GameStop predicts continuing PSP 'supply issues'

During the holiday season, the PSP was quite a difficult item to find. Many retail stores continued to run out of the hardware -- has supply been an issue since? It appears that sales of Sony's handheld are doing surprisingly well. A quick look at last month's NPD shows that PSP is continuing to gain momentum.

Over here in Britian, I persuaded my brother and sister to buy a psp (and trade in their ds's :) ) they got the last two in the shop, which was fortuanate. the guy said that there has been a sudden surge of psp and ds sales lately. they bought theres just after christmas.

Im really glad that the psp is doing well this year. In the philippines it is more popular than the DS, unfortunately it is due to piracy that is selling here very well. Even DS bootleg cartridges are expensive compared to iso's that you can just download from the stores.......yes the game stores here offer pirated downloads of all the psp games ever made even new ones. The price of umd's here are the same in europe and since this is a poor country everyone uses CFW's for iso's. Anyway im not saying that i dont use pirated games...i do but i also have about 12 umd games that has cost me a fortune to purchase since i liked them very much and would rather have the originals as part of my collection. I just wish that the prices of umd's would go down since theyre basically just small dvd's in a plastic case so that everyone can buy them and not pirate them because of the pricing.

you DON'T HAVE to go to a gamestop to buy games, i personally think that target has some better stock than gamestop or eb games.

yes that's where i like to get games too plus they don't ask you everytime you purchase a game if you would like to preorder something.

When I bought my silver slim PSP at a Pittsburgh-area Best Buy in January, they had plenty of the Daxter Entertainment Packs. Very strange that GameStop doesn't have any. Maybe they're lying and not stocking them because they're just not as popular as the DS (vgchartz.com). Though I don't know why, because to me the PSP is superior because it has great demos for it and you can surf the web and play music on it...

Everywhere I've been--Target, Best Buy, GameStop--PSP's have been in stock. Not really sure what amount (or lack thereof) constitutes a shortage, but everything seems fine to me.

I'm sure GameStop actually means they're having "supply issues" with used PSPs. The used games/consoles market is, after all, where they make the most money.

Well, I realize that Gamestop hate is strong these days, but I for one am kind of glad that the PSP is selling so well for them. I myself just bought a PSP for myself this month, but it was a little challenging for me to find one on the day I wanted it.
Walmart didn't have any that day, and the local Gamestop only had Daxter packs (I wanted a Core). Eventually I had to travel to another Gamestop about 20 minutes away to get one. I was immensely happy with the purchase though, so it was worth it.

worked at target during the holidays. About the first week into december, we sold our last psp. I didn't see any until February.

seems to me like sony is intentionally keeping production down to make it seem like its selling really well. and the funny thing is it probably makes people want to buy a psp even more just so they can have a hot commodity.

From what I've seen with my own eyes, heard from their own reps with my own ears and read about online, I am convinced GameStop has an actual policy to emphasize and promote Nintendo products over Sony. Whether this is a secret deal with Nintendo for $$$ or simply their own corporate scheme is unclear, but the bias shows all the way down to their employees advocating Nintendo products to any prospective buyers. I've actually gotten into arguments with EB and GS reps trying to dissuade people from buying a PSP or PS3 and feeding them inaccurate information.
It doesn't surprise me they plan to short stock the PSP hardware. They get maybe 3-5 copies of BIG new games and are always out of stock of the popular titles.

Yeah, I never noticed a shortage of stock, at any store, around the Milwaukee area either, even back before the Christmas season.
I was seriously considering trading in my old PSP for a brand new slim, and, if anything, all the GameStops seemed to have an abundance of PSPs.
Weird.

What the hell? When did shopping for a video game system become like shopping in the USSR at the height of the cold war?
There was a time in America when if you wanted to 'purchase' something you went to these places called 'stores' and they had the very thing you wanted to purchase on the 'shelf' in fancy 'boxes'. Now its all 'pre-buy' this or that or risk waiting in line in freezing temperatures over night for the chance to be one of the lucky people to get one of the 20 or so consoles delivered to the store.
I mean what the hell, Capitalism? WHAT THE HELL? You are failing us! If I wanted to wait in line to not buy something I would invent a fricking time machine and go stand in line for toilet paper in the 1980's Soviet Union. At least then I would get some Vodka and good conversation with some grumpy old Bolsheviks.

When I try to but a psp I went to bestbuy and they told me that the store is having supply issues and I got the last one

I work at an EB Games, and we have way too many PSPs in stock. It's actually ridiculous.
