Call of Duty 4 online play is 'monstrously huge'

PS3 Fanboy's 2007 Game of the Year sure is a giant when it comes to online play. How huge is it? "Monstrously huge," according to Call of Duty 4 producer Mark Rubin. Although he was vague about the actual daily count of PSN CoD4 players, we imagine that the exact number shouldn't be too far behind the 1.2-1.3 million players on Xbox Live every day.

He stated that "PS3 numbers are monstrously huge. No other game has come close, either online current, or total unique users in a day." He continues to say that this trend has been carrying on for the past couple of month, seven days a week. Since Mr. Rubin can't provide a number for us, we'll have to start tallying for ourselves. How many of you are feeding the monster?

I've never liked COD games, so I've stayed away from it.
I'll wait for Socom. Even if Socom has 1/3 the amount of players as COD, it's still enough to always have games to play.

CoD4 is a great game, but the online broken. The lag is horrible, matchmaking is a joke, lobby system is bad. Infinity Ward is a terrible company. They take back their words, and are currently neglecting cod4 ps3 players. The recent patch was suppose to fix common problems, but didn't. It was suppose to provide HOST MIGRATION, but doesn't; it does on the cr@pbox3fixme version though. The matchmaking was suppose to group you with a host closer to your regional location, it doesn't. Why must I be grouped together with some European player?! I don't want the Laaa....ag. It was suppose to do a lot of things, but it didn't. They even made the new maps a 21 day exclusive for cr@pbox3fixme. If you want to know more, go to the official infinity ward ps3 forums. I'm tired of their lies and excuses.

To reiterate, cod4 is a great game, but has bad support.

I've never had any of those problems, and I play about 4 hours a day since I bought it. Also, I play all my multiplatform games on PS3 since I'm a huge Sony fan, and I still find your "cr@pbox3fixme" lame and idiotic.

In summary, I think you are a douche who needs to learn to stop complaining and enjoy your games.

Lag use to be bad for me when I first played it. It depends on your router. I upgraded to a WRT-100 by Linksys and enabled QoS and I make my PS3's IP the DMZ. I experience no lag what-so-ever now.

My only frustrating complaint is how the host can end the game early before the game even gets underway. Especially if it ends in a loss. Activision really should do something to penalize the host for doing this. It's getting really ridiculous and more frequent lately.

Did any of you get play the same game I played BEFORE January 9th. The day the so called playlist/patch was released? I bought the game the first day it came out. Call me a douche, I don't care, but when the majority of people complain about the same thing, then it isn't a lie. There hasn't been a single reply to the PS3 CoD4 community about the problems. In fact, they don't even acknowledge the problems. You say you don't have any problems, but that's what you want to believe. When I played before Jan 9, m16+stopping power took out anyone with 1 single burst shot. Now I have to shoot several. The lag is mostly because of people with crappy connections downloading pr0n or people overseas. The latency is too high, therefore it needs more network hops. Go look it up if you have to.

but anyways IW sux and the online is broken for a lot of people, just check their own forums. Me personally i had the damn Downloading Game Settings for about 2 months, till i learned DeamonWare was forwarding itself on my router. COD4 was fun at first but now it sux.

Seems if the PS3 numbers actually were good, they would share them, just as they shared the (very good) Xbox numbers. And while he is almost certainly right, how would the Infinity Ward producer know the usage numbers of other games when he says "no other game has come close"?

COD4 is pretty much all I play online; I just got Warhawk off PSN and I really enjoy that, and once in a while I'll throw in Dynasty Warriors 6 to try and get top Rampage scores.

Remember for COD4 that If you see matahtak in the game, it's probably only for a quick second before you die. See you all in the suck ;)

Man, if only statements like this were true I'd be playing on the Xbox also. With their ghetto build/design quality and the ridiculous idea of paying for an online service, plus overpriced peripherals (hard drive, wifi), lack of a next-gen movie player, etc. I could never convince myself to buy one.

Except for the fact the 360 has the highest failure rate (My brother turned his in 3 times.)

You tip the 360 over and it scratches the game to shit. (See BluRay Discs have non scratch technology.)

And every "awesome" game for the 360 is just a regular FPS with perked up graphics, with so called "remarkable" gameplay and all the 360 fanboys jump around it saying the PS3 has no exclusives. Humbug, there are more exclusives on the PS3 this year than on the 360.

I rented COD4, and thought the multiplayer OWNED the single player portion of the game..that's probably why the numbers are so high.

I just wish we PSN users had a official server to play on, half of the united states peoples home broadband connection is not meant for hosting game servers, unless you have Fios or OOL.

I'll probably end up buying COD4 used this Thursday for my ps3.

Also, I have been noticing some bullet lag as of late. And host migration isn't happening, which sucks. Other than that though, this is the only game I play online, and I probably play it more than all of my other games combined.

same as many, it's the only online game I'm playing right now. and it's my first ps3 game. and I bought the game a week before I bought my ps3. And it made me bought ps3 a few months too early. I want that MGS4 limited edition PS3!!!!!! :~

LOL how many prestiges have you been through already? I know all about the COD4 sickness where you play for a few hours, and when you stop and turn it off, you close your eyes and recall moments where you snuck up on that damn sniper and knifed him in the butt, or tossed a nade into a campground and got 4 kills, or hid out on Crash and held down "C" in Domination.

haven't got prestige yet. I'm leveling up quite slow. at rank 45 now. planing to prestige when i got there. :D
I will usually remember the funny moment. one is that when i'm surrounded by enemies and just got the airstrike. without thinking i went call an airstrike on my position. bomb! i'm dead and it misses all the target but me. kakakaka. another one is when i throw a frag to the second floor it hit that guy head and bounce back to me. bomb~ i'm dead. lol!!

i just got it like 3 weeks ago though, and haven't played online that much until recently. Had a few midterms and couldn't find the time for my PS3 :((

but now I'm getting into it and have been on for the past like 5 days. I play Warhawk quite a bit too, but I'm already decent at Warhawk and now I'm trying to get even better than noob status at CoD4.

Any tips?

just keep doing it. you'll get better. I suggest you keep with the m16 with dotred and stoping power perk until you get the hang of the game or some new weapon. it's the greatest gun you can get for now. it's quite accurate. even it only fire a 3 round burst but with stoping power it actually take a men down in 1-2 bullets. but don't use that thing during close combat. there is where the 3 round burst sucks. mp5 is the gun to go for in close combat. and try to stick with at least 1 teammate. good luck!

Snake is 100% right. M16 is frustrating in close combat but the MP5 or Uzi takes care of that problem, equip either with stopping power. Also if you want to level up faster, play high scoring matches like Domination or Headquarters. HQ is tough if your team sucks but if your team takes the HQ, even if you're dead you get +5 experience every few seconds while you guys own the HQ.

Also my favorite perk for Domination and Headquarters is extreme conditioning. Carry a light weapon (mp5 silenced or red dot) and you can sprint for miles to the hq or to the next flag. Focus on the objective in these modes, worry less about camping and shooting people and you will lead your team to a win. Most people that suck at those modes suck because they treat it like deathmatch. It's not about the kills, it's about holding on to the HQ or the flags.

I've been playing it quite regularly as of the last two or three weeks. It is too bad that the PS3 version gets updates and stuff later than the 360, but at least we get them... I guess.

I feed the monster everyday for a few hours. The only issue I have is the host ending the game....but that's hardly even an issue when I'm able to hop on a new game in ten seconds. Maybe IW can provide a patch to allow players to see who the host actually is. This way, if its me, I would know not to leave the game early.

I just got done with a 4 hour stint of playing it last night til 2 in the morning.

And by the way, I have only had lag in one game that I have played. So I dunno what this lag shit is about.

i have had lag, but mainly in ground war.
headquarters on bog and shipment.
and if the host is in a different country, but that's about it.

i got high speed internet allready.
