Official EU PS3 forums linking up with the PSN later this month
The official European PlayStation forums will be undergoing a big change this month. After three days of downtime, starting from March 17th, logging in to the forum will only be possible with a PlayStation Network ID. People who already have a username on the forums will need to link their PSN ID before March 17th or risk starting over with a new account. The forum will also be updated with various unannounced new features. We hope that these new features are worth the hassle - it seems people aren't very impressed with losing their usernames (which will change to your PSN ID after the switchover). One of the questions on the FAQ hints at future PSN functionality within the forums, but it won't be this month.

I wonder if the US forums will do this anytime soon if at all
True_Darknight @ Mar 11th 2008 5:23PM
hehehe That means less Xbots!!!
hahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Unless ofc they sign up for the PS store just to talk on forums and annoy us!!ROTFL
I think this is just too funny.
Maybe they can start sending messages to other users on website and get it on PS3? and the sorts.. haha

Can someone speculate on why they are doing this? What benefits and drawbacks could it have? Linking a pc-based forum to people's PSN logins seems strange to me...unless they want users to have more, real accountability. Or they want to help clean up trolls.

maybe its for once home comes out and it can show you all your trophies and accomplishments if they are real.

I think it's a good idea. It makes the playstation online experience more unified. I don't know how Live does it, but anything to integrate the disparate parts of the network together is a good thing. Maybe it's part of eventual home integration, so you can click on a person's forum name and get their list of accomplishments? Or send them text messages? I don't know, but integration is a good thing.
And I dont' get the PSN username thing... if you didn't like the PSN username you chose, why did you choose it?

i'm glad they are finally pulling every thing together! now things like the leader boards can but on sites like MLG one day!
keep it Sony..you're gaining ground every day! bring on the NetFlix downloads and, things could look that much better!

Hmm... So if you ever talked about doing things with your PSP that Sony may not approve of, now they will know your PSN. Looks like it's time to make a new account on the playstation forums.

Sounds like a great idea to me, solidifying the idea of "Community" that a PSN ID brings etc, plus weeding out trolls who likely have never owned a PS3.
After all, there are thousands of other forums on the interwebs where they can continue to do that.

I think it's cool. I hope the US get's it but maybe with a few minor differences. I wish members WOULD have to have a PS3 in order to create accounts and said accounts would have to originate from the PS3 otherwise you're still gonna have the trolling by owners of the other consoles. I also wish there would be the option of having a different password than the one used on your PS3. reason being if the forum were ever hacked or your information somehow became public it would be easy for someone to create an account on their PS3 using your info and make unauthorized purchases or other illegal/immoral transactions/posts.
