Gran Turismo 5 Prologue launches with heavy patch
Those who are rushing to play Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will have to shift gears when launching the game today. After yet another lengthy install, we found ourselves stopped by a required update. The patch is rather heavy, weighing in at around approximately 300-400MB. Do what you did with Devil May Cry 4: grab a sandwich.
There are tweaks throughout almost every aspect of the game, from online play, to rankings, to the single player events. The game does warn you that some of your save data may be affected by the update -- thankfully, for US players, this will be a rather moot point.
For a list of all the updates, check after the cut. Also, check out new images from our updated gallery.
Online play
- The award of race credits are now allocated at a fixed rate regardless of the number of race participants.
- The High Speed Ring course diagram has been fixed.
- Some online ID's were appearing in grey in the entry list, this has been amended.
- Some online opponents appeared to "blur", this has been amended.
Rankings
- Country and area information now appears next to the online ID in the ranking boards.
- Unusually high scores had been recorded in some Drift Trials, this has been rectified.
- When Drift Trial replays were saved, occasionally these appeared in the "Load as Ghost" option of Time Trials.
This has now been rectified.
Performance Points (PP)
- The method of calculating Performance Points has been revised, to balance vehicles in events with PP upper limits.
Miscellaneous
- LCD display has been added in the F2007 interior view.
- Some interiors and exteriors of some vehicle models have been revised.
- On occasion the Quick Tune gear ratio became impossible to reset in some cars, this has been amended.
- The manual has been updated.
Caution
- The button assignments will be reset when the update is applied.
- In line with the application of the update, all ranking data will also be reset.
[Thanks, Colin E.!]

No difference for Euro GT5:P users, mandatory install, and then a update. I don't care however, as I then got the bestr racer ever seen on ANY system, and vritually zero load times. The whole GT5:P experience zips along, something it would have not done, had it been running from disc..
I think people should just get used to mandatory installs, and developers need to get smarter about them....
Dahk @ Apr 15th 2008 6:55PM
Hehe apparently I'm the first person in my city (Markham, ON) to get GT5P. I got to the store right when the boxes arrived hahaha. So awesome.
And on that note, I got MGO BEEEETA!
'Tis a good day to drive.
LJ @ Apr 15th 2008 6:58PM
MGO beta!! so freaking jealous!!! i hope you die - not really - but i want a key!!
TheMan726 @ Apr 15th 2008 7:08PM
NO FREAKING WAY!!! I live in Ontario too!!! Small world.
Haiddasalami @ Apr 15th 2008 7:22PM
Which EB at Markham cause i was there and when I came in they just got GT5P. I was going to buy it, but my credit was maxed due to my new pc build.
Dahk @ Apr 15th 2008 7:37PM
Dohp faulty comment system. Reply down there =P.
BrokenMonkey @ Apr 15th 2008 9:14PM
I went to 2 stores today and check with 3 more, none of them had gotten GT5 in stock, what gives?
Inect @ Apr 15th 2008 9:34PM
Markham ftw
LJ @ Apr 15th 2008 6:56PM
This makes me so mad! if the DEMO was not worth it... i would be exploding right now.
I know that no game is perfect, but 400MB after installing! some of us do not have 2Mbps connections... the BD is freaking pointless! GOD!
Popfrogs @ Apr 15th 2008 8:09PM
If this patch applies to the downloadable, that's retarded. They should just patch whatever they're distributing on the Store and let people download that instead. I guess they didn't want it to go through Sony's long (yet effective) QA process for stuff headed to the Store.
PS3FanxD @ Apr 15th 2008 7:06PM
LJ...this is a patch. The reason why it's not included in the discs is because they did not find these bugs and didn't have the time to update. Even if they have infinite space on the disc they would not be able to put it in, think before you cry out. Remember, this is a demo, and it is something of a beta test for them, hence why they keep giving you updates, which you should be happy getting them. Although I see your point, maybe having it as an optional dl will be better for some with slow connection.
Da @ Apr 15th 2008 7:21PM
It is optional. If your internet isn't fast enough to download these patches or play online, wtf is it connected for?
Disconnect it and enjoy the game. It's not PD's fault LJ has a slow connection.
playcrackthesky @ Apr 15th 2008 7:25PM
The installation will be the least of your worries.
After the initial install Pal users had to endure a downloadable update which on average crashed at least 3 times per person. It took me 5 retrys after failing at over 60% done.
Dont know if you yanks will have trouble with the download, but for your sake...I hope you dont.
Da @ Apr 15th 2008 10:01PM
Odd, because I never had a problem and neither did my two friends who bought it aswell.
I think your making up statistics buddy.
playcrackthesky @ Apr 15th 2008 10:04PM
No mate, here you go.

;)
Khaeos @ Apr 16th 2008 9:17AM
dude u probably just have a crapy connection..the update+install was fine for me...no problems whatsoever..took about half hour to download and install
playcrackthesky @ Apr 16th 2008 7:19PM
Why do i feel as if you having a go at me?
Im just simply stating what happened to me (and many many others). That's all.
Still a lovely game, get it if you dont have it.
Dahk @ Apr 15th 2008 7:36PM
LOL! The one at Markville Mall.
I got there after work from go-train, walked right in and was like, do you guys have GT5 Prologue yet? I preordered it.
Both of them stare blankly, and i'm like uhhhhh.
And I noticed he was carrying an unopened cardboard box with GT5P! HAHA! So good. And then I proceeded to grab the Metal Gear DVD =)
Haiddasalami @ Apr 16th 2008 1:09AM
WEIRD! I was there at the same one...prob looking at some games.
Ash.S @ Apr 15th 2008 7:46PM
Don't worry about the download crashing, as the updater resumes the download the next time you try. However the progress bar will go back to the beginning, so its a little confusing.
playcrackthesky @ Apr 15th 2008 10:08PM
Correct.
Shame they didnt make that more clear.
Patrick @ Apr 15th 2008 8:06PM
I'm not sure where I heard it, but won't GT5:P be available as a download from the Playstation Store? Or do I have my info totally wrong here?
Liquid Ocelot (call me Liquid) @ Apr 15th 2008 7:58PM
Yep, wrong. Available retail and as a download. Retail gets a couple bonuses, but nothing special enough to tip the scale either way.
BrokenMonkey @ Apr 15th 2008 9:15PM
I wonder if the PSN version will already have the patch applied or if there will be two lengthy downloads and installs for PSN buyers.
LJ @ Apr 15th 2008 10:41PM
Its going to be available on the PSN this thursday after the update... and thats exactly my point... the BD is pointless if you need to download a 400MB patch, you might as well wait for the PSN to have the game and download everything without having to go through all the trouble of pre-ordering.
Patrick @ Apr 16th 2008 12:51AM
Thanks for the info, guys. Looks like the only advantage to buying the game at retail is if you want to lend it to someone else. I'll probably download it of PSN...glad I upgraded to a 160 GB hard drive!
Dwag @ Apr 15th 2008 8:05PM
i think this game warrants going the trouble.
Dooditsmiguel @ Apr 15th 2008 9:46PM
Wow, like none of the stores near by have the game in stock
:(
Jove @ Apr 15th 2008 9:48PM
forget about that utopia that you were promised. lifes not perfect. just play the game.
Alexander @ Apr 15th 2008 10:13PM
yea i hate when the update resets my settings eventually i will buy the american version for now my japanese version is fine the F2700 lcd screen is cool only thing is the interior of the japanese version is kmh but i have mph setting on
LJ @ Apr 15th 2008 10:49PM
I know i might be complaining too much. But its hard not feel cheated after all this. I'm already playing the damn thing.. LOVE IT!!!
But God i don't mind the install load times are unnoticeable, on the other hand the patch makes you feel like they rushed the game and didn't go through all the bugs. Sometimes developers do whatever the Hell they want just because they know we all are gonna but the game anyways.
Well... enough complaining! the game is awesome!!!
Andrew Yoon @ Apr 16th 2008 1:02AM
Honestly, if you're torn up between the two versions, I'd say get the retail version. You'll most likely have to patch the game when it comes out on the PS Store (unconfirmed), and the Blu-ray disc features an awesome documentary.
Steve Childs @ Apr 16th 2008 5:15AM
awsome documentary.. yeah, which you yanks can download off the US store. Us Europeans don't have the video, no matter which version we buy.
Talking of which, DON'T buy the PSN version if you want to play the game offline at any time, nor if you want to share it with another account on the same PS3 - it won't work. Its locked to the PSN account its downloaded from and you can't share it with another account on the PS3.
Get the BluRay version.
aMIGA_dUDE @ Apr 16th 2008 3:30AM
This documentary is no "Top Gear". Sorry the video's are boring, it been edited by someone who created video that is better then any sleeping pill.
Now when "Top Gear" video's come on this GT-TV they will be worth watching. At least it would put me to sleep.
Now it late, I know what GT-TV Video.
aMIGA_dUDE @ Apr 16th 2008 3:30AM
The big problem with this game updates i trying to download it if you can. I taken 12 times to download it until I was able to what happends is it keeps stopping download the update. When that this happens you have start download again from the beginning. It will drive you nuts, unless you are one few who download first time without a problem.
SORT IT OUT!
S2 @ Apr 16th 2008 8:35AM
The only interior change I have noticed is the Citroen C4 steering wheel is fixed in the middle. And the F2007 too.
Not sure about exteriors though. I thought the R8 might have running lights, but nope.. Im from UK by the way..
xXx
Kenneth @ Apr 16th 2008 1:42PM
Did anyone pre-order the game on Amazon.com?
I did and just received an email from Amazon. They gave me a new ETA:
"Gran Turismo: 5 Prologue" [Video Game]
Estimated arrival date: 04/22/2008 - 04/23/2008
I may end up canceling it and grab a copy from BestBuy or whatever.
Kiteless @ Apr 16th 2008 3:33PM
Eh, sorry for the double post. But this is why I never ever bother with pre-ordering a game. Most of the time you get stuffed. Just call around. Worse case is that you can't get it right away. Hardware is another story. Good luck.

Kiteless @ Apr 16th 2008 3:28PM
Woohoo, just picked up a copy from Wal-Mart. Not a big fan of Wal-Mart, but they have it and no one else does just now. Can't wait to get home and get that download started.
Greg @ Jul 13th 2008 9:41PM
I never had a 400MB update for GT5P
