Red Faction devs find PS3 potentially more powerful than competition

As for the needless comparison between 360 and PS3 versions, Carroll said "We've got the PS3 running at a similar frame rate to the 360. We're finding some of the challenges of the PS3 beneficial. We feel like we're doing rather well with the PS3." He goes into some specific benefits the PS3 brings to the table, like the increase in running speed once they moved animations and physics from the CPUs onto the SPUs. Potentially, Carroll said, the PS3 will push out better graphics than the 360. Since he says this game is pushing the PS3, maybe we'll see results that support his claim!

Well duh. At least that should keep 360 fanny boy's mouths' shut

Doubtful, but we can dare to dream...

Come on you should know better by now!! They'll totally discount this claim and twist his words...
I already know the PS3 is better... just play both and you will too. Only a 360fanboy will Bill Gates cock in hand would claim differently

Mr. Short, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Key word of the day:
"Potentially"
Hashbrown Hunter @ Apr 7th 2008 3:06PM
Nice catch!
See, I do believe the PS3 is built for a more longterm life, and probably more powerful, but if devs can't unleash the PS3 at its maximum strength then it will all go to waste.
Then again, I'm confident at least one developer will fully unleash the power of the system. The closest to the full power of the system I've seen so far is probably MGS4.

"Potentially"... that's what rubs me wrong. The system's been out for a year and half; the dev kits were available a while before that. And we're still seeing posts like this?
What good is a system if nobody can code for it? I'm not a developer by any means, but if studios are making comments like, "the system has potential if we can figure it out" after 18 months since the system launch, that stinks.
In the mean time, I will endure the horrible ports of Orange Box or Lost Planet... but I really hope the tide will turn real soon.

The grass is blue. The grass is blue. The grass is blue. The grass is blue. The grass is blue. The grass is blue. The grass is blue. The grass is blue. The grass is blue.
Ok, that was stated over and over. Is it true?

The comments in here are just giving me a headache from the facepalms. Seriously how old are most of you?
Ninjakamster @ Apr 7th 2008 3:06PM
Oh please deafly, as if 360 fanboys are any better, they are just as annoying. You guys act as if only Sony fanboys can be annoying and whiny, yeah right.

I think deaftly has a point. Judging by the grammar and punctuation used in this comment section, I would say the average age is 13.
Only fanboys and trolls will respond.

Thomas @ Apr 7th 2008 3:01PM
I'm so tired of hearing devs talking about PS3 potential power.. show it! I'm ready for some games that on par with MGS4. MGS4 is what a 60 dollar PS3 game SHOULD be. Volition wants us to buy their game so that's why they're shooting out compliments to the PS3 fanbase. They know the power is there... so why not tap into the power of the PS3 and make the PS3 version a true PS3 version; instead of just "the 360 game now on PS3" versions we've been receiving.
Popfrogs @ Apr 7th 2008 3:46PM
Seriously? Hidden strength takes time to unlock. Dev tools have to grow and expand in sophistication, middleware companies (like Havok) will build even better SPE-specific code, etc. etc. At this point only Krazy Ken knows what it might be capable of but we won't see its full potential for years. Look at the PS1 and PS2, same exact story over and over. GoW2 would have been unbelievable as a first-gen PS2 game compared to everything else.
Byron517 @ Apr 7th 2008 3:57PM
I agree with you Thomas your right.. it all comes down to the devs and how much effort they are willing to put.. its saddens me but now everyone is out to make a quick buck.. there's few companies out there that will actually put "effort" into their project.. companies like Naughty Dog, Insomnaic and Kojima Productions.. these companies will create great games every time.. oh well.. hopefully
JayD-1K @ Apr 7th 2008 8:02PM
what i find funny is, how every body thinks that devs know how to find all the quick tricks and the details on how to bring these things out in the hardware! they are using BRAND NEW tech. this is not the 360 with old PS2 tech with just more power!
and the fact that 360 only owners throw up such a fuss when, anybody says that the PS3 can do any thing better than the 360! (talking about the uproar about the GTA preview) i mean WOW! and they had the nerve to talk about the PS3 crowed!
Devin @ Apr 7th 2008 3:54PM
If the PS3 is like the PS2 then we will see continual improvements on the graphics as the tools and understanding improve.....and like everyone has said: if there is this "potential power" over the 360 then don't talk about it, USE IT to make a me Want to buy the game instead of making me feel like it's just a 360 game turned PS3 game and then you will be rewarded on both sides of the fence
Sauvage @ Apr 7th 2008 4:05PM
The boundary pushing games will come, but it will NOT happen overnight. I think not until about 2009/10 will we truely see what the PS3 is capable of. MGS4 will only be a glimpse of what is possible.
John @ Apr 7th 2008 4:06PM
We just need to ship the PS3 off to Namek to see the Guru.
And, I'm done talking now.

nillaP @ Apr 7th 2008 6:19PM
everyone knows that the ps3 is capable of producing a better experience than the 360, but sonys real problem is to get more ps3 only releases. just imagine if they still had the rights to gta
Nate @ Apr 7th 2008 7:35PM
After reading these comments, it's kinda sad. So many games these days take years upon years, so have at least a little patience. People can code for an xbox360 so well because dev kits were basically identical to coding on a pc. so ps3 is different, and say they figured out how to use a ps3 as soon as it came out. Then figure that it takes two or three years to get out a good game (Hasn't haze been in dev for three years? poped into my head, but I'm not sure... but you can look at ff13... in dev long enough to originally be planned for the ps2). so give it another year to get out some games that use a little more of the ps3.

Ok let me clarify something here, to clean up any argument oin whos is better.
The two systems have the same amount of ram but use it differently.
The PS3 uses two lots of 256 mb of ram, one lot for the GPU and the other for the CPU. Hence this is why, due to the smaller numbers, that the PS3 is seen as inferior in its graphics, the truth is they both have their faults and pros.
Now lets talk about how the PS3 uses the bandwidth since this is very important. With the PS3 you have two pipe lines, one that travels to/from the GPU's ram to the GPU and another from the CPU's Ram to the CPU.
However if w look at the 360's GPU and Ram. Developers can allocate whatever ram they want for certain GPU needs and then use the rest for other CPU stuff, or change between the two when needed. However the downside with this system is you just have just one pool of 512 ram, so developers have got a smaller bandwidth area. With one line coming into the pool for both the CPU and GPU you can't access info any faster that the bandwidth of the lines that provide access to the pool of ram.
Thus while developers have the same amount of ram, they're accessed very differently. The difficulties or as it stands the current fanboys arguement... is when it comes to devs using the 360 as the lead development console for the game and get used to allocating whatever they want for CPU or GPU and then using what ever is left over for the other component to deal with. However when they port it over for the PS3 they are forced with 256 for each and hence it usually comes out worse. So, it's not fair to say either is worse... it's not as clear cut as that, its how programmers must thinking about both consoles and allocating the resources to be handled differently. Obviosuly they have not been using the PS3 as the lead platform but now with new developments kits and more experience with the PS3. Hopefully we will see improvements in the near future.
So what I presume they are doing now is programming the animations first and the storing it on the CPU, leaving them free to use the GPU again. I think thats what they are saying but im not too sure on that.
I love Red Fraction, well the first one anyway, its destructible scenary was way ahead of anything then (probably still to this day). Im not sure about third person change but we'll see.
Anyway hope thats helps clarify the graphical side of things.
BowserUSC @ Apr 8th 2008 8:29PM
First off I'd like to say I own both systems but tend to side with the 360 more often.
Second, does anyone not accept this as truth already? Of course the PS3 is more powerful than the wii or 360. The reasons PS3 graphics aren't dominating is just because developers still need to learn how to use the PS3 properly. Honestly, I think everyone has admitted this already and as time goes by PS3 graphics will get better and better.
However think about this for a minute. The PS3 is supposed to have a 10 year lifespan. Do you really think the wii or 360 will be around in 2018, or even 2013? I seriously doubt it. By then I'm sure both MS and Nintendo will have released new consoles. When the xbox 720 (or whatever it will be called) has a 100 core processor and a great GPU to boot, don't you think that most people will think the PS3 is outdated and wont have as good graphics.
All I'm saying is that the PS3 was released a long time after the 360 and it's powerPC architecture (i mean come on, apple doesn't even use it anymore). Of course it is going to be more advanced. And when the PS3 is nearing the end of it's lifespan, whatever MS decides to release will obviously be technologically superior.
You people are so entrenched in your fanboyism, that you think a 2 year gap in release dates will have no impact on technological capabilities.
JayD-1K @ Apr 9th 2008 3:11AM
i have both as well but, i tend to lean towards the PS3. i think, some people are like me and don't find the prospect of buying a new console every 5 years a good thing. if i can get 10 years from the PS3 all the bette, i mean.....hell i just retired my PS1 when i got the PS3!
