Firmware 2.17 is now available for download [Update]

[Update 1: Doesn't appear Sony included notes with this firmware update. Most likely a few bug fixes have been included. If we find out more, you can be sure that we'll update.]
[Update 2: A post on the PlayStation.Blog lets us know that this is just a bug fix update. Specifically, online play for some PS3 games have been improved. Nothing to see here, folks.]
[Thanks, Drew!]

Because it's such an odd point release my guess is small bug fixes and compatibility for something released in the store tomorrow.
I'm downloading now.
WebScud @ Mar 13th 2008 12:27AM
It's installed now. There's no obvious changes.
Glen @ Mar 13th 2008 12:21AM
In-game XMB and Home included.
SURPRISE!
One can only wish...
kentuckyfried @ Mar 13th 2008 2:26AM
That would make me cry a river of joy if that happened tomorrow. =D

17 (number)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
17 (seventeen) is the natural number following 16 and preceding 18. In English, it is the smallest number with nine letters when spelled out.
Seventeen is the 7th prime number. The next prime is nineteen, with which it forms a twin prime. 17 is the sum of the first four primes. 17 is the sixth Mersenne prime exponent, yielding 131071. 17 is an Eisenstein prime with no imaginary part and real part of the form 3n − 1.
*shruggs* there you have it. Something about Eisenstein prime.

MrDaBucket @ Mar 13th 2008 3:48PM
Lol!well, at first I thought it had something to do with Warhawk and/or Home, but I guess he was just sending out a friendly reminder.
1234567yhn @ Mar 13th 2008 12:38AM
the only thing i see is when you go date and time settings and go to time zone the globe shows, maybe thats it?
Dark Archon @ Mar 13th 2008 5:31AM
Nope, that's a part of the previous update.
TCampbell76 @ Mar 13th 2008 12:36AM
My PS3 has worked flawlessly until today, the day of this firmware update. My HDMI just suddenly stopped outputting video today when I switched to its feed on my TV, still works fine on component. Tried the cable with my laptop and the cable works fine, just not sure why suddenly one day my HDMI output stops showing video - then an hour later I notice this update hits. Strange.
Darren Tilley @ Mar 13th 2008 2:20AM
That's crazy.. The exact same thing happened to my PS3 last night.. It wouldn't output video over HDMI.. It was just black. I reset everything to default, which didn't fix it. Then I tried the PS3 in my computer monitor via a DVI->HDMI adapter, and it worked.. So I hooked everything back up to my TV and it was working again.
That seems like a bit of a coincidence that we both had the exact same issue a night apart.
John Benoit @ Mar 13th 2008 9:36PM
I had exactly the same problem two days ago. How weird is that?! My PS3 stopped outputting over HDMI, and I had to turn it off, re-start it and re-do my video and audio settings.
Panathas17 @ Mar 14th 2008 2:58PM
Nope, hasn't happened to me...
Patman @ Mar 13th 2008 12:40AM
oh wow... tis a big update to not include anything but a few bugs fixes, don't you think?
anything on remote play? i need a fix for that one... my system keeps doing double-takes on shutdowns and turns back on...
why sony? WHYYYYYYYYY??????
Kxpuc @ Mar 13th 2008 1:12AM
that's a router thing on that just look it up on the playstation forums
Popfrogs @ Mar 13th 2008 10:20AM
That remote play bouncing thing was fixed a long time ago in 2.02 or something.
buzzbean @ Mar 13th 2008 10:26AM
I agree, remote play needs to be fixed. Either you need to be a network admin to get the damn thing working, or your screwed. The only fix sony sent out was to disable remote play if your PS3 turns on by itself.
koehler83 @ Mar 13th 2008 12:39AM
Perhaps unrelated.. but I actually just updated my PlayOnline (PS2 application for Final Fantasy XI) today on my 60GB PS3. As a result, I temporarily lost PS2 compatibility and all my Bluetooth accessories profiles were lost. Even my SIXAXIS controllers wouldnt connect.
It was very weird.
qbanboi @ Mar 13th 2008 12:40AM
It add, well i'm not 100% sure. But what i noticed, is that the new firmware add some backward compatibility, for some games, that before had errors, or didn't play.
For example, now i can play Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 2, on my Ps3, before i couldn't.
I think, it may be because of the new MGS pack that is coming. I heard that there was not problem, with the MGS1, and MGS2, but the 3 one, was having some problems. Well, i hope i'm right. ^^
Patman @ Mar 13th 2008 12:44AM
if only for in-game XMB...
btw what is "Home" anyway?
plz dont flame! ;)
Mein Bratwurst @ Mar 13th 2008 12:47AM

Or read up on it at ign.
bulbous_shot @ Mar 13th 2008 12:49AM
I won't flame you. I'll just politely ask you if you've been living under a rock for a year or longer.
1234567yhn @ Mar 13th 2008 12:47AM
just found in security setting bd/dvd region code setting or was that there already?
Tim Parsons @ Mar 13th 2008 1:02AM
LOL of course it was,. I havent downloaded this update yet and it's there, That's actually been there ever since the Firmware that shipped when the PS3 was launched
koehler83 @ Mar 13th 2008 6:08AM
Remote Start problems are not firmware issues. They're port issues with your router.
Patman @ Mar 13th 2008 1:12AM
LOL @ bulbous_shot
i read what it was right before checking the comments again.
and about its existence, i had no idea of it until now. I have seen the logo before, however.

wocyob @ Mar 13th 2008 1:03AM
i find it kind of odd for and update that might fix some bugs.... but with out any notes saying what it did is pretty strange to me...every update needs notes to know what the hell it is maybe theres something bigger here that we dont know yet... only time will tell
DonRWatters @ Mar 13th 2008 1:11AM
I don't remember having flash support before...maybe it was there. This is the first time I've gone to YouTube in the browser and actually seen videos.
vegi-saurus @ Mar 13th 2008 1:06AM
S...l...o...w...e...s...t update ever. I just want to play Warhawk!
Drew82 @ Mar 13th 2008 1:09AM
You no longer need to be wired to the PS3 to initialize the Firmware install? If that wasn't there already and I didn't realize it...FINALLY!
I hated having to walk across the room to plug in a "wireless" controller! =P
Tim Parsons @ Mar 13th 2008 1:43AM
that's been that way since like june or around there
cloudnine @ Mar 13th 2008 1:09AM
You can now access the XMB while playing a video.
matthew_neitzer @ Mar 13th 2008 1:31AM
You're kidding, right? But seriously, that has been there for a while. It's pretty cool, though.
Patman @ Mar 13th 2008 1:31AM
yeah, right? it takes forever for a few "bug fixes". I have a feeling this update may lead to more in the future. perhaps Home and/or ingame XMB soon after?
sidenote; if Sony incorporates Home with all its social compatibility and the in-game xmb, the the xbox has nowhere to run. Live would be pwnt (anally) by Home, and the Live pause menu would be out-classed by the entire XMB (with music playback ingame?) on the pause menu.
DO IT SONY! DOOOO EEEEEEEEET!
Patman @ Mar 13th 2008 1:12AM
oops
sorry for repeated comment :(
Patman @ Mar 13th 2008 1:14AM
flash support was there before. I remember being able to see the "This is Sparta 300 Techno Remix" on the browser.
good times... ;)
tom @ Mar 13th 2008 1:23AM
my Call of Duty 4 is taking forever to set up a game
Tim Parsons @ Mar 13th 2008 1:44AM
yeah that has been there for awhile
Mark Kenworthy @ Mar 13th 2008 1:56AM
wow i can play games now!

Kspraydad @ Mar 13th 2008 2:05AM
Did that comment belong in the Xbox RRoD thread?
1. Time and Date has a pretty World locater graphic under Time Zone
2. Store definitely seems snappier
All I've noticed sofar.
WTF iz dat about @ Mar 13th 2008 2:09AM
LOL at everyone trying find something new about the update but instead discovers stuff that been there 4 ages. The updates are the ps3 can support canon printers and photo trimming....thats it from what i can C
Tim Parsons @ Mar 13th 2008 2:16AM
LOL you make fun of those finding "updates" that were already there and you do the same, both were there b4
jimmyink @ Mar 13th 2008 9:06AM
Yay! DivX Support! Finally!
