Rumored PSN Store redesign to include video downloads?
Always ready to throw the latest rumor onto the internet, Kotaku has more "details" on that rumored PSN Store redesign that we would so much love to see. They even have a mock-up of the store (as seen above) according what their source saw at the Destination PlayStation retailer even last week. If true, the PSN Store will follow the aesthetic of the SingStar SingStore even closer than we imagined - fine by us! We love the SingStore. It's very easy to navigate and it looks a darn site better than the PSN Store does right now.
According to Kotaku, the redesigned Store will be accompanied by Sony's long-awaited video download service. Naturally, this will be for America only to begin with. Of course, nothing is confirmed and no real details (such as price, or a release date) are available and Sony is, as always, staying very tight lipped. We'll let you know if anything develops, as usual.

Sony owns a lot of big name studios. So we could have quite a library if they so choose too.
gordon_strange @ Mar 4th 2008 8:16AM
Please dont flame me if this is a daft question, but would the movies be in HD or SD?
If its the former then I think I'll have to upgrade my 60gb hardrive to a 1 TB!
LJ @ Mar 4th 2008 8:22AM
Don't have an answer to your quesiton, but you are probably right.
Anyways... a PSN redesing and more content is much needed! They should've done it sooner! Can't wait!
NaCHOburger @ Mar 4th 2008 8:24AM
I would think it would be your choice if it is available (HD or SD) and if you television can play HD.
Dahk @ Mar 4th 2008 8:46AM
I'm pretty sure they'd be offering both services. They're already offering HD trailers for games and movies and whatnot, so I don't see why they would not continue to do so.
And of course, its not like they'd let SD content go to waste either with the millions of people who have yet to go HD.
But yeah, if you plan grabbing loads of videos and movies in HD, you might need that 1TB lol.
Saffie @ Mar 4th 2008 10:37AM
But i thought there are no 1TB hdd compatible for PS3.
matthew_neitzer @ Mar 4th 2008 2:18PM
It would have to be an external hard drive
matthew_neitzer @ Mar 4th 2008 2:22PM
Or they may make 2.5 hard drives that big, what do I know?
jtedesco33 @ Mar 4th 2008 8:49AM
If Sony stays true to form and continues to copy everything the 360 does, then yes you will have a choice in SD or HD. With HD costing a bit more to DL.
Rowdehaj @ Mar 4th 2008 9:03AM
That wouldn't just be copying the 360 mindlessly, it would just be the most sensible thing to do.
Microsoft didn't patent common sense, and it certainly didn't invent it.

I'm curious to see if this is intigrated more into the xmb system. I would personaly like that better. Right now the store just seems like a bad webpage. It would be cool to have it even a small standalone program with slick animation and sounds like our current xmb system. Imagine if the store was just a giant xmb catolog online!
Galley @ Mar 4th 2008 9:11AM
That's exactly what I was thinking. XMB on the let side, and a preview of the product on the right.
mnemo @ Mar 4th 2008 9:09AM
Well, it's ABOUT TIME that they redesign that ugly online store. Can't wait!
Ztroot @ Mar 4th 2008 9:12AM
Anyone else remember this from CES ?
"One of the first examples of this strategy will be an expansion of the PlayStation Network. The network now is mostly used by gamers. Sony wants to turn it into a platform to deliver video, too. Sony will hold a press conference in two months to discuss changes to the PlayStation 3."

Since CES was at the beginning of January I guess the press conference will be very soon?
Jakob @ Mar 4th 2008 10:18AM
I hope Europans can rent movies too, maybe just make an American PSN account and buy some wallets? Like iTunes.
Riley Freeman @ Mar 4th 2008 10:59AM
do they even make 1tb 2.5 drives? second wouldnt hd video downloads take up hugggggeee amounts of space? tv shows probably wouldnt but movies i dont see the point in HD i just paid about 200$ for a 250gb hard drive for the ps3. thats a lot of cake ESPECIALLY since i bought the ps3 when it first came out so video downloads great but ughh online storage or something where u can put these things on would also be nice
Haiddasalami @ Mar 4th 2008 11:01AM
yes but probably once you buy you dont have to pay again if you delete it...
gordon_strange @ Mar 4th 2008 11:05AM
yeah they do, but they are not cheap something like £160, however that pretty much sorts my capacity worries out.....well until Sony start doing downloadable hologram movies ;)
chris.westermann @ Mar 4th 2008 11:14AM
Sorry, but until us North American's can get PlayTV I hope EU doesn't get video download services. Its just petty jealousy, I know, but why should one region get it all.
Also, you guys do know that the PS3 supports external drives, and every video I have ever downloaded from PSN gave me the option to save to the internal HDD or an external drive if connected.
sibbor @ Mar 4th 2008 11:41AM
You pity american, please go hide under a rock or self-destruct! I do, in fact deeply, dislike you for being damn heavenly stupid for saying stuff like this: "until us North American's can get PlayTV I hope EU doesn't get video download services". Argghhh..!! You have to understand that the US infrastructure is _bad_ compared to most of the countires in EU. PlayTV just simply won't work in most part of the US, and it's not something Sony came up with. Learn the facts!
"why should one region get it all."
Because EU > US ;)?
Jakob @ Mar 4th 2008 12:15PM
You're silly, I would be happy if America gets PlayTV (in a different version of course)
But the fact is US get all the stuff first; games, demos, colors, availability etc.
And the population is much larger in Europe than US; 700mio compared to 300mio.
While you're waiting on PlayTV, I would LOVE to post a very nice picture: http://www.eurogamer.net/article_gallery.php?article_id=93867&image=assets/articles//a/9/3/8/6/7/MainMenu_Library.jpg.jpg&position=4
James @ Mar 4th 2008 11:29AM
/me runs out to price a bigger HDD
TinyTim121 @ Mar 4th 2008 12:05PM
I think the movie downlaods idea is great! And while i do own a 250gb HDD, i would probably run out of space v. soon! lol
John.B @ Mar 4th 2008 12:17PM
Can't wait for this to come out, and it would be amazing if it looked like the Singstore, but did you guys realize that's not an official mock up? Michael McWhertor from Kotaku made that...
Kalil @ Mar 4th 2008 12:42PM
cant wait
SolidSnake @ Mar 4th 2008 1:52PM
whoa, a fellow american got told by a euro, and no one stood up to defend? EU cannot be greater than the US; being attached to France pretty much shuts up any of your arguments ... lol.. i kid, we all know how good France is at everything! lol.. but seriously, news keeps getting better everyday for the PS3 .. my internet is fast, but to download HD movies seem like it would still take some time. Ive never tried, so I may be wrong.. but it still would be kick ass
btrowbri @ Mar 4th 2008 2:51PM
I am just curious as to where you guys bought your HDD's. I have looked at some of the big retailers and they dont seem to have it on their sites. Is new egg the way to go then? I heard their prices ara a little expensive, I dont know though.
whoelse @ Mar 4th 2008 6:06PM
Well, i wouldnt expect HD films because arent they trying to promote Blu-ray instead.
I think they should have something on the XMB like the info bar but better which shows whats on the store, in a animated graphical way. Like a window on the top right corner of the screen.
NACHO @ Mar 4th 2008 6:46PM
I am also looking for a new Hard Drive. Is 250 GB the max? Recommendations? Can i move data from one hard drive to another easily?
Whubbsie @ Mar 4th 2008 7:46PM
Well if they make this available in Australia i can serious say PS3 is the greatest machine on the planet... been waiting for XBL content like this forever would be so sweet if Sony beat them to the punch in Australia.
Jona @ Mar 5th 2008 4:16AM
I'd like to be able to buy a movie - have a low res version download/stream instantly and have the blueray version in the mail.
