I believe it's all the echoing sound waves of the ring that make Sonic go mad and turn evil. Still not a bad idea to make it official official!

I don't think that was Sonic, maybe thats a hint at the main antagonist.
Or it could be yet another ST, which making Sonic bigger and furrier, but it still does not strike me as Sonic.
