Hideo Kojima wants, needs Snake to die
Hideo Kojima is adamant about making Metal Gear Solid 4 the last real MGS game he'll direct. "I really don't want to say that this the final game or this is the wrap up," he told IGN. "But if I don't say it, people will make me create MGS again!" While we don't think the fans would mind, it's clear that Kojima wants to work on new things. "So I have to say, 'Die, Snake,' and really end it so I can move on to something else!"
Of course, there's life after Snake. "Actually, it's a game, so even if Snake dies, the game can live on." In fact, the Metal Gear franchise may continue its life as anything but a game. "Maybe it'll be a novel or a comic – I do have some ideas." Don't expect Kojima to be hands-on with the process, though. "However, I have to say that I'm not going to do everything if we were to create it. Maybe I'll just produce or maybe design the game and just act on that role, so I won't be the total creator of that series if it happens."

If Snake dies in MGS4 it will be the saddest scene in the history of video games. Nay, in the history of media.
Mein Bratwurst @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:05AM
I had a feeling he was going to die in MGS4, Kojima saying what he did makes me really think he's going to bite the dust.
It will definitely be a sad day for me :(.
Dahk @ Apr 3rd 2008 9:16AM
I think it'll be the first time I cry during a game/movie =(.
... and I'm not even joking lol.
Popfrogs @ Apr 3rd 2008 10:15AM
I'm a grown man and if Snake dies....it's like a big chunk of my gaming life dies with it. I just might cry.
Mein Bratwurst @ Apr 3rd 2008 3:01PM
I must admit, I got a lump in my throat and my eyes watered up at the end of MGS3 (the graveyard scene). Powerful moment.
KarlW @ Apr 4th 2008 8:00AM
In the trailers, his face is already decaying (clone, rapid ageing), and he sticks a gun in his mouth.
At least make it a good death - no suicide. That just doesn't fit snake.
Will @ Apr 6th 2008 4:21PM
Wow, I totally didn't see this coming. Snake should go hang himself because his games suck.
Roto13 @ Apr 6th 2008 4:28PM
You're an idiot
/end transmission
Flicky @ Apr 2nd 2008 9:29PM
Ya know someone (cough...Sony...cough) is going to bleed this franchise for all it's worth. Metal Gear beer coozy, anyone ?
Andrew Yoon @ Apr 2nd 2008 9:49PM
But Sony doesn't make Metal Gear...
Flicky @ Apr 2nd 2008 9:55PM
True, Metal Gear is Konami's but don't ya think Sony has quite a fair bit of say on the direction and marketing of the franchise ?
Mein Bratwurst @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:03AM
Sony has nothing to do with Konami. MGS is Konami's property. Next..
Dartmerc @ Apr 3rd 2008 6:19AM
But hell yeah, an MGS stubby holder would be awesome!
dannyboyxtm @ Apr 2nd 2008 9:41PM
whatt thee helll I dont care, I love snake way too much to see him die, what am I going to do after I beat MGS4?!?! I think my world would be filled with depression for a very long time. Im sorry if im being selfish, but think of the game and gamers. THE best game ever created is going to die, well I mean the best main character, what is going to happen next, play as Raiden? wack. If snake dies, I think a part of everyone who plays this game would die... it saddens me, I wish i could go and slap him and really know how everyone feels! ='[
FourZeroSeven @ Apr 2nd 2008 10:03PM
R.I.P Snake? :(
lord_monkey @ Apr 2nd 2008 10:13PM
what is there's another clone .. in MGS3 you play as Big Boss (the original ) maybe there's another clone of snake or maybe BIG BOSS !!!
What Do You think ?
Autopsy15 @ Apr 2nd 2008 10:13PM
I'd say 6 games is a good run for a character...now that Mario fella, he's overdue for a death scene.
adamevex @ Apr 3rd 2008 1:35PM
LMAO!! That's the best comment i've seen today.
On topic: I wouldn't mind seeing snake die. I mean i think Kojima is very brave for actually trying to fight the temptation of recycling a franchise every so often for a fast buck. Now only if a couple of devs with crappy games would follow suit.
Solid_Snake @ Apr 2nd 2008 10:28PM
how about the next Metal Gear series focuses on ... Gray Fox ????? come on, do you know how awesome thatll be??? they can even do a prequel to Metal Gear Solid and going through what happened to him after the nintendo version of Metal Gear.. Hideo Kojima should hire me, I have the goods to continue the saga :-) .. but seriously, GRAY FOX!!!
Toby @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:38AM
After i beat MGS4, i can die a happy man
B-way @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:02PM
Gray Fox was a total badass. Anyone who saw him in Portable Ops knows he didn't even NEED the Ninja suit unlike Raiden and Olga, he just WAS one.
Skyfire360 @ Apr 2nd 2008 10:39PM
Didn't he say this after MGS2?
Didn't he say this after MGS3?
Isn't he saying this about MGS4?
Dahk @ Apr 3rd 2008 9:14AM
Lol that snake needs to die? or that the game is ending? =P
But yeah, he did say the game was ending before. But people kept pushing him because the "story" wasn't finished.
This story was technically BUILT from the start to end the final part. If it concludes as well as everyone says it will, then I believe Kojima when he says this is really the last one. Besides, I think the man's geniusism is gonna start dwindling after this one.
hey_big_dck psn:fuliano626 @ Apr 2nd 2008 10:41PM
he can die konami will just mak prequels solid snake during the gold rush anyone?
Joe @ Apr 2nd 2008 10:42PM
I fully understand Kojima, he wants to make different things, and there's no way he can unless Snake dies.
held225 @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:15PM
Or maybe a sequel after MGS1 were you get to play as Meryl Silverburgh !!! now that would be nice.
_sean_ @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:20PM
Metal Gear: The Anime
believe
sicklesdawg @ Apr 3rd 2008 4:40PM
FAP...fap...fap
TinyTim121 @ Apr 3rd 2008 11:58AM
Hmmm… I agree it will be a wrap up and its last game ect. But they won't kill off Snake, unless it’s some really heroic thing. I reckon Hideo Kojima is just rallying up the fan base so to speak, I mean why would you give away a twist like that?
**HALF LIFE 2: EPISODE 2 SPOILER**
Valve didn’t do that in Half Life 2 Episode 2 with the Eli Vance death. That was totally unexpected, and I was…still am completely shocked by the ending. I wanted to know about G-man damn it! lol
Victor @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:40AM
I say make a game with Big Boss between Portable Ops and Metal Gear 1 in the PS3. After playing MGS 3 and Portable Ops, I like Big Boss more than Solid Snake to be honest. flame me =p
Brodie-san @ Apr 3rd 2008 2:34AM
So dead.
mccomber @ Apr 3rd 2008 3:47AM
After Halo3 "finished the fight" the way it did, I'd be happy to see a main character we have an attachment to actually die.
Knowing Kojima, the end of this story will be one we talk about in future "gaming moments we remember" articles, and I'd rather see that than some cheesy frozen in space BS.
jtedesco33 @ Apr 3rd 2008 11:57AM
That fight isn't finished the only fight finished with Halo is Bungie making it. MS will move someone new in to make the other games just as someone diffrent is making Halo Wars. Same type of crap will happen with MGS, whether it has a so called good ending to you or not. Sony needs MGS and GT they will never let those games stop coming out.
Darko @ Apr 3rd 2008 7:15AM
See, even he hates this game.
jtedesco33 @ Apr 3rd 2008 8:53AM
There will be more Metal Gear games just not with snake and not made by Kojima. Sony needs these games as exclusives and Konami needs them to be relevant in the market share. I look for tons of spinoffs to hit PSP and Playstations for years to come.
Geeky @ Apr 3rd 2008 9:06AM
They could always make Meryl the new main protagonist.
James @ Apr 3rd 2008 10:02AM
I'd say they need to flesh out the Metal Gear "universe" a bit more -- I always like the storylines, and a lot of the characters too. They can explore variations on the gameplay genre without changing the setting too much. Maybe they can make a Gears-style action shooter starring Colonel Campbell back in his Army days, or a combat-light intrigue/adventure game starring Otacon post-MGS2 (I'd make that a day-one purchase -- Otacon rocks). They've already done Acid, which is a pretty damn good game in its own right (though I got a bit bored about 3/4 of the way into the story), so they've shown a willingness to explore other genres.
I'd love to see MGS become an "open world" franchise, like what Square is doing with FFVII and the Ivalice series, or the way Lucasarts has handled the Star Wars IP over the years. Keep the backstory and characters we're familiar with while painting a broader picture of the MGS universe.
Byron517 @ Apr 3rd 2008 11:57AM
Ok I think I'm going to get flamed for this but I honestly feel that Snake will never die.. I do however strongly feel that in MGS4 snake is doing to APPEAR to be killed/died ect but it will be open for another game. I do understand that Hideo wants to do something else *I would love to see another Zone of Enders!* but I think his love for MGS is too strong.. I read another article a while back during the whole MGS3 time frame where he admited that he was selfish that he wanted to finish what he started and he didn't want anyone else doing Metal Gears.. I think the DAY that HIDEO retires will be the day that we have no more Snake but till then its like a soap opra its going to go back and forth and I think he says these things to also spur up attention and its a great PR ploy if you ask me.
Hideo is one of the greatest if not the GREATEST developer of all time and for him to want to finish what he starts as much as we all would hate it have to respect him.. So fuck it if Snake does die so be it as long as he goes out like a CHAMP taking 10 bad dudes with him!!! BRING IT!! I can't wait for June 12th!!
Dahk @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:02PM
Actually I just realized... Snake was at a cemetary when the helicopter arrived.
Maybe they'll use that existing environment... for Snakes cemetary o.0.
Ahhhh I want to cry just thinking about it.
Dahk @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:04PM
10? Snake isn't worth any less than 9000 doods.
Although if he took Liquid Ocelot with him, that would satisfyingly account for like... 8000 of them.
ComicShaman @ Apr 3rd 2008 1:06PM
This is my prediction, and it's based on nothing more than just an intuitive guess. I think Snake will die somewhere around the middle of the game, and then you will pick up playing another character to get you to the end. Snake passes the baton to someone else.
It seems like it would be such a downer to end the game with Snake eating a bullet, as the trailers all seem to suggest. Kojima loves to keep his best cards hidden until the release of a game, and I think that's what we'll see this time.
If I'm right, I hope he has more success than he did in creating the somewhat dubious Raiden.
NukeAssault @ Apr 3rd 2008 2:19PM
He better die in this.
EcnobA @ Apr 3rd 2008 7:58PM
this game will be something to remember for the rest of your life.
i think that there is going to be an open ending. or there is going to be very weird ending like akiras' ending
also there is something fishy about the guy with the mask and glasses that is with the fox hunt 2.
i will not be surprise if he will kill other characters like raiden, cambel, otacon and meril.
faza @ Apr 12th 2008 7:33PM
ecnoba i think he is raiden cause hes got the blonde hair and when the nanites where attacking he was the only 1 not to go crazy like in the trailer
kentuckyfried @ Apr 3rd 2008 11:44PM
I'm guessing Snake's going to pull a Harry Potter...
As for MGS, I don't that this is "the End." Maybe in the current sense of this particular Snake, but not of the franchise at all. There's still so much that can be done with it.
Even if Kojima leaves, it's still a TEAM effort. Kojima is original visionary, but that doesn't mean the story can't successfully move on without him.
