Ten year life cycle for PSP, promises Koller
Three down ... seven more to go?Sony has often touted the PlayStation brand as a long-living one. The PS1 had a lengthy life cycle, and the PS2 still goes strong today. Many thought Sony's claim that PS3 would have a ten year life cycle was a joke -- but considering Sony's track record with the PS2, we wouldn't be surprised to see Sony go for such an ambitious plan.
How will PSP remain a 10 year product? FIrmware updates and hardware revisions will undoubtedly keep the system fresh for years to come. In spite of the release of the redesigned PSP-2000, original PSP owners are still able to access many new features, and can still play all new games. John Koller told IGN: "We've talked about the PSP being a 10 year product, but a 10 year product in the continued... how can I put this... in the continued lifecycle, so we obviously had the 1000, we have the 2000, so the PSP as it was first launched in March 2005 isn't going to the be the PSP that it ends up as in 10 years"

I still wish they'd add a model with a second analog and just have all new games support a legacy control scheme that would suit the 1-nubbed models. Highly doubtful, but that's the one hardware revision I'd buy a second PSP for.

Mario?! BURN, INFIDEL!
:-)
Kane @ Mar 26th 2008 11:47PM
Well lets hope they fix the piracy issue in the next hardware upgrade (PSP-3000?) because I don't see software support lasting for 7 more years.
Maverick Saturn @ Mar 26th 2008 11:50PM
All I think they will do is just modify the current PSP like they did with lite. Mae subtle changes to the tech, and resell.
Gennataos @ Mar 27th 2008 12:07AM
I've love to see some sort of clamshell design and them somehow put the whammy on piracy, neither of which I believe we'll see.
kastonie @ Mar 27th 2008 12:23PM
yeah...a clamshell, with 2 screens.....and make one of them a touchscreen,.....yea...that would be awesome...i wish there was something out like that.....
Dahk @ Mar 27th 2008 12:10AM
= Confirmation that PSPhone is arriving with backwards compatibility? Craaaap they're dumping UMDs in it?!
Mr.ESC @ Mar 27th 2008 12:18AM
I actually would like a new one with a second analog stick.
One of the things I like about the DS is that the design is simple yet effective, the PSP is saturated with functions I don't even need.
Also that I would like it if the TV cables could be just HMDI or just 3 simple cables to connect it fast to any side entry in any HDTV.I hate having to disconnect the xbox 360 to connect the PSP.
Kspraydad @ Mar 27th 2008 2:11AM
I fail to see how ANY of PSP's additional functions prohibit you from turning it on and going directly into game mode if that is your preference.
As for TV out...why are you complaining about the added function (compared to DS) when you just said you wished it wasn't loaded down with features.
/back to my RSS feeds on my PSP.
richard @ Mar 27th 2008 3:25AM
"Features you don't even need!?!" you "don't even need" a psp, but you like the video out mode, and the games.... you want them... Well the rest of the world who are actually intellegent enough to understand the features all want a few of them. So one person might not use skype, or the radio, but they use the video out, and rss, it has something for everyone... I don't know anyone who uses tivo on it, but I'm sure some ppl do, I guess it comes down to whether or not you want to pull out of the dealership w/ just the basic factory installed, or if you want the fully loaded model.... I'm content w/ the fully loaded model, and if I'm not happy w/ a feature (that I got for free, I might add) I'll just overlook it when I'm using one of the many that I am happy w/
Jacksons @ Mar 27th 2008 1:38PM
I can't say I'm bothered by the extra functions on my PSP. I don't use them either, but they're not kicking my puppy or anything.

If Nintendo and MS decides to release new hardware before ten years, then this won't matter. Sony will have to release new hardware to stay competitive. It was a big mistake from Sony to have allowed the 360 a 1 year head start.
Kspraydad @ Mar 27th 2008 2:17AM
Yes...it would have been MUCH better to rush the PS3 out the door even sooner than it was (it is only now starting to hit its stride)...MS proved you can build a quality (!!) product buy rushing it out the door.
You seem to forget that SONY didn't cut off the PS2 like MS did the Xbox and that the PS2 continued to outsell the X360 worldwide until very recently.
Teddy @ Mar 27th 2008 12:24AM
I think 7 years is more likely, but who knows, maybe Sony can push it to 10.
Extinction @ Mar 27th 2008 12:28AM
Sure beats the 2 year average in the gameboy line
Brian @ Mar 27th 2008 12:44AM
Uh, they probably will have revisions every two years. He is only saying that the PSP line will likely last 10 years.
Extinction @ Mar 29th 2008 2:29PM
Yes, however Gameboy got entirely new ones every 2 years. GB, GBC, GBA, DS.
Ryan @ Mar 27th 2008 12:51AM
It has been great to see the evolution of the psp over the past three years. From the launch day excitement, to the first firmware update. Then came PS3 remote play, and the location free player. And now a new slim, lite, psp2000 with support for skype and go messenger. Also new peripherals like microphones, headsets, cameras and GPS are now available...sort of. It has also been a wild ride for the memory stick duo. Remember waiting forever for the 1gig duo to come out. Now we have a 16gig duo available. With the addition of the PSN store your going to need it. PSone classics are now available for download as well as PSN exclusives like Beats, and Flow. Who knows what the next 8 years will hold for the psp. I think in the future we will see 3rd and 4th generation psp systems with even more features. Maybe a built in HD, or how about an all downloadable content psp with no UMD drive. I now have 3 working psp systems. One from launch day three years ago, one from a year later, and my new pimped out white psp2000 with extended battery, camera, and headset. I am sure that over the next 8 years I will add a few more to my collection. Lets just hope it doesn't take Sony 8 years to put out a psp version of Gran Turismo!
rom @ Mar 27th 2008 12:55AM
I just bought a PSP 3 days ago...So this is really great news, as it was something I was worried about.
Now I just hope they don't make future games that depend, or that play drastically better, on newer hardware. I don't want to buy yet another PSP just to play newer games.
Da @ Mar 27th 2008 1:41AM
You also have to remember this doesn't mean it'll be 10 years before PSP2 (or whatever), it just means PSP will be supported that long.
Take PS2 for example, the target is a 10 year lifecycle, and it's still going even though the PS3 has been released.
Paulo @ Mar 27th 2008 8:09AM
Just keep throwing me good games (like Monster Hunter and Crisis Core) and new firmware and I'll stay as loyal as I can be.
But I would like the PC PSN to hit Brazil as well... I want to play flOw you know...
Ghaleon @ Mar 27th 2008 10:28AM
Maybe in one of those revisions they can fix the D-pad and come up with something a little more functional than the nub? Or if they were going to do vid out, they should let you plug a PSX controller in.
SKI @ Mar 27th 2008 11:03AM
Why am I the only one who is fearing the fact that he basically said that many more revisions are coming?
Joe @ Mar 27th 2008 11:23AM
I hope this is a joke I was looking forward to buying another PSP and this time a PSP2 in 2010. Because that is when I could see the new one come out.
I also want another analog stick and this time both be more of a stick over a nub.
I also was wanting a mic added for online play. Plus a touch screen because after using the itouch I think a touch screen would be a big plus for the next PSP.
Also didn't Ready at Dawn say they used 80% of the PSP's power on GoW and if that is true what are devs going to do for the next couple of year when there is no thing more they can push on the PSP.
But I also wonder if Sony could mean that they think the PSP will live ten years and push for smaller devs to make games for the PSP even when the PSP2 is out. So there plan would be some thing like the PS2 and how it is still getting great games even though the PS3 is out.
joey @ Mar 27th 2008 11:59AM
The only thing that'll remain the same after ten years is the LOGO.
Hopefully they'll dump the UMD and add storage space.
And the PSP slim^2 will half the size.
Sony sure do love their propriotary format don't they?
Remember MiniDisc
Alien @ Mar 27th 2008 12:19PM
10 years ... its a longshot but its possible ...
Brian @ Mar 27th 2008 1:45PM
well it's possible .... with firmware upgrades and some new models. I don't really see them dropping umds untill PSP 2, but they could always do things to increase/improve the features of the PSP. A new slim model in a design with a built in keyboard and camera (just think sidekick). I'm looking forward to see the future of the PSP games and hardware.
Mills and Boom @ Mar 28th 2008 8:51AM
10 years? I don't see that happening. None of Sony's hardware has done 10 supported years yet, I doubt the PSP and PS3 (their worst performing products) doing this.
I could imagine the DS Lite lasting 10 years. Only the GB has done this yet, but the DS has got the support and sales to keep it alive for a very long time.
