It seems that the move the industry has taken to use Blu-ray as the new high-definition format is finally picking up steam. Numerous reports are floating to the shore of Bloglandia in neat little bottles that speak of Blu-ray drives getting placed in Apple and Dell laptops starting later this year. The issue is battery life -- apparently watching a Blu-ray movie on laptops absolutely drains the battery. Assuming it's not plugged in. We feel like we've heard these rumors a long time ago, but they died off inexplicably. Perhaps Blu-ray being declared the "winner" turned old rumors into truth?

What makes it that much different then watching a DVD?
Panathas17 @ Mar 4th 2008 11:58AM
I'm sorry but were you active at all in the format war???
anne@dell @ Mar 4th 2008 3:38PM
I’m a little confused by this post. Dell has been offering Blu-ray disc as an option on a variety of notebooks for more than a year. The XPS M1710 (image above) added Blu-Ray support in Dec. 2006:
http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/corp/pressoffice/en/2006/2006_12_11_rr_000?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
and it’s now available across multiple consumer systems like the XPS M1530 and XPS M1730 and Inspiron 1720 and 1420 notebooks and the XPS 720 and XPS 420 desktops.
parkd @ Mar 4th 2008 4:47PM
power usage wise, i meant. I have watched blu-rays on my ps3 so i know the difference. and fiddlesworth has already answered my ?.
Andy @ Mar 3rd 2008 10:37PM
Dell has the ugliest laptops out there, I mean they are hideous. My first lappy is going to be either a VAIO or a Macbook. Yes they are more expensive, but at least they aren't embarrassing. There also a little less common, which is much cooler.
Dahk @ Mar 4th 2008 12:10AM
Actually check out Asus's dood. They have like the greatest mid to high end laptops =) They're SO flippin' nice. Unfortunately, you gotta get scrounge around for it cuz its not regularly sold in Best Buys and FSs. Asian laptop places have them for pretty cheap lol.
But yeah, actually Dell's new XPS line up has completely changed, and their new ones actually look amazing lol.
But I still must agree, Macbooks are next on the list for me lol.
Jevanzz @ Mar 4th 2008 10:34AM
I have a Dell XPS M1330, and it's the smexshiest laptop I ever seen :)
Fiddlesworth @ Mar 3rd 2008 10:47PM
Decoding high definition Blu-ray video and audio is a lot more processor intensive than decoding standard def DVD.
Syn @ Mar 3rd 2008 11:20PM
This doesn't belong here. Just because the PS3 has a Blu-Ray player, doesn't mean you have to post every story related. This has nothing to do with the PS3. What is your problem...
nooooooooooooob @ Mar 3rd 2008 11:34PM
dude.... this isnt just ps3 fanboy...this is basically Sony Fanboy....Blu-Ray is sony. Hence this Does belong here.
What is wrong with you?
Kyle @ Mar 3rd 2008 11:40PM
I have to agree with Syn on this one, I don't believe this post belongs here, regardless of the PS3 having Blu-ray. It's one thing to have a post dealing with Blu-ray movies, because that applies to what I use the PS3 for (though I don't come here for my Blu-ray release updates) I come her for the coverage on games, which is why I agree with Syn.
I believe this blog has to draw a line somewhere, and every little mentioning of Blu-ray need not apply. It seems lately that people are beating the format war like a dead horse. We get it, it's behind us, now let's talk games.
John @ Mar 4th 2008 4:01AM
This post belongs here, and is relevent information. If you have a limited brain capacity and can only hold so much information (which I'm pretty sure is the case), then simply don't read. You can always watch Fox news from a cave and chew on a bone...
Syn @ Mar 4th 2008 4:16AM
@John
Yes because a Blu-Ray player draining an Apple and Dell laptop is related to PS3/Sony...
But instead of providing any information in regards to the fact that it IS irrelevant, you try and prove your self worth in this subject with a unneed attempt at an insult.
Two thumbs up!
XDragon @ Mar 4th 2008 6:56AM
I agree with John.
If this doesn't belong, why did you take the time to read it and to post?
PS3 is also a Blu-Ray player which makes all Blu-Ray news belong here.
I don't read every piece of info on PS3 Fanboy; I read the ones that I'm interested in.
If you're not interested, move on to the next article.
Syn @ Mar 4th 2008 7:08AM
@XDragon
Then, you aswell fail to see the point.
If I goto a forum about 'Cars', why would I want information about 'Bikes' flooding the forums?
So. if Britney Spears buys a Blu-Ray player, should that also be posted here, because its related?
PS3Fanboy, aka Information pertaining to the PS3 and/or Sony. A Blu-Ray player inside another system/machine, is NOT in anyway related to PS3 or Sony.
Lars @ Mar 4th 2008 5:33PM
I'm with Syn, although John had a great retort! Love the imagery especially.
We really don't need you guys reporting on everything Sony. I don't care about laptop specs unless I'm in the market, and I don't want to see the latest Sony PMP, etc.
But it is good that BD is getting more heavily adopted. Don't care about the movie watching aspect though. It's all about games and storage for me. I'm hoping the burnable discs come down in price because 2 years ago they were like 20 bucks per burnable BD, at least!
kitt2112 @ Mar 3rd 2008 11:26PM
OOOOHH YAAA! finnaly i have been saving up for a mac with blu-ray in it for years now. now all i need them to do is make it slim and gun metal black.
Neil @ Mar 3rd 2008 11:33PM
Dell has had Blu-ray drives in their high end notebooks for quite some time now. (as an option)
Haiddasalami @ Mar 3rd 2008 11:44PM
My soon to be built PC will blow anything that Dell has comparable to it. The only product I would trust from dell is the XPS but that is way too costly...Also isnt a bluray drive around 500$ canadian? Whoever is paying for that can I have some money.
ill trooper @ Mar 4th 2008 10:52AM
Building your own laptop, interesting.
Haiddasalami @ Mar 4th 2008 10:59AM
No building a new quad core pc.
Rick @ Mar 3rd 2008 11:55PM
I got a blu-ray drive in my laptop from dell in november for $150 the burner was $300, didn't get the burner because its still too slow.
I'll wait for a faster one and for the price to drop
JAH75157 @ Mar 4th 2008 12:27AM
did i accidently navigate to blu-rayfanboy.com?
Dahk @ Mar 4th 2008 1:00AM
Nope. You're at the URL:
http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/blu-ray-makin-its-way-into-apple-and-dell-laptops/#commentform
Kspraydad @ Mar 4th 2008 2:27AM
PS3 has a Blu-ray drive.
Adoption of Blu-ray as a media and storage medium will mean many more potential PS3 purchasers.
More PS3 purchasers means higher likelihood of PS3 developer support.
Get over it..the PS3 is a multimedia machine not just a gaming machine and anything that helps push its format forward is important to the health of the PS3 in the long run.
:::
Isn't surprising to hear about Apple...they've been expected to do this for awhile. And yes, Dell already has this as an option: http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1730wow?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19
Magma @ Mar 4th 2008 2:56AM
I like the blu ray news, Keep it coming I say. It's not hurting anyone who doesn't want to read it.
JaseH @ Mar 4th 2008 7:20AM
I agree. People say it isn't relavant... Who cares?... it sure does appeal to most people with a PS3... as it does for me!
So if you guys want to whine whine whine, take it somewhere else, or simply move along. If there's good signs for the Blu ray company who created the drive in my PS3... then I'm all for them succeeding as it also helps the sales & interest of my console.
MOVE ON!... it doesnt hurt anybody. Tell me, is your hissy fit relavant here?... does this look like WhineFanboy.com?
No.

If all the thing you've said are true, then the news should be about how many PS3 will be sold coz of DELL and APPLE using BLU-RAY on their laptops...
Seriously im a huge PS3 fanboy.. but this is starting to become a SONY (not PS3) site.
Anyways love this blog, just some tips to make it better.
twak @ Mar 4th 2008 8:30AM
Ummm... Dell has been putting Blu-Ray drives in their systems for almost over a year now
Mike @ Mar 4th 2008 8:49AM
The "next big thing" will be dedicated low-power next gen video decoder chips, be it independent or built in to the GPU. Current general-purpose CPU/GPU combos use too much juice decoding high-bitrate audio and video content.
Marioman @ Mar 4th 2008 9:41AM
Blu Rays offer much better sound and video quality - glad to see they are being put into more applications.
Check out the Amazon store - they've had a sale since Blu Ray is now contested the winner...

Hell yeah I've been waiting for this!! hopefully the prices are reasonable...
Wow a lot of haters in here wearin red shades and drinkin red kool-aid.
Keep up the good work ps3fanboy, I appreciate all your gaming and BLU RAY news!!
Varone @ Mar 4th 2008 4:44PM
@PS3Fanboy.
Everybody who reads this knows Blu-Ray won the format war.
I have purchased my PS3 and although I was releived to see Blu-Ray win, I don't need reassuring that I made the right decision every day. You yourselves love the PS3 and know how good it is, so why the constant reminders that "its relevant again" and "blu-ray is the future"?
Plus, most people who read this already have a blu ray player in their Playstation, so why would they need another one in an overpriced laptop?
David @ Mar 5th 2008 12:01AM
I have a blu-ray drive in my xps. I can confirm that IT CANNOT PLAY BLU-RAY DISCS WHILE RUNNING ON ITS BATTERY ALONE. Although it works great with DVD's. It has a feature called dell media direct which can use the laptop as a portable DVD player. It basically turns the laptop on but doesnt use anything but the media player. It doesnt even use the OS, so it uses very little battery power.
aditya @ Mar 5th 2008 11:35PM
for those of u plannin gto get a a ps3 this is great news cause it means that the production of bluray drives is increasing so blu ray drivers a re steadily going to get cheaper and this will eventually force a ps3 price reduction or added specs like bigger hdd or somthing or wireless N networking
Ty @ Mar 6th 2008 6:56PM
God damnit... I hate Apple and Dell isn't a company I trust. I trusted Toshiba and although their HD-DVD standard wasn't a big deal, it still remains as a choice THEY made. Toshiba would be all for blu-ray right now cause they weren't really pushing their standard as much as Sony was pushing their format.
Let's see how long it takes Toshiba to pick up Blu-Ray. Sweet laptops from a good company WITH Blu-Ray (burning capabilities)? Sign me up. Screw Apple and Toshiba.
Ty @ Mar 6th 2008 6:57PM
I meant screw Dell on that last line...
