarp scenes are load screens. But they're not awful. They're no longer than load screens were in R&C 1,2 or 3. So the PS3 can do reasonable loads from disc. So making a mandatory install in order to shorten up loads like this makes no sense to me.
I'm not against optional installs, just mandatory ones.
myself @ Feb 18th 2008 2:09PM
not buying this game permanently solves the requesting disk space issue.
emaxximus @ Feb 18th 2008 2:21PM
I think they should change their name to Crapcom, because this game is a turd.
bozzers @ Feb 18th 2008 2:22PM
lightning fast loading times. i ve just had to wait 15 mins before i can even play the game.
Sam @ Feb 18th 2008 2:26PM
Another recurring feature making consoles more and more just like user friendly, dumbed down, proprietary drm'd up PC's.
I wonder when we'll get to the point of inflexion where consoles become more powerful than PC's but still have less features.
Interesting to think about, certainly seems like its going that way.
DrunkRaba @ Feb 18th 2008 2:31PM
after installing, the game data can be erased while still keeping your game save for the off-chance you want to revisit the game at some point. You would have to go through the install again, but you get that 5 gig back.
Trev @ Feb 18th 2008 2:35PM
Ugh. I was considering the game, but only for the budget price. The demo didn't impress me and I haven't heard that many great things about the single player campaign.
I'll tolerate a 5G install for Devil May Cry, because its the best action game on any system (eat it, Ninja Gaiden), but for Lost Planet I might just pass.
ComicShaman @ Feb 18th 2008 2:52PM
Agreed. And I expect I'll tolerate it again for Resident Evil 5 if they haven't gotten their act together by then. It's not going to significantly hurt established titles, but it can certainly put customers off purchasing some of the more obscure games.
Jay @ Feb 18th 2008 2:37PM
If I was Sony I'd be majorly pi$$ed......
Schoolimangooli @ Feb 18th 2008 2:42PM
Umm ok Thank god I knew, before I got the game becuase now I'm not going to buy it.
ash @ Feb 18th 2008 2:52PM
do i have to install the 5 gb or can i skip it
Mooseman721 @ Feb 18th 2008 3:04PM
Come on now, its not a big deal, it's 15 minutes. I would be more concerned with the size of the install than the loading. That said, if they release Res 5 with a 39gb install, i'll still buy it :)
The Clunge @ Feb 18th 2008 3:37PM
Like I needed more incentive to leave CAPCOM's crappy ports on the shelf. Between this and DMC4 I'd be 10GB poorer for storing demos, downloads, movies and music.
That said, if it was optional, I'm sure pretty much everyone would choose to install it anyway.
Eli @ Feb 18th 2008 3:26PM
5 gigabyte installations should be optional not required. I don't mind the 15-20 min. wait but 5GB of data is a chunk of my PS3's 40GB internal hard drive with music and videos. I shouldn't have to think about upgrading the hard drive to play a game. I just won't buy it. A game console is not a Window's PC.
Kodros @ Feb 18th 2008 3:32PM
I wonder why all the recent installs are 5gb. This, DMC4, and Hot Shots 5.
carl @ Feb 18th 2008 3:41PM
Lost Planet should be found at the bottom of a bargain bin because it is garbage anyway. Anyone who buys this piece of crap will regret it. It isnt worth 5meg of your HDD never mind a 5 gig install......Seriously this game SUCKS SO BAD!!!
Save your money for all the massive 2008 PS3 games we dont have to suffer trash like this!!!!
John @ Feb 18th 2008 4:00PM
Guess what. You didn't qualify your statements. All you told us was that it sucks, but you didn't say why. So your statement, your typing, is meaningless. Now we're all going to buy or download it, because you didn't qualify your statement. You have to say why: bad controls, crappy story, partial framerate, etc.
why not the LS2/LS7? @ Feb 19th 2008 2:25AM
He's right. It sucks.
Starts off as a meh third-person shooter. You trudge through some snowy planets, engaging in rather lame combat. After a while, it turns into an awful mech game. Not only a mech game (and I hate mech games), but a bad mech game (I hate bad games).
Oh, and the story is a snoozer too. Note that the graphics are decent, especially for a Capcom game.
Skip it.
Zeus the God @ Feb 18th 2008 3:41PM
this game was running on 3 legs no w u just went a shot the fucking thing the head capcom. way to win PS owners back. i bet these asses are only using 1 cpu
John @ Feb 18th 2008 4:24PM
I can only assume the install is not optional because the developers developed it only with this in mind. But what about people with 20gig ps3's? Who don't care about load times? It's a hostile user interface when a company forces something on someone, and this is no exception. Note all the negative responses to this. As another commentor pointed out, there are other titles that don't force this on the user. What a joke. What is Capcom, the new EA?
cmc @ Feb 18th 2008 4:29PM
Played the demo and it was awful, can't think of any other Capcom games that I'm going to want to play soon anyway so that gives them time to sort it out. Unless SF4 needs an install.....
eddie @ Feb 18th 2008 5:07PM
you think this is bad. just wait until you have to install the entire game on the hdd.
exolstice @ Feb 18th 2008 7:11PM
I'm not concerned about install times, I've owned PCs for two decades. The problem is with the amount of space required. If every game needed a 5Gb install, a lot of people would run out of disk space, and fast. It's a damn console, install sizes should be MINIMAL.
TBDave @ Feb 18th 2008 5:39PM
As I said in the DMC thread, I don't care about install times. Even if the install took 2-3 hours, if I wanted to play the game I'd be willing to wait it out. But this 5GB requirement is ridiculous. This will have a major impact on my decision to buy a particular game.
Personally, I have both consoles. And I don't prefer one over the other. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. So if I have a choice between buying a game on one console that has a 5GB requirement and one that doesn't, I'll go with the version that doesn't hog my hard drive. I'm sure Capcom doesn't care, because they get my money either way. But Sony should take notice.
Clif Watson @ Feb 18th 2008 9:33PM
Here is MY question...and one everyone should be asking...Where does this install get put? As far as I can tell, it becomes some invisible file right? I am pretty sure some of the other games I have had something that was installed on the first run, but not nearly as large as CAPCOM's! I don't know where these files are...what if I want to delete them, say after finishing the game or selling it??
parkd @ Feb 18th 2008 10:06PM
They're under the "Game" Column. Game Data Utility.
Clif Watson @ Feb 18th 2008 10:12PM
Under game Data Utility I only ever see save game files, nothing ever over a couple MBs.
jonathan @ Feb 19th 2008 5:14AM
Yo Exolstice my dude you couldnt have said that any better, my thoughts exactly.
You Idiots that are alright with this havent really seen as this could be an epidemic. The PS3 has just begun it's lifetime. These developers are asking 5 gigs of space for a device ranging from 20 to 80. If your an avid gamer you will be filling that up within a year. And what's going to have happen the next time you buy a game? ya ass gonna be buying an external HDD with it. Unless your alright with uninstalling one of your games, to install this game then uninstalling this game or another to put the other one you had in the 1st place. lol like seriously
and i dont know about the rest of you but to me it is not that serious for me to buy an external HDD to connect to a game console.
MattDark @ Feb 29th 2008 3:29AM
I think its the fact that its such a large install file and the fact tht Capcom force you to install these files onto your PS3 that bothers people.
I had an optional install with bladestorm, and thats one that does have some long loading times. But people have already mentioned many games that have little to no load times that dont need to do this install while capcom seem to eat up space on your HDD, when they already have plenty of free space on the blue-ray disc to deal with this.
(I seriously doubt they could add about 20GB of data to lost planets PS3 port)
drdre74 @ Feb 19th 2008 11:00AM
Just don't buy crappy Capcom games.
IanC @ Feb 19th 2008 10:48AM
Problem solved?
There should be no problem in the first place. Get your heads of Sony's cock and youd relize that.
