When you hear the word "soon" from Polyphony Digital, you have to interpret it as "in a year, or our next game" at the very least. Anyway,
Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi
said they've been in talks with automobile manufacturers who initially "hated the idea of deformation, now they're slowly coming around to it ... We've still got a few to convince, but we will. Expect deformation in the very near future: very, very soon." Sounds almost too good to be true!
Yamauchi also talks briefly about
Prologue, but it's nothing particularly new. He apologizes to fans for not being able to shovel out a full game all in one go, but we're fine with this set-up -- we want Polyphony to get the game to where they want it before releasing it.

Good, it might stop people playing bumper cars online!
Tranando @ Mar 29th 2008 3:49PM
Polyphony, take as long as it takes.. The Gran Turismo series all about perfection....
We have GT5:P to keep us happy, and GT4 if we want to do Nordschleife :-)
Some updates to GT5:P would keep the troops sweet however :-)
John McPoop @ Mar 30th 2008 10:49PM
Killjebus needs to be thanked for this as he broke this news days ago... If its the same video I saw before the guys voiceover was laughable at best
Nick @ Mar 29th 2008 3:56PM
GT5P rocks, hopefully we can host matches etc and invite privately...
Hope that Poly are using this Prologue as a test, change things around and evolve the Prologue game through updates, so when it comes to online/normal play on the full GT5 it will be perfection!
alba @ Mar 29th 2008 5:10PM
hope?
It's not hope, prologue is there for fans to help out shape the online experience, they only have the "closed" japanese GT4 online test to start things so now they'll get all the experience they can get until they deliver GT5 so, it's bound to happen since this is the first GT with online capabilities on the get-go :}
Just give it time ;)
paul @ Mar 29th 2008 4:07PM
add the Nordschleife pleaseeeee
Game_playa @ Mar 29th 2008 5:02PM
This was on Kotaku a week ago!
Anyway, I hope the deformation is better than Burnouts as it was good, but wasn't even 50% realistic.
brettjr @ Mar 29th 2008 5:10PM
I don't get Poly at all why is it they can't use certain cars because they won't let them or they can't have damage cause they don't want them too when EVERYONE else is doing those things?
Are car manufactures paying GT expenses and such? Is that why Poly is, excuse the bad language but sucking their dick?
GT is going to be left far behind pretty soon if they don't start getting with the times.
The Sound @ Mar 29th 2008 5:47PM
'Are car manufactures paying GT expenses and such? Is that why Poly is, excuse the bad language but sucking their dick? '
Other way around. PD are paying for licenses to use the cars with the name, designs, specs, etc.
Da @ Mar 30th 2008 7:00AM
Not true bud, GT has NEVER paid for licensing. The reason others have deformation and more cars etc is because they pay for them.
The manufactures get a good deal, because having your car in GT can boost it's popularity.
bigd7387 @ Mar 29th 2008 5:41PM
Deformation of cars in-game has been an issue for a while with almost all the games. Some games go the "fake car route" and the ones that use real cars have poor deformation, like Project Gotham Racing where a bent mirror was a damaged car. Car manufactures don't want to show their car in a negative light no matter the cost or how much they could make in money, since what they really care about is the prestige. I could really care less, if I want a blown up car game then I'll go with an EA arcade series or a Dirt but for real simulation I'll stay with GT.
yomama07024 @ Mar 29th 2008 6:02PM
What's deformation?

car damage
Popfrogs @ Mar 29th 2008 6:04PM
Spoken like a true trolling Xbot. At least Microsoft and all their exclusive (if you don't count the PC) titles cater to kids like you whose idea of gaming is chasing people and shooting them.
Seriously though, do you zombies ever get tired of playing cowboys and indians?
Joshua @ Mar 29th 2008 6:08PM
First of all, I am not car crazy, so the inherent appeal of GT is just not there for me. That said, the lack of visible damage to my vehicle in GTHD Concept really saps a lot of the experience out of the game for me. The game looks great, but when I crash into a guardrail and nothing happens, it just look ridiculous.
(IRE)Wolfman @ Mar 29th 2008 7:14PM
You mean you didn't die?
Isn't the point of the game not to crash?
naruto007 @ Mar 30th 2008 12:11AM
you could also grab your car and crash it against a wall to make it feel real.
leiwei @ Mar 30th 2008 1:00AM
Sorry buddy, but if you crash in a racing sim, then these types of games are probably not for you. Burnout is probably a better choice. Sure GTHD didn't have any physical damage nor does GT5p at this moment, and sure games like Indycar Racing way back in the early 90s had it, but it doesn't take away the fact that GT5p is leaps and bounds a big upgrade from the earlier GT series. The graphics, # of cars on screen, and physics are much improved. Add to that the inclusion of in-cockpit view that many fans wished for and GT5p serving as a testing ground for the online play. Even the annoying squeeling tire noise is now gradual/subtle.
ldd @ Mar 29th 2008 6:43PM
I find most FPS repetitive and annoying, as well as repetitive. In other words, they give me no pleasure. They are not fun. Do you see me posting this in a FPS-related post? No. I accept the fact that other people are entitled to have different opinions. If, by playing an RPG or a racing game, one is to be considered "boring" or not a "true-gamer" by someone else, I cannot do anything but think that this stupid. Please, keep in mind that I truly believe you can enjoy an fps. I am glad that you enjoy them. So please, let other people have fun doing what they want. (long post? lol)
ldd @ Mar 29th 2008 6:44PM
this *is* stupid
massive_98 @ Mar 29th 2008 8:13PM
He said it is coming very, very soon. So translating Polyphonish to English that means maybe in time for GT5.The problem is that if one car company says no, they can't have some cars dent and others left untouched.
Christian @ Mar 29th 2008 8:17PM
I don't understand why some people make an issue of the deformation. GT is about enjoying beautiful and true to nature looking cars and simulating driving. Sure some scratches etc., would make things look even more realistic, but if spectacular crashes is what I am in the mood for then I play Burnout Paradise and not GT.
jorge @ Mar 29th 2008 9:56PM
they have to put realtime damage a wheater effects
leiwei @ Mar 29th 2008 10:11PM
Maybe PD doesn't want to create car damage that isn't realistic. Losing a bumper or two, the hood smashed, and the windshield cracked can easily be done, but that means the animation or the damage will look pretty much the same each time. To be more realistic, PD probably wants to go the realistic route and get crash-test data from car manufacturers. Maybe that would mean damage from different points of the car would reflect both mechanically and aesthetically to the car you're driving in.
John McPoop @ Mar 30th 2008 10:59PM
Your dead on, Sir!
They want to have physics based damage and not some animation thats the same no matter where you crash *cough* forza *cough*... PDi is also actually modeling over 200 moving parts of the drive train in addition to the interiors down to the radio knobs... Also, they are going to incorporate real time weather effects... As in not the same weather animation every time like say Madden Football..... Anytime PDi does something they do it right... The only promise they never kept was online in GT 4 but there was no network infrastructure in place like there is now with the PSN.... I can't wait for GT:P to hit here in America because I will love the photo realistic graphics, 16 player lag free online racing and all the beauty that is Gran Turismo....
leiwei @ Mar 29th 2008 10:14PM
And yea, they do change things around in Prologue and you can see how much they've evolved in a sense. Take from GTHD which was just a high-def version of GT4 really. Then jump into GT5p Japanese version which I have, which was really great. And now that huge update that changed GT5p japanese to pretty much what the US/EU has, an extra 30 some cars and the extra high-speed ring track, as well as 2-player split screen.
Now compare the original Japanese version tracks that most people on Digg and n4g said was "boring" against the high-speed ring which is pure beauty and you can see how much work they're putting into this game. Can you even imagine how different GT5 will be?
I remember GT4 prologue vs GT4 retail was a huge difference.
Nick @ Mar 29th 2008 11:18PM
I have a feeling that poly will make it realistic, which may mean crashing a couple of cars, either that or make algorithms for each car depending on their design/structure etc.
One reason someone thought of was that they didnt wanna see how badly a car would crash. like in GT5 if you crashed a lambo and a ferrari and the ferrari catches on fire... you gonna buy a lambo lol
eugene @ Mar 29th 2008 11:46PM
I don't understand the people who are saying they are "meh" about deformation because they're interested in simulation games and not crash'em up games like burnout... a true simulation SHOULD take into account all the real physics behind something, including deformation, tire wear, fuel consumption, weight and balance issues, and weather conditions should affect more than just visibility, it should affect how the car reacts to the road. For off road games, track and terrain deformation should also be there.
Aircraft sims have paid attention to this level of realism and I look forward to the day when GT is able to truly call itself a driving simulation. Until then, it may be more realistic than other driving games, but it is still a game and not a true simulation.
Popfrogs @ Mar 30th 2008 12:13PM
Well, technically, they've always called GT a driving simulator, not a crashing simulator. I agree that deformation and damage should be included, but it should be optional. I hated that F1 demo because those cars were so fragile, you couldn't do anything but race perfectly without crippling your car and ending your race.
In summary, I appreciate what true driving nerds want, but it has the potential to ruin the fun factor for the rest of us. If it's in, I want the option to disable it, online and offline.
leiwei @ Mar 30th 2008 1:02AM
It may not be a true racing sim, but it's a pretty decent one for a console game. If I wanted a real racing sim I'd go the PC route. Oh I don't want to see an MS Flight Simulator on a console. =D
Jove @ Mar 30th 2008 5:01AM
...hey dudes i just wanted to comment that i was reading on wikipedia the article about ben wallace and someone changed a lot of the things it says and theres a lot of crazy things there. i would change them back but i dont know how so if someone can check it out then please correct some of the things there, thanks...
Da @ Mar 30th 2008 7:04AM
"Aircraft sims have paid attention to this level of realism"
lol, so crashing in an aircraft sim is realistic?
And for your information, GT5 will have tirewear and fuel consumption just like GT4 did years ago. I'm really questioning whether you've even played any of these games..

automobile manufacturers? Hah. Right. So Forza 2 (which is better, even though you fanboys wouldnt acknowledge it), which features most of the same manufacturers, has proper damage (and i mean proper) yet they wouldnt grant the same rights to Sony? Do not believe it.
IanC @ Mar 30th 2008 11:02AM
Oh and why do I have to install the game to my hard drive to play it, even when ive bought it on disc? Guess Polyphony couldnt be arsed to make the disc based version run straght from the disc, eh?
Popfrogs @ Mar 30th 2008 12:15PM
Couldn't be arsed? Ask Capcom why every game they make eats a 5GB chunk from your hard drive. It's called "keeping load times down", and if given the option, I'll install it every time.
ShylockHolmes @ Mar 30th 2008 12:05PM
It's only that you suck at driving and you suck at any FPS also.
Oldman_Rage @ Mar 30th 2008 1:52PM
I really wish there was damage (to avoid online bumper cars)and I believe when GT5 drops sometime early next year that's exactly what we'll see. They have to impliment it to keep the GT series relivent in an age of arcade smash em' ups. For now I just shake my head when I hear these people go on and on about damage and realism. Are these the same gamers that are content when bullet wounds are healed by hiding in a corner. It's a videogame people! If you want to go smash up your car on the track for real go do so... It's not that much fun. The point is NOT to hit the wall.
yakkity @ Mar 30th 2008 4:00PM
I agree with Eugene that for GT to be called a driving sim that (deformation and other factors that deal with cars and driving) SHOULD be taken into account.
@DA
Don't you ever hear of aircraft crashing around the world before? So if a game that is billed as a sim doesn't do what the real world counterparts can do (or happen) then it's not really a sim is it?
Griever92 @ Mar 30th 2008 7:03PM
deformation is the only thing forza holds over GT in my opinion, so if this happens, GT will officially be the best in every aspect!
EvilWalksWithMe @ Mar 31st 2008 12:24AM
I've been playing GT5:P a little over the last few days, and so far I don't really like it. The enviroment textures aren't really what I hoped for, and the in car view can't be moved around to check out more of the cars interior. But they are things that I'm sure they will alter before the final release. However, the real downer for me was the handling physics being as lousey has GT4. To me, it just doesn't feel realistic that way the cars move around sometimes. Mostly during traction loss when a rear wheel drive car just suddenly slides across the track as if it was an understearing AWD car. Ahhh well, nothings perfect I guess. I just hope the handling turns out more like Forza's model, but keeping the amazing car detail etc etc.
A good start for sure though :)
SonofSeth @ Mar 31st 2008 2:41PM
I just played it for few hours and to me handling realy is that good, I mean realistic.
GT4 had the problem where you couldn't spin your car with rear wheel drive even you were driving a 500 HP monster but it's sorted here and they both feel very real when driving.
At first I wasn't very impreses with the cockpit view but once I got to watch someone else drive few races i started to drool at details and dynamic lighting, shadows and all the juicy details.
As for real driving sims, the only realy REAL one I know is "Live for Speed" and that's WITH car deformations (if you crash, even if you drive 40 MPH you will total your car).
