SOCOM Confrontation screenshots show old, new maps

The new SOCOM game is gracing the cover of EGM this May, so in some sort of celebration, two new screenshots have been posted. They look very, very good. Especially when you compare them to the original screens released a while back. However, SealTeam-6, the team working on the game, say there is no new information to share at this time.

There are some quick comments on the PlayStation Blog about the new screenshots. You can read them for yourself, or listen to our summary of their comments. One is of "Crossroads", the most requested map by fans. The second is a brand new map that has a 16-player smaller arena space, but can expand itself to fit 32 players. Also, you can choose to use the classic SOCOM camera option. If you guys were worried.

It looks great -- and I loved Socom -- but right now, I'd just prefer to get the new patch for "Call of Duty 4"! Let's go, Sony -- get it out of certification!

How could a new patch have problems? We won't know until we get it. I personally don't see much that needs patching in COD4 but we're way overdue for maps.

this really doesn't look that great graphics-wise. although i suppose final polishing will clean up some stuff. just doesn't look as nice as some shooters that have come out recently.

I agree. This seems to be the worst looking Sony first party title. True, graphics aren't everything, but as PS3 fans, I think we should all admit that we do care about how a game looks graphically.

Why the hell do you have COD4 on the PS3?

I have it on both. I bought it for 360 first but I decided to buy it for my 2 sons on PS3 so they could stop bugging me. I'm not a fanboy, I'm a fan of GAMES!!! So would ya kindly STFU ;)

Socom 1 and 2 is the most fun I've ever had online.
Nothing since has given me the same buzz.

I think the exceptional online set up and regional lobbies played a big part.

Well said, S1 and S2 (not S3, that sucked) really defined the lobbying system for me. Nowt really ever came close after Socom; ahh the memories of late night clan matches whilst ratted out of my skull - happy days!
However, I can't help but expect this release to be a huge dissapointment. Something tells me the length of delay and the lack of info are not good signs. And besides, COD4 rules anyway

SOCOM has always been about the thrill of playing online. I think I'm glad that they aren't including a campaign. This means they can focus on making this one hell of an online only game. As for the graphics, they look a lot better than the first screens. I was kind of worried there for a second some of the textures were plain and the character models kind of looked like PS2's Black. All in all I can't comprehend how many quality first party titles we will be spoiled with this year. Maybe the PS3 will finally get the respect it deserves.

This is sort of a DLC game like Warhawk as opposed to a full release. It is not even made by Zipper, who were apparently supposed to be making the next proper SOCOM title.

My question is, regardless of its quality, surely going off on a tangent is risking harming the reputation of what has always been a solid franchise. Maybe they need to be careful to make a greater distinction. I know they did a pretty good job with the PSP game but this seems more like a SOCOM lite game.
