Spotted@GDC: the PSP GPS receiver
We know GPS is coming to PSP some time this year (in fact, we predicted it). So, when we see the peripheral being touted at GDC at Sony's booth on the show floor, our interest gets piqued. Considering the booth was underground, the device apparently had trouble figuring out a precise location. Oh well.
Let's hope for more news on an official release soon.

Freggin sweet.
a gps reciever that doesnt work.
Let me take a guess. it will only work with the psp-200/lite/slim; right?
how about a better battery. with all the new stuff poping up for the psp the only thing that suffers is the battery's life

Did you actually read what they said? The booth was UNDERGROUND. Of course it didn't work.
I can't wait for this thing...
And yeah, it'll probably only work with the Slim, since it has twice the RAM, and that's fairly important for these devices.

Hey, but Nate. Look at the picture. You see the speakers near the bottom? That GPS is running on the PSP-1000 (The older one, not the slim). On the Slim, the speakers are at the top. Not the bottom.
Yes, I know I'm observant, I can't help it. :D
So we know that GPS was running on the PSP-1000. I don't know if the final product will be for the PSP-1000 as well though.

Considering the Go!explore software works fine on the phat i'm sure the gps will work fine too.
How about just getting the damn stuff in the shops

guys do you even know about the GPS on the PSP? I have a CFW PSP, 3.52 m33-4 & i use MapThis! software in the UK. I have a GPS unit i bought from China and it works fine on my Phat PSP. I'm sure this one would work on the phat PSP, and if not, it doesn't really matter. And c'mon, battery life isn't that bad on the PSP anyway, sure, it could be better, but you can charge it in the car as you're playing & charge it at home, whats the problem?

i'm sick of waiting on these things, i'm starting to think sony just doesnt want my money.
naxe @ Feb 25th 2008 1:09PM
LOL. i was being sarcastic. i have been waiting for this since they launched it in japan. hell; since i saw metal gear potable ops had a gps function. i love the psp but cant help feel like this is a little gimmicky.other then travel and the ocasional (where the F#$% am I?) i dont see too many people using this.
i guess there was no use in supporting the psp at launch. i was one of the dumb ones that paid 250 for mine. back when noone knew what the hell to do with it.
i like how these companies think we are made out of money..APPLE mostly. a new ipod every six months. when you just bought one a week ago.
i think its time to upgrade. D:

Are we sure this will be a slim/lite only device? That pic above looks an awful lot like a PSP Fat... Besides, the original GPS came out for the Fat to begin with, why would it suddenly not work with it?
Duscrom @ Feb 25th 2008 2:09PM
It IS a PSP Phat... You can tel by the placement of the speaker-holes.
Alien @ Feb 25th 2008 1:18PM
The EU one works with the 1000 models to .. to bad that there are no east-european maps on it :(

The gps has taken forever to get to the U.S.
They better release it soon and it better have better reception than the initial Jap version had.

Yup, that's right. The Go Explore GPS software for PSP is now preloaded with UK and Ireland maps. I've seen the video of Go Explore in action here.
