Rumor: Crysis for PS3 looking probable; 'will be an almost 50% new game'
An interesting little news piece in the latest issue of UK magazine PSW gives the indication that, not only is Crysis definitely heading to the PS3, but the extra content will make the PC version look like a demo. The magazine states that "it's no secret that Crysis is coming to PS3 this year. The excitable, hard-worked coders over at Crytek have said as much in many interviews - they've even produced a new, multi-platform engine in readiness - but the real juice here is that it won't be a straight conversion of the PC game. We understand PS3 Crysis will be an almost 50% new game, with many of the original games staff taken off PC Crysis months before release to begin to work on Crysis 2 and a port to PS3 that will include aspects of the sequel - but a new structure, environments, weapons and enemies will feature on PS3. This should be one of the year's biggest console shooters."Sounds good to us! We'd love to see an expanded version of the game heading to PS3. With such high system requirements, it's the only way we'll be able to play the game with its intended graphics. "Almost a 50% new game," though? That sounds a little fishy. We're firmly labeling this one as the rumor it is. Fingers crossed, though!

Sounds too good to be true I think...
Ranus Studios @ Mar 3rd 2008 1:20PM
Another way of looking at that 50% thing is that they had to make changes to get it to run on the PS3, but the more I think about that, the more it seems like a stretch.
iamrobk @ Mar 3rd 2008 1:26PM
I would almost hope they change the game code 50%. Let's be honest with ourselves, the game doesn't run that great on the PC. However if they can unload a lot of the physics and a few other things to the Cell, the RSX would probably be able to run this at a solid 30fps at 720p, maybe a bit higher.
Christian @ Mar 3rd 2008 1:34PM
Well could be their code is already using parallel programming and thus the PS3 cell is a natural target for it. Considering the high specs they aimed for with the PC version I wouldn't be surprised if the coded the game to take advantage of multicore CPU's and maybe even had the Cell architecture in the back of their mind for where to go in the future.

It'll take hard work - building the game from scratch will take time but so will compiling the game from it's x86 architecture to run on PPC architecture consoles use (a problem with older macs).
Still, if EA break their track record for ports riddled with slowdown, we have a winner on our hands. PS3, with jiggling, can match what most top-end gaming PC's can do - but more emphasis on the processor is needed rather than the aging graphics card (based on 7800GTX - showing it's age now).
TheSh0wstopper @ Mar 3rd 2008 1:44PM
Funny thing is I just ordered a GeForce 8800GT from Newegg. This may be a stupid question but would the PS3 version even compare remotely to the PC version running on a 8800GT and 2gb of ram?

.... And a core 2 duo processor running at 2.66?

Depends greatly on how well people are able to do efficient parallel programming on the Cell. I went to an IBM talk about the Cell some time ago where the guy from IBM said he thought it should be possible to get almost full 3Ghz processing out of the 7 SPU cores as the parallel programming skills and techniques improve (even in the best PS3 games today the SPU's are used at much less efficiency). With that kind of power the PS3 should be able to match the current generation of PC and GPU nicely. But of course utilizing the Cell so extremely is still a unproven idea so we will just have to wait and see. My hope though is that PS3 exclusives like Haze, Socom and Killzone 2 will start giving us an idea about what is possible to achieve in the field of FPS on the PS3. But realistically I think we are still a few years away from someone managing to really use the Cell for all its worth.

On XP it'll run like a dream...Vista, not so much.
I thought my brand new computer sucked, then went back to XP, found it wasn't the hardware that was the problem...
Dan @ Mar 3rd 2008 1:51PM
Thats it..if the PS3 can run it like its supposed to then im all in. We need to have some more real shoot'em up titles, COD4 cant hold it on its own.

Is the game going to be fun and interesting this time around, I played it on the PC and was just left thinking of what could have been. The nano suit came off as just a gimmick or game mechanic, to me it really should not have been the main theme of the game.
Xoonaka @ Mar 3rd 2008 1:59PM
This wasn't an April issue, was it?
Jakob @ Mar 3rd 2008 3:04PM
I thought that too, maybe just an April Fool?
benny boy @ Mar 3rd 2008 3:53PM
Good point. I hadn't thought about it.
It would be a good April Fool's Joke and seeing as the magazine is based in the UK there is a good chance that that's what this is.
Who knows... maybe we'll find out sooner or later.
xXcrisisXx @ Mar 3rd 2008 3:02PM
lol, its prolly the same euro mag that was saying they had irrefutible proof that goldeneye was 360 bound. i doubt this news is any truer.
Rowdehaj @ Mar 3rd 2008 6:15PM
Because there is only one gaming magazine in all of Europe, and all of the continent's inhabitants are blatant liars.
Eggy @ Mar 3rd 2008 4:28PM
Crysis for PS3 is not so strange, they were looking for PS3 developers a while ago. But it will never look and run like the PC version on a high end machine. Impossible.
Popfrogs @ Mar 3rd 2008 5:15PM
Wow, seriously? You mean over 3 grand worth of bleeding edge hardware can render a game with more detail than a ~$400 console? I gotta make a phone call.
Eggy @ Mar 3rd 2008 7:20PM
A 1000 dollar PC will run it better as well (not including monitor and keyboard+mouse). There is only so much one can do with 512 mb shared memory.
John @ Mar 4th 2008 4:30AM
Actually, Eggy, there's no way a $1000 PC could run Drake's Fortune or Ratchet and Clank Future without serious frame drops-- A PC like that doesn't have the graphics power or the parallel processing power. Nice try though. Better spring for the $3k machine.
jtedesco33 @ Mar 3rd 2008 4:44PM
Crysis relied solely on graphics, the gameplay was your standard shooter type. IMO they should have just stuck with Far Cry instead of making this game. Either way everyone has known for sometime now that the 360 and PS3 would be seeing this game at some point, poor PC sales have garaunteed that.
Eggy @ Mar 3rd 2008 4:50PM
Yeah turning a shooter into something it's not would be a dumb idea. Crysis is one of the least linear shooters that was released last year. I like the fact you can take different approaches to complete objectives. It adds replay value.
Tranando @ Mar 3rd 2008 5:47PM
Doh, looks like the 360 can't handle Crysis...
The latest copy of Game Informer says that the 360 version of Crysis is canned and that it will only be able to run on the PS3. Check it out it is on page 26 in the March issue.
Kabapu @ Mar 4th 2008 2:44AM
I'll believes it when I sees it.
Darkdrium777 @ Mar 3rd 2008 7:29PM
Crysis was made to run on a super high end PC from the future
(I have a Q6600, 8800 GTS 640 and 2GB of RAM and I can't max this thing). Maybe the PS3 can be that PC of the future... Let's hope so, because if it runs worse than on my PC, or in lower details (Like Normal, which doesn't really look Next Gen IMHO), I won't even consider it, and I'm sure many will agree...
It's really too bad that this game wasn't made to run on any PC. :/ I liked the demo...

people, this news is a far cry (pun intended) at best. first of all, work on porting the engine to the ps3 didnt even begin until after crysis shipped, that being said explain how half the development team was pulled months before the games release to work on ps3 centric development?
second, they devs JUST SAID AT GDC that they are still talking about a console version, and havent done anything on it. its piss easy to find, just go to www.incrysis.com . now far be it from me to believe a site called ps3 fanboy, but honesly im going to believe what comes straight from the horses mouth before im going to believe a console specific publication that is (if you do your reasearch) clearly pulling misinformation straight out of their ass.
now that being said, i fully expect a console version to appear at some point, after all, this is ea were talking about here.
and one last thing, the engine runs at between medium-high compared to the pc version, so its not going to be maxed out. again, straight from the horses mouth.
