Another conference call game leak: Mortal Kombat
It's the "in thing" nowadays, seemingly, for companies to leak their upcoming projects during conference calls to investors. Bioshock 2 and Red Faction 3 were both "announced" in this way and now a next-gen Mortal Kombat joins the ever growing list. Midway boss David Zucker spilled the beans during a recent conference call when he talked about "games like This Is Vegas and, of course, you got Mortal Kombat game this year and others that we think have potential to give us higher unit numbers."
There are no other details around the game but MCV is expecting it to hit the PS3 and 360. If it really is due out this year, as Zucker says, then no doubt we'll be hearing a lot more about it in the near future. Until then, rest safe in the knowledge that it definitely exists.

Hmm, haven't played a MK since Ultimate MK 3. I'll definitely wait to see how this one turns out

Wow, fighting games are making a bit of a comeback this year eh? What with consoles online capabilities and all. Good stuff, I love MK.

GET OVER HERE!
MK might be worth a look in HD...
mberkowitz @ Mar 12th 2008 1:12PM
Yeah i haven't played a MK game since MK3. They need to totally revamp this series. They should go back to the digitized characters of the original but next gen looking, or something like that. The new ones are so cartoony.
RazLeboL @ Mar 12th 2008 1:27PM
I did play the first one that came on the gamecube. It was ok but nothing special. I hope they make it a lot better this time because I won't bother if they don't. I am looking forward to SF4 and Tekken 6.

Yeah.... the concept of playing a fighting game online is kind of funny. See, even in the best case scenario, you're dealing with a latency of at least 50ms, if not over 100ms. In a fighting game, to do blocks etc, you need to have an extremely low reaction time, and this latency pretty much prevents that. Imagine having a friend sit beside you as you play each other and have all your button presses delayed by a tenth of a second.
On that note, has anyone noticed in COD4 that even when your latency is theoretically as low as it can get, there's a huge difference in what you did and what the killcam shows? I just love it when I've safely made it to cover after taking fire, when I spontaneously die, and the killcam shows me I got shot to death before I made it behind that cover. Or when I know I've fired like 8 rounds before being shot to death, but the kill cam shows me I've only fired 3. And yes, this is when my latency is "low". Infinity Ward REALLY needs to work on the network code for this game.

Ok, so it's not just me...it can get pretty frustrating, that's why I try not to worry too much about how I'm doing (which is up-and-down badly).
In other news...
There's a Bioshock 2 in the pipeline? Does the ps3 get to get in on that hot action? =D
ArmorForVictor @ Mar 12th 2008 9:34PM
hoping for bioshock 2 on the ps3 too since no platforms have been announced yet.
Kspraydad @ Mar 12th 2008 1:46PM
Not really an announcement as much as a confirmation that the game is still coming.
In April of 2007 our very own PSF had a story (by Nick) that told us MK was on its way by end of 2008.

Wow, tons of big Fighting franchises big resurrected this year
All the 3D MK games have sucked because the game play was mediocre at best and the graphic were just like the Tekkens and Virtua Fighters of the day causing MK to lose what made it special in the first place
If they hired real actors, and created realistic 3D renders of them, and motion mapped their actual movements to the 3D versions, mix in some slick controls and gameplay, then you'd have a MK 3D in the spirit of what made MK famous to begin with....
....if it's just another cartoon 3D fighter it's going flop because just as it's predecessors before it, it will simply get lost in the crowd

...PLEASE I hope MK turns into a 3D Shooter!!
I know, you reading this, your first thought is 'omg thats just stupid'...
But trust me, I think they could pull it off for a few reasons:
1) Did you ever play Unreal Championship 2? Where you were able to play Raiden, and by certain combo's you were able to teleport, use special powers, and the best part is you were able to pull a Fatality! In a 3D Shooter! Game was kickass and most people who played it thought it was underrated
2) Imagine playing a game like Halo, Unreal Tournament, etc, where whichever character you pick, has special abilities (Like Duke Nukem 3D when you can freeze someone with the Freeze gun, or shrink someone with the shrinker), kind of like the Arbitur in Halo where you can go invisible for a certain amoutn of time
3) Characters...A lot of shooters just have the 1 common character (Except for Timesplitters, where you can be a monkey)...But with different types of characters, and with each character having their own special power, this would bring some great gameplay, like example:
going around in a map like Blood Gultch and seeing a person in the distance, using Scorpians harpoon like weapon and grab him and bring him to you as you say GET OVER HERE! then the enemeny is hurt for 1.5 seconds as you pull some type of move on him, as he wakes up he freezes you, then Raiden teleports into the fight and electrifies both of you, while Shang Tsun comes in and morphs into Lui Kang (Who Scorpian thinks is his teammate), and then Lui Kang kills Scorpian as it says Killed By Shang Tsung!
Anyway, so yes, I am crazy.

I hope Mortal Kombat turns into a 3D Shooter...
---I KNOW, The first thing you, the reader, is thinking how stupid that sounds...but let me explain a few points
Anyone remember playing Unreal Championship 2, Duke Nukem 3D?
Well in Unreal Championship 2 you were able to play Raiden from Mortal Kombat, you were able to perform his abilities like teleporting, and you were even able to perform a Fatality (In a 3D Shooter!), and the game was very kick butt and pretty underrated (A lot of people who I met that have played it agree it was underrated)
Well in Duke Nukem 3D, you were able to have some cool weapons, like this Freeze gun if you shoot someone with it they Freeze, then you can kick them and they shatter/die...There was a shrinker, if you shoot someone with it they Shrink and you can step on them!
1) Characters: Most 3D Shooters (Halo, Half-Life, etc) have only 1 or 2 characters you can choose from, and they both share the same abilities. With the Mortal Kombat universe, you have 20+ characters, each with unique powers/abilities (Like TimeSplitters where you can play a Monkey, and he's fast)...So being able to jump in a 3D Shooter game, and play a unique character, against others, would be real fun...
but now to the even funner stuff:
2) Abilities/Weapons: Imagine playing a game like Halo/Unreal Tournament, and your able to use special weapons, like Scorpian seeing someone across the way and using his 'Rope Weapon' to grab someone and pull him all the way towards him yelling COME HERE, as the enemy is unconsious for 1.5 seconds as you pull a quick menuver on him...Then as the enemy becomes concious, he freezes you and performs a little manuver on you, then Raiden teleports in there and electricutes everyone, and then across the way Shang Tsun morphs into Lui Kang and runs over to the fight, and Raiden thinks Lui Kang is his teammate (But its really Shang Tsun) and Lui Kang kills Raiden... as Raiden realizes what just happens Lui Kang (Shang Tsung) performs his Fatality...or another idea would be performing a 'Friendship' and you let the person live and you gain full health (but dont get the kill for him) and they spawn somewhere else
3) Maps/Levels: You have your typical Mortal Kombat levels, like The Pit, where your on a very high platform, with spikes on the bottom, as you have a 10 player death match, with everyone trying to kill each other, stay off the edge, yet trying to dodge bullets/fireballs/freezes/etc, you have your 'throw button' so when someone approaches near the edge you try to throw them off, etc
ANyway, Yes I'm crazy
NineT9 @ Mar 12th 2008 6:41PM
wow, sorry about the friggin triple post, i had to rewrite the whole thing because it didn't go thru before, but now it did, gosh i hate these stupid Engadget/PS3Fanboy comment systems, they really need to upgrade it

Another MK... Didn't this series get old after Babalities?? O_o
Exo @ Mar 13th 2008 4:32AM
well supposedly the series is being redone from scratch, the last one that came out was sort of a farewell to what it was, which is why it had every character in it
