If you're a long-time gamer from America, since we're not quite sure these made it overseas, you may have been to a giant arcade/restaurant called Dave and Busters. At these places, they usually had an area in the arcade that had "virtual reality" rings, where they slapped gloves and a big helmet on players willing to spend the big money so they could "virtually" move around in their own 3D world. It looked really ugly, too. Well, Sony has come up with a way for you to experience a 3D world without sticking anything on your body at all -- except recommending that you keep your head attached.
With the PlayStation Eye, Sony has unveiled the ability to map your head movements in 3D. For example, if you want to look around a corner in a first-person shooter, with this technology you would simply crane your neck around the corner like you really would. And the Eye would catch this and the game would react accordingly. It's neat. Watch the video. End of line.

Schoolimangooli @ Feb 28th 2008 5:38PM
OMG AMAZING!!!!!!
I will buy the EYE if they start coming out with games that you could use like a peak function or something creative that would be the best great article or find.
benny boy @ Feb 28th 2008 5:45PM
MTV who hosted the video have blocked it to non-American IPs.
A bit frustrating.
sam-evans @ Feb 28th 2008 10:06PM
The video works for New Zealand IPs, not just American
Lars @ Feb 29th 2008 3:06PM
You're not missing much. It's just showing a guy leaning left and right and the screen adjusting perspective.
I was really excited when I first saw this stuff about 5 years ago with the Eye Toy. But they frustratingly have never done anything with it (well, AntiGrav used it somewhat). Now it's like, great, they got the tech demo working on PS3 with the PS Eye... doesn't mean the consumer will ever see anything come of it.
nailerr @ Feb 28th 2008 5:38PM
They did this exact same thing with the Xbox Live Vision Cam before it was launched, the exact same demo. However Sony have a track record of actually making good on the camera software where I only use my XBLVC for Skype now. Shame there are no Eye windows drivers, it's a much better cam.
nailerr @ Feb 28th 2008 5:47PM
I nearly found the old video, needed Gesturetek as a keyword, this used to be the video demo but it appears to be gone now.

There's not??? That's odd, I had no trouble hooking up the EyeToy to my PC. I would have thought the PSEye would work too.
Luigi Soprano @ Feb 28th 2008 5:50PM
My god, imagine you're playing COD and you turn your neck to see an enemy coming at you, conspicuously, to melee you. Damn that would be awesome. Come on, Sony, make it happen!
tboy123 @ Feb 28th 2008 7:10PM
It looks awsome. But working in COD? I dont think so. I think if they make games with it, most (if not all) of them will be PSN Downloads. Because, the game programers would have to make their game able to work with it. Which probably would be very hard.

I don't get it... I thought this guy created this thing

He's smart, but it is nothing new.
Rooslin @ Feb 28th 2008 5:54PM

bigd7387 @ Feb 28th 2008 5:58PM
To the guys who run this: I don't want to just come out and call you slow but this news is really old.
Rooslin @ Feb 28th 2008 5:59PM
i can understand leaning one way to look around a corner but looking right and left wouldnt work considering the fact that u wont be looking at the screen at all causes kind of a problem ....enless your a fish >.>
Gareth Burleigh @ Feb 28th 2008 6:02PM
Beat me to it buddy
Gareth Burleigh @ Feb 28th 2008 6:01PM
Maybe Im a bit dense but if your turn your head to look around a corner you will be looking out the window and not at your TV. Unless of course Ive been turning my head wrong all these years
Schoolimangooli @ Feb 28th 2008 6:03PM
This video was posted yesterday...
Gareth Burleigh @ Feb 28th 2008 6:13PM
Thanks Schoolimangooli after wondering how it would work the other thing that was worrying me was when the video was posted
Hyams @ Feb 28th 2008 6:57PM
YOu don't turn your head. Think you your TV as a window, with the video game world behind it. When you lean left, you can see further right (and less left) into the game world. It's all about leaning, nothing with turning.
If you have one eye closed to eliminate depth perception, an optical illusion will take place: it will appear as though the game is projecting and receding from the your tv: to you, the game will appear to be in 3D, rather than a flat screen.

Eye Patch FTW ;-)
wocyob @ Feb 28th 2008 6:04PM
aw man thats awesome...i saw some other dude do it with the wii and then some dude did it with the eye with infared goggles and some exposed film...now sony is doing it for it..thats awesome!!!!
SQUIRTFORCE @ Feb 28th 2008 6:04PM
Yawn. Wake me up when they have weinercam.
roach @ Feb 28th 2008 6:44PM
Simpsons did it....
Haiddasalami @ Feb 28th 2008 8:51PM
YAY for video not available!
PSPDog @ Feb 28th 2008 9:42PM
Sony could actually out do Wii fit with this thing. Have the Eye track your body while some chick made of more polygons than anything the Wii can produce counts your jumping jacks for you. She could yell at you when you stop, etc.
I look forward to more cool stuff from Sony.
matthew_neitzer @ Feb 28th 2008 11:00PM
The camera man really sucks. It is like he doesn't get the concept. Oh well, I guess we all know what it would look like...
Iain @ Feb 28th 2008 11:13PM
Glad someone is moving with Johnny Lee's idea! Go Sony!

Everyone keeps bringing up FPS as the logic choice for this technology. I would agree of it's potential in that genre, but come on. No one bringing up the other ones desperate for this? GT and Ace Combat style games anyone?
Imagine in the car view inside the ability to look at your side mirrors for competitors trying to pass, You can react faster to cut them off! Or if your curious about how fast your driving and all you need to do is look down, that would eliminate the need for the forcing of the display to eat up the screen unless you so desire to see it.
In the skies, your abilities to view a much larger cone of field will help you track those slippery devils that love to fly all about like flies. Or if they ever get a twin seating helicopter in a multiplayer and you in the gunner's seat. It'll give you better tracking of the little scum on the ground trying to blow you out of the sky!
And those are but Two examples of the use of that setup, try to imagine what truly might come from this?!
SKI @ Feb 29th 2008 8:14AM
I'm pretty sure that this is only 2D head tracking and that the cam loses you if you move closer or further away from the TV
Christian @ Feb 29th 2008 10:17AM
There is a box around the guy's head in the video. That would imply that it would work in 3d, since as you got closer to the TV, the box around your head would get larger.
