Lengthy patch download haunts Metal Gear Online
After successfully downloading the Metal Gear Online beta, we recommend launching the game as soon as possible. Yes, online play won't go live until Monday, but there's a significant patch that you'll have to download before the beta's start. If you wait until Monday, you'll waste precious time that could be used fragging other beta participants.
There are two delivery options, one which involves peer-to-peer connections, a la BitTorrent. Unfortunately, the hours-long download cannot be background downloaded. PS3 is certainly encouraging a lot more sandwich eating, no?
[Thanks, Eric!]

I guess I was one of the lucky ones who got to it when the HTTP download was still available.
PSU_Boss @ Apr 17th 2008 8:46AM
Hmm, what time did you download it? I think it was around 12:00 AM EST when i tried, and the HTTP didn't work. Anyway, I downloaded via P2P at between 200 and 300 KB/s on average, so it didn't take too, too long.
Thanks for using the tip i sent in!
strike911 @ Apr 17th 2008 5:45AM
Took about 3 hours for me... it bounced between 170KB/s and 25KB/s...
And then you have to install... which is a mere 2 minutes.
But hey, now if I could get id.konami.net to work, I'd be set. lol. haha.
aMIGA_dUDE @ Apr 17th 2008 5:54AM
I am sorry to say this but it konami own fault. The could use PSN, they wouldn't be this problem.
There are no contact phone numbers for Konami ID unlike PSN has.
So they have ZERO chance of me parting with cash on Konami ID that is a waste of time. I buy MGS 4 but I will spend any money on MGO unless it thought PSN as konami are a joke of an outfit. Not even monster that is EA doesn't do this. EA thinks PSN is up to job for user ID and payment system.
I have verious site and no-one is happy with this Konami ID CR@P.
Da @ Apr 17th 2008 6:40AM
Well buddy, paying money for MGS4 is the same as paying money for MGO.. so you're already giving Konami (a great company) your money. At least I won't have to bump into idiots like youself when I jump online. Thanks for saving me that trouble mate.
aMIGA_dUDE @ Apr 17th 2008 8:29AM
You are so funny,
I will not say not Fanboy of Konami as it more likely MGS.
Konami (a great company)
1) Konami wants to use there own user ID service.
No point PSN would do.
2) Konami wants to use users to have 2 ID's to use there service.
No point PSN would do.
3) Konami wants to pay for contect with Konami ID.
No point PSN would do.
4) Totally understate the interest in get with there web site. Well it down for days.
They have made comments in the past they expect the game sell millions of copy's. Doh.
5) The website has problems in understanding birth dates and ages.
6) Pre-Order codes in USA are wrong by being 9 digits and not 12.
7) MGO demo hasn't even started to active and there update, correction Very Large Update.
They couldn't get own web site to work. It silly and pointless system called Konami ID. If want to give them you money for MGO thats your look out.
As for buy MGS4 and get MGO. You do not, you only have MGO Starter pack with MGS4. If wanted the full MGO you will have pay using Konami ID, which is fast becoming a JOKE !!!!!!
Trev @ Apr 17th 2008 10:10AM
Wrong. The MGO that comes with MGS4 is the whole thing.

Dahk @ Apr 17th 2008 10:13AM
Actually Amiga, the MGO "Starter Pack" is the FULL GAME. It's only called starter pack, because there's going to be downloadable content later on (just like every other game now). It's still the full game, and it's not Konami screwing over their customers.
And... I'm fully giving their money as most everyone here. This is a FRIGGIN' BETA. It should be expected that there is going to be bugs and stuff. A large part of what all betas are for, is experimenting with traffic and volume. That's why games have stress tests and open betas.
Da @ Apr 17th 2008 6:28PM
Amega Dude, do you understand this is a beta not a demo? It's a privilege not a right to have access to this.
Do you work for sony developing the PSN?
Do you work for Konami developing Konami ID?
Then how do you know PSN would cut it? I'm going to guess that beta user data will be sent to Konami to give them some feedback on their product in development (which is the point of the beta), and I'm sure it's far easier for that information to be sent through Konami's own system then through Sony's.
And I'm more of a Kojima fanboy then a MGS fanboy too.
New topic, if I've been able to play MPO online, does that mean I've already been through the Konami ID sign up? It's been so long and I can't remember.
LJ @ Apr 17th 2008 10:57PM
@ Amiga_dude
I dont know if it was coz i could not understand half of what you said... but you are very misinformed. This a FREE beta its buggy and it has its problems. That's the whole idea behind releasing a beta.. getting feedback to fix all the bugs... At least they are not making you pay 40.00 like GT5 (which btw imo, is worth it).
Johnny Kielbasa @ Apr 18th 2008 11:01PM
I like Konami too, but let's be honest. They're screwing the pooch so far. By Monday, hopefully everything will be golden. I'm sure they are aware of the issues and will address them promptly. Remember that they're doing this for the sake of the game, not to kiss up to us.
steven182 @ Apr 17th 2008 5:48AM

Khaeos @ Apr 17th 2008 5:46AM

Khaeos @ Apr 17th 2008 8:37AM

Lunitsond @ Apr 17th 2008 5:48AM
You shouldn't all feel so bad. My Gamestop download code doesn't work at all. I don't know what the problem is. I am going to E-Mail Konami today though.
Shinogu @ Apr 17th 2008 5:54AM
If your beta code isn't 12 digits, then you hafta e-mail Konami on the address provided on the code voucher.
Bobloblaw @ Apr 17th 2008 5:49AM
Was the beta restricted to certain countries only or randomly picked?
SUPER DESU @ Apr 17th 2008 5:54AM
I wish the European arm of the Playstation store would get their arse in gear.
The store still hasn't been updated, and I want me some MGO and Warhawk expansion.
*shakes fist*
Khaeos @ Apr 17th 2008 5:58AM
damn it..im pissed off....gnna run downstairs and check it again :s
Khaeos @ Apr 17th 2008 6:06AM
ITS HERE! EUROPEAN UPDATE IS LIVE! looks like they wait till noon to update the store.
Marcus Olsson @ Apr 17th 2008 6:09AM
About the European beta, it will be added on the PSN Store at 12:00 CEST (Central European Summer Time), which means about... Now... So it should appear any minute now I guess.
Jove @ Apr 17th 2008 6:40AM

UnrealPirate @ Apr 17th 2008 6:58AM
hehe woops... I ofcause ment LIVE!!
Ves @ Apr 17th 2008 6:06PM
The Konami ID site is havig it heavy. Can't even load for a bunch of people inclusing me. I should continued my registration but I was too lazy.
CLupula @ Apr 17th 2008 7:01AM
Yeah, I have never felt any download took an unacceptable amount of time to download before this one. Anybody else notice it doesn't even create a save file, so EVERYTHING is saved to MGO itself? I mean, the only logic I can think of for this move is that it SHOULD definitely prevent cheating if there's no files anywhere other than Konami's servers where anything gets stored, but this is really ridiculous, especially when everything on the PSN runs so smoothly.
Da @ Apr 17th 2008 7:05AM
What about COD4, does it create a save file for every update released?
Khaeos @ Apr 17th 2008 7:08AM
there are two folders on ps3..game saves and game data..the latter is where all game updates are stored on the ps3 HDD
CLupula @ Apr 17th 2008 7:11AM
Most updates are stored in the Game Data Utility folder. They don't get a seperate file for each update, but they are still stored on the general file there. Metal Gear Online doesn't even have a Game Data file.
A.D. Olson @ Apr 17th 2008 8:48AM
It's a downloadable game - there's no reason to break up the data and put it into two sections on the PS3. It's not like you can just re-write newer data onto your Blu-ray disc - hence they created the Game Data Utility section.Notice the add-on to Super Stardust HD also doesn't appear in the Game Data Utility. It'd be pointless.
ChodalBerryWagon @ Apr 17th 2008 7:09AM
So the Euro PSN has been updated?
Anyone notice what else there is other than MGO?
Adam Pflug @ Apr 17th 2008 9:50AM
It was running really slow for me last night so I figured I'd let it run overnight. I woke up and found it had encountered a "network error", and stopped. After quiting the game (as it forced me to do), I found PSN was disconnected too, so maybe my internet connection went down. When I logged back in and started the game back up and started the download again I noticed it kept my progress - cool. Also it is now downloading at 500-600KBs, way more than I usually get on downloads from anywhere, including over bitorrent. Not half bad.
clif @ Apr 17th 2008 9:49AM
Holy Crap!!
It's a BETA!!!! It's not supposed to work flawlessly or as "smooth" as a gold master.
People need to stop being pissed or mad at konami. It's a testing phase.
When you use beta software, don't expect to work. I really think people have this idea it's a final version. Get over being angry.
To the complainers have you EVER used beta software?? I really don't think so. Beta's are going to crash. The final won't work this way. I've used mac os x beta's of tiger and leopord. They work fine but crash or some of the software would not function because it's not been bug tested.
Anyways your a guiena pig for konami sit back and enjoy. The bug and glitches are supposed to be fun. Yeesh. :-)
clif @ Apr 17th 2008 8:44AM
It's a beta!!! It's not supposed to work flawlessly!
To the complainers have you ever used beta software before? It's going to crash and not work fully at times. Hence why it's a beta and it's free!
Don't blame konami your a guiena pig sit back and relax. Enjoy the bugs and glitches. I am. Beta software=still testing!
drdre74 @ Apr 17th 2008 11:19AM
Yeah I tried to update last night and after like 10 min and only being on 3% i stopped it to play COD4.
stewie @ Apr 17th 2008 9:34AM
its going slow cause im sure everyone and there mother is downloading this bad boy at the same time if there's only a few seeds uploading its gonna take a while so as clif said sit back relax get some shawag or better yet get some beaver im sure some of you could use it later yall see everyone on the beta on monday it'll be worth the wait so once again i say chillax...
Da @ Apr 17th 2008 6:32PM
You're mum has a PS3. Sweet.
Brambler @ Apr 17th 2008 10:17AM
That patch was ridiculous. I almost decided to skip the beta because that download was taking so damn long.
has128 @ Apr 17th 2008 10:58AM
Dis anybody try downloading the Europian MGO?
after installing, does also need to be updated?
Kruegmeister @ Apr 17th 2008 11:05AM
I guess that is why it is called "beta"
Byron517 @ Apr 17th 2008 11:34AM
Hmm you guys I launched my Beta and nothing happened.. I went into the "agreement screen" after I hit the start game and it just stayed there and after a while it said "error servers something or other" WTF?? Anybody else get this??
What I'm trying to do is start the download now rather then waiting for the servers to go live on monday?? HELP!!!
has128 @ Apr 17th 2008 11:39AM
The http download doesn't work at all, the p2p one worked in the begenning (3%) then stopped with server error. tried it again, it continued were it stopped, however 10 min and the server error again (7%).
Don't know how long this will continue till they fix thier servers for the http or any other solution, especially that every time you get the error you have to quit the game and run it again.
Popfrogs @ Apr 17th 2008 12:16PM
Leave it to Konami to break Bittorrent (if that's what they're using). Also the auto-upload limiter is retarded. My upstream is capped at 50KB/sec although Time Warner says it's 512kb-768kb...and the upload limiter never throttles it, it pegs the upstream at the limit.
Anyone who has dealt with Bittorrent knows what happens when your upstream bandwidth is maxed out. You start dropping incoming packets and your download speed dies.
Plus..what's the point of a p2p torrent-ish system that doesn't seed when it's complete? I'd love to contribute for others after my download is complete...but I'm not even given the option.
Silly, silly, silly Konami. I hope MGO is cool on Monday.
Dan @ Apr 17th 2008 12:35PM
I did it by the http link at about 1pm today and it only took about an hour. guess i was just lucky
mccomber @ Apr 17th 2008 12:35PM
OK, for the complainers.
A: As has been said, it's a Beta. They're probably already learning, they need more servers.
B: Why are we already getting an update? Probably because they've already found some problems that needed fixed before it started. Remember how smoothly the Warhawk beta started? If not, you're lucky; a lot of people quite playing because it was so buggy and they expected a polished product. These public betas are almost a bad idea from that standpoint.
C: It's not actually live yet, just us ADD gamers who couldn't wait to start downloading stuff; how many people do you think were seeding the update compared to leeching it? I'm pretty sure "not many" is the right answer. And since Konami was getting his so hard, no wonder the http update wouldn't work. Just be glad that if you did quit/have the connection drop, it picks up where you left off. Ask how I know...
D: Gamers are the most impatient, whiny lot of children alive today.
Deathrace King @ Apr 17th 2008 1:50PM
I did the patch last night. The http version wouldn't work so I did the peer-to-peer and it took me exactly one hour and ten minutes to complete. Pretty slow, but it's done... until the NEXT update ;)
snu183 @ Apr 17th 2008 3:03PM
Got the update myself last night. Took about hr n half. Was annoyed that I couldnt play my ps3 n have the update occur in the backround, but i got some wii on. So Im confused, when this game goes retail live, we're goin to have to use the konami id etc? I was under the impression that this was for the beta so konami has direct access to the data packets/crashes/hang ups/ etc.
-d
2Perfect @ Apr 17th 2008 4:54PM
Hmm well at least they have a torrent download. Or by torrent is that supposed to be not official? And people just put a copy on a torrent?
In any case, I hope this option is still available if I have to patch when the game is released (retail).
Actually... they should just make this an option for every patch... add some legal uses for torrents. And it's not like anyone's gonna illegally transfer patches... lol :S
