Warhawk thrusts to 500,000 player landmark
It took some time, but it's finally done it: Incognito's online-only Warhawk has reached the 500,000 registered player mark. The game was an interesting and risky venture for Sony: would people pay to play a game without a single player component? Looks like the answer is "yes."
Warhawk was the first game to take advantage of a new business model Sony is implementing in this generation. Warhawk is available on Blu-ray and as a downloadable. The $40 price point is high for a downloadable, but contains much more content than the average downloadable game.
We're certain that Warhawk fans will be pleased by the news -- Dylan Jobe said that more DLC will come to the game "as long as the community exists." It looks like it's going quite strong.

Warhawk is a great game!! Its very addicting and very fun to play! I'm very pleased in picking this game up and I'm looking forward to see what DLC comes our way!

Cool! One person per hour that I have logged playing! Bring on the B. Mirror!

While I guess I should be encouraged by this number I can't help but feel a lil ashamed that it's only 500,000...this number sounds too low. I've said it before and I'll say it again...why aren't more people playing this game?? It's one of the best games on the system. I have a pretty busy schedule during the week but I try to play at least once a day...so many memorable moment of intense gun fighting....sh** blowin up all over the place....the sound of Warhawks flying overhead. I'm really surprised that the gameplay hasn't gotten old to me yet. Capture the Flag (CTF) is the best...many times tryin to get the flag off their base and back to ours...I leave the game shaking. LOL Suffice it say I LOVE THIS GAME and so should you....LOL

The game is awesome but 500,000 is not a lot. It probably didn't cost them too much to develop it though.
zanpher717 @ Mar 18th 2008 11:27AM
I will agree, this game is awesome. Play it for hours a day sometimes and it kicks ass. 500,000 is a decent number. But Ken is right, more people need to be playing.

I played it religiously until I signed in one day and my rank was gone and everything was set back to 0.
I might get back into it again though.

I play it some, but I can pretty much only stand to play dogfights... I just can't stand FPS gaming with dual analogs. It feels so horribly inaccurate and slow. I guess since I never played halo, I didn't get the reflexes down... I've been playing KB&M for over a decade... hard to get used to the analogs.
Love the dogfights, though!
Steve Childs @ Mar 18th 2008 11:57AM
I agree, but I've got used to the analogs now, it just takes a while and quite a few deaths to get used to it.
Really, what would be good is if they would add AI into the game, so you can have Bots in a local game, so you can play locally against some bots to learn the maps & weapon locations so you don't get murdered online for the first couple of weeks.
500,000 isn't bad for a game which is Online only...
The upcoming 1.3 patch looks good as well, I only wish they would improve the controls so it makes aiming a bit easier, as a K&M veteran, its very hard to snipe someone with the analogs.
Justin @ Mar 18th 2008 11:40AM
Its not FPS though.
edboy @ Mar 18th 2008 12:13PM
Sniping is supposed to be hard, this way you have to develop the skill of sniping. Otherwise everyone could sit back and pick people off...
It's like learning to be one in real life...takes time and dedication...
Steve Childs @ Mar 19th 2008 3:34AM
edboy - I agree it should be hard, I'm not suggesting auto-aim or anything! But aiming via a mouse is a damn sight easier than an analog stick which has no ability for fine movement.
What I wish they'd add is the function where you can hold down L1 to allow you to make fine adjustments when aiming. I just find its very hard to make fine adjustments without it jumping all over the place.
glitched @ Mar 19th 2008 10:38AM
here's the trick, if you know you are going to be spending a round sniping, go into the options and turn down the sensitivity.
I have several "presets" that I use depending on my play style for a round - and will often even change it during the re-spawn coutdown.
Popfrogs @ Mar 18th 2008 11:40AM
I used to love it before they nerfed the tanks. That was the only vehicle I felt safe in...the Warhawks are made out of paper mache. Nothing more fun than rolling in a tank with someone else driving, you pop the lid and get off some heat seekers to swat that pesky Warhawk that's been pecking at you.
Good times, good times. Maybe I'll fire it up again tonight to see if I still suck at flying.
one321 @ Mar 18th 2008 12:35PM
Right on! I always start up Warhawk thinking I will try out my flying skills again only to realize I will never be good at it. I really wish I could fly...
Austin @ Mar 19th 2008 5:59PM
ha i havn't played that game since release. it's kinda full of dust. It's a cool game and all but for some reason i never really developed a wanna play attitude for it.
Kyle @ Mar 18th 2008 11:43AM
Congrats to Incognito, job well done. Didn't seem like it was that long ago when there were talks of Sony closing the studio down much like FASA Interactive with Shadowrun. I remember comparing this game to Shadowrun until it release when I dropped the $40 on it day one, and loved every minute of playing it. Here's to future success for Warhawk and more importatnly Incognito.
GRT @ Mar 18th 2008 11:53AM
I don't play it because there's no single player component. I'd love to see them add bots for a Warhawk 2.
I'm not complaining; I'm just saying that the potential audience is a bit limited. Some PS3 owners don't have their machines online (hard to believe I know!) and some just don't have the time to develop the skills needed to play multiplayer.
I don't care if I suck if I'm playing with bots, but I hate playing MP games and sucking and letting down my team, so I just opt out.
edboy @ Mar 18th 2008 12:10PM
I was the same way, but there are rank controlled servers. I started on the lower servers and learned and worked my way up to a killing machine!
This is the first online game I've played and stuck with, it is digital crack in its purest form!!!
Fane @ Mar 18th 2008 10:01PM
@edboyHey,Got any suggestions for how to set your filters to find a n00b-friendly game (especially ranked)? I'm finding it hard to get my feet wet without getting destroyed.Anyone who feels helpful, message me.PSN: fane1024Sorry for the off-topic post.
Joe12 @ Mar 18th 2008 12:14PM
This game has some of the sickest, intense and funniest online battles I've ever had on any system. Bought it at launch date and still can't get enough of this game. For some reason It doesn't get boring to me. Is a different experience every time...latest for me: Planes flooding the sky with air mines (sorry guilty for this one) or just planting mines in planes of enemy bases (pisses me off!) :P It just doesn't get any better. My favorite game on the ps3 hands down!

Patrick @ Mar 22nd 2008 12:29AM
flying games and as well third person shooters don't do well online at all, plus there aren't much out there. 500k is not bad at all. If all those 500k played on a regular basis than thats pretty good.
shase @ Mar 18th 2008 12:19PM
I haven't played it yet... been busy and other games kept flooding in and been playing trauma center with recent purchase of wii. I think the biggest hurdle for me is shelling out 40 for a multiplayer game and am not sure if i will get sick of it or not.
gordon_strange @ Mar 18th 2008 12:36PM
mate i was the same as i dont really do war games, but its seriously awesome fun. its third person (which is great for me as fps give me motion sickness), and its more 'arcadey' than other war games. buy it, and feel free to add me for a game dude!
John @ Mar 18th 2008 9:34PM
I don't tend to play these games, especially online. But I found, as others are saying, there is such a variance from one battle to another... I sucked generally, and yet, as someone pointed out, it is more 'arcadey'-- and I was surprised that I could keep playing. I rented it, I will again soon, since the last online I played was Unreal3 which was surprisingly enjoyable now I'm curious how Warhawk will feel since I've gotten a little better at FPS.
rabid1 @ Mar 18th 2008 12:36PM
I don't know why but I just can't get into this game. Might be because I really suck at it. I hate getting beat down every damn fight I get into. If I had somewhere to practice and get to know the controls/map/ environment in general then I might play it. However, now it is just a waste of $40 that I can't even take to EB for some cheap trade credit.
Popfrogs @ Mar 18th 2008 12:49PM
You need to start out in the rank controlled servers, play with other noobs and you'll be fine. You do have a good point though which is why Incognito designed the server browser the way they did. Nothing sucks worse than getting so pwnd that you want to sell the game.
xFenixKnightx @ Mar 18th 2008 12:57PM
Damnit I need to get this game. I keep forgetting!!
NaCHOburger @ Mar 18th 2008 2:02PM
Yes you don need to get this game. It is a must buy for the PS3.
Keep the Warhawk community going and strong.

Warhawk is definitely one of the best games on my list. Play it whenever possible.
Just remember me, vegi-saurus, as i'll pwn you. :p
Robobagins @ Mar 18th 2008 2:09PM
I love Warhawk. I play at least once a week with my clan.
Popfrogs @ Mar 18th 2008 2:33PM
Oh just wanted to add one more thing...this is one of the few games that allows you to 'meet' players. You can go into your buddy list Met Players and add people you played against in Warhawk. I've met alot of friends this way. EoJ does this also, as does the Lost Planet demo.
I hope eventually all games support this forgotten option.
Emophia @ Mar 18th 2008 3:29PM
That seems like a really low number...
SnipersParadise @ Mar 18th 2008 4:45PM
like most games when you entered your bashed and called a noob, it took so long for people to respect me on most of these online games that I end up getting fed up, and moving to something else. theres a lot of good players in this game that will help you out when you need it, or knife you in the back for a Team Kill when your going for the flag or base. if you dont start the game the second it comes out, it takes a while but once people start helping ya it makes it a lot better. maybe i'll start playing it again when the DLC comes.
playcrackthesky @ Mar 18th 2008 7:10PM
I use to love this game, played everyday...and then one day I just didnt enjoy it that much.
Then came omega. I purchased that, spent half an hour trying to find a game then when I did no one was using any tactics. They flew the big ship on their own without picking anyone up. It just didnt feel like a proper team game. I dont know, I love it at heart though and sh1ts me that im still not into it.
Brandon @ Mar 19th 2008 12:06PM
I only bought this because my PS3 was one of the few to conk out (stopped reading discs) and I needed a game to play while I stacked the money for a repair. So I downloaded it and it turned out to be a great decision, Warhawk is addicting as all hell.
Stu @ Mar 19th 2008 12:19PM
I agree, great game. Although I have noticed a trend in arbiters banning people for absolutely no reason at all now. I was banned from a server because of the amount of times I have killed an arbiter. Now that is ridiculous. I don't cheat (you can't really) and I don't swear at people over a headset. I'm a responsible gamer in my 30's with years of experience and having some snot nosed kid pull teh plug on me because I've beaten them fair and square is just not on.. I just killed the guy about 10 times in a row from all over different sections of the Battle for Eucadia map. It's happened to me twice now. Gamers like me will stop playing this game if we can't get into any official servers and the player count will dwindle.
Sort it out Sony.
glitched @ Mar 20th 2008 1:01AM
sounds like you were on a private server and not a ranked server... i don think that was an arbiter...
