Between the PS3's smaller install base than the competition and its still fairly sparse selection of games (they sputter out slower than ketchup from a glass bottle), we would never have anticipated the poll to swing so wildly in favor of the PS3.

yeah, I believe that when it's all over for 2008, the sales data is going to start showing this across the board, not just in terms of hardware, but also a major upswing in software as well. Now if Sony could just find a way to push all those PS2 users to upgrade faster.

The console race SHOULD be won by the company that truly furthers videogaming as a whole. More things can be done on the PS3 than the Xbox360 and Wii alone. Companies should follow its example and try to make advancements that further the entire technological experience.

Your right but i agree with the poll. If sony can continue to deliver AA titles every couple months and all these anticipated titles and the home service can be as good as expected/hoped than sony will win. I sold my xbox 360 for a ps3 late last year. I just dont see any future 360 titles that i must have but MGS 4 and little big planet and killzone and resistance 2 all are ones i cant not have. Xbox 360 will fade and die much quicker than ps3 will and a new xbox will come out again in 2 years or less.

I couldn't disagree with you anymore. 360 is solid. Great amount of must have game coming. Ps3 has some coming. I still can't wait for the Getaway3 that will be amazing. But still the 360 is awesome and it has great game. Just stop complaining and want a winner because if there is a winner that means the gamers loose. Think if Sony and MS and Nintendo(if we have to throw them in there) compete and compete what happens better games for the consumer, so if they stop competitions then the gamer that had the other two consoles will not get the awesome game like they have been seeing.

Odd i am an Ign insider and I have been on recently and never saw this.
In all honesty what has Sony done to deserve it, they over promise and over hype everything and fail to deliver beyond 75%. And before you bury my post, I own all 3 from this gen and last. I own far more games for my 360 and wii than my ps3, any multi platform game I want, I get for my 360 (rumble/better controller and better graphics) Microsoft may not be perfect but they sure as hell deserve more respect than sony.

Your entitled to your opinion but i had an xbox 360 and didnt see the graphics being better on that system. I dont see any xbox 360 titles looking better than motorstorm or ratchet or resistance. If your talking about third party titles than maybe for the time being or a year ago but i just dont see that happening anymore call of duty 4 and the newest ones look the same on both systems pretty much. I looked at the future releases on both systems and i couldnt see any xbox 360 first party titles that i had to have. name some because i am curious

Mass Effect? Either way, the graphics aren't going to be much different one way or another. Both have similar graphics cards. For the most part according to ign the games do usually run at smoother frame rates on the 360.

Both consoles have some great things going for them that cant be argued: Blu Ray for the PS3, upgradable HDD, option to install YD Linux, and low hardware failure.
360 has great Online service (even if you DO have to pay for it), great exlusive games and a decent library. I dont have a 360, but i can honestly say i wish i had a reliable online service.. COD4 online can suck.. bigtime on the ps3.
But you CANT argue graphics, or controller (or rumble anymore), or even price.
The 360's achillies heel is the DVD drive, plain and simple.

As far as owning more games on 360 i agreed i do to i own all 3 system and i owned more game on 360 but at the same time u have to remember the 360 had been out longer.AS far as better controler it depend on the type of game u playing if u playing dmc4 on ps3 360 the controler is better on the ps3.Fps work well on both but 360 edges its out by a lil bit. this gen u must own at least a ps3,wii, and 360 or pc

The 360 has long since blown it's load and 2008 will prove to be the year the PS3 started to kick it's ass. I'm still waiting for GTA4 to be released and watch as the 360's out there start dying in mass amounts due to how much play they are going to be getting. Meanwhile, our PS3's will be chugging along nicely, same game.. Oh.. No bonus DLC, enjoy that when you get your refub 360 back.

Truefully I wouldn't even own a PS3 if it wasn't for the fact I went thru 4 360's. I just get more depressed with the system and seeing articles like Quake Wars to be gimped on the PS3 and the developers "hoping to make the PS3 version to look as good as they can". The only reason I can't sell it is because I've got too many Blu-ray movies.

Sony does not hype up anything as much as Nintendo and Microsoft. Sony spends much less money on gaming advertising than both of them. Microsoft spent 10 million dollars alone on halo 3, and look at that game. Not much of anything. A decent game that doesn't push anything or have creativity. I just wish people knew how to make a game. 360 is next gen but the developing process is last gen just with more memory. Ps3 is so much different uses different technology which is harder to program but can do so much more. Just give it time and its already that time. The 360 couldnt handle the concept art on MGS 4. That alone would take up disc space.

The PS3's edge is not in textures or graphical ability it's more in processing power.
Its a well known fact (if you are informed) that the xenon is a slightly better graphics card than the rsx. Further more the xenon can use 512 ram for storing textures as opposed to ps3's 256.
Other things you might want to consider: the PS3 very difficult to program for and xbox has a better dev kit.
If you ask me it all evens out at the end of the day. But I do have to say that as of right now the "pain" being caused by the production differences "hurts" more than the "pain" of the cell outperforming the xenon. Due to the fact that the difficult programming makes it VERY hard to access the total potential. Thus the Cell has yet to actually "hurt" the Xenon. LOL
ps. No game has done it yet. And it is safe to say that if no game does it in 08 then we may never see it done with the PS3 due to the dev kit (which includes the programming etc.).

It seems to me that most of the Xbox big name games make their way to the PC eventually, so a lot of their exclusives really aren't all that exclusive. I also don't dig the direction they're taking their console, same goes for Nintendo, and I live in Redmond too so I'm really unpopular. I am perfectly happy with my PS2 right now, playing Persona 3, GoW 2 even GT4. I am not even interested in an Xbox360 or Wii right now and will eventually make the jump to PS3. With MGS4, FFXIII GoW3, GT 5 and a new Shin Megami Tensei on the horizon I can perfectly wait a little more. As long as the PS2 still sells and produces great games like the upcoming Persona 5 or the american version of Yakuza 2 the "next gen" or "new gen " or whatever stupid gen people want to call it are still going to be Number 2 in my book.

@Drake: Taking an intelligent sample of a particular type (or types) of people would make it accurate. Throwing up a poll on IGN isn't scientifically accurate, when you consider the varying consumer bases for each console. Hell, take the Wii as an example. It's largest consumer base, and the reason it sells so well, is the masses of casual gamers that Nintendo created out of non-gamers. These people wouldn't be going to places like IGN, to scan the news, to see what the other consoles are doing, or anything like that. They aren't interested. They're happy being able to waggle a remote about so that stuff happens on screen. If a sampling of those people came online to vote, the poll would show up different.
Nintendo has a smart business plan, even if a lot of you can't see it. Now, I'm not a fanboy or any sort, and in fact, if Sony actually kept their promises once in a while, they'd likely end up winning this 'console war', at least this round of it, but as things stand, Nintendo will come out on top. Sad, really. I think the PS3 has far more potential.

As it stands now, I only by multi-platform games on my 360, and leave the PS3 for exclusives, I like the replay value of achievements and they just can't compete with LIVE, sorry. And if you don't think a majority of multi-platform games are better on the 360, . . . you nOT comparing. Anyway, there is no way around that the PS3 is in last place until it's NOT, . . . hows that?

Every time i play a 360 I feel like I'm playing with my nice PC sitting 10 feet away from me..I dunno..maybe its because every game that I want to play is on the PC. So..360 has left my house and soon to be replacing that void in the entertainment center will sit a new "reliable" PS3. One thing Ive always admired of the playstation consoles is that Im most likely not going to have the majority of my favorite games playable on the PC that I have had or will have for my PS.

Yes, I am an Xbox 360 Fan(own all of the consoles but only have 2 games for the PS3) and of course I'm going to say that they IGNs users must be joking.
I'm also going to say that the PS3 has almost the exact same success rate as the 360, just the different release dates hide it.
And also the fact that since the PS2 didn't have a very large online community to start with that the PS3 had to start out late with PSN, unlike the original Xbox.
For service, I loved Halo and loved Rock Band(and almost all other Harmonix games), but Microsoft just does not live up to the service that Bungie or Harmonix is giving(I admit I don't know much about many of the PS3 services). If Microsoft just worked on their console a little bit more, they wouldn't be losing many potential customers(yea, I just played the sales card)because of RRoDs.
Both consoles are very close to the same(now even closer because of PS3 prices dropping), it's just the companies that are to blame. Sure, (most of) Microsoft isn't all about the gaming and almost all for teh money, but right now, they've got my money for releasing the AA(A) games earlier than the competition. Just give Sony a little time, Xbox 360 Fanboys, and you'll see what I mean.

But seriously if you purchased an xbox as of late fall last year you should have the new motherboard on there with the new heatsink setup (its called Falcon). But anyway what I'm trying to say is that there is now way you should be getting overheating problems now.
So please stop acting like buying an xbox constitutes buying a system that will fail without a doubt. The old setup did have a hight failure rate probably around 35% all that means is that 3.5 out of 10 guys would be unlucky LOLz. The rest lucked out.
With the new setup its clearly different and more reliable.
We have to move beyond this point in fanboyism where we just blog dumb stuff without first being informed about it. Problems that have been fixed can not be further addressed as if they are still a problem with current systems on sale.

The poll has over 1 million votes. Statistically, the error margin should be low, as there are 20 million people who could vote.
I "hate" the x360 for only one reason - it has 2 OK JRPGs I might like to play at some time (all else runs on my standard European PC). Doesn't justify a console-purchase. In my HALF of Europe, x360 isn't well-guaranteed. RRoD = shitload of trouble. And eventually in 3 years I'd have to buy another x360, just to still play my games! Ah, and XBL here is awful/nonexistent. The 360 controller is not suitable for anything but FPS/TPS, so is not for me (though I love Resistance for the weapons and unique gameplay).
I think Wii will initially be the "winner" of this generation, but hell no I will never buy a Wii.
PS3 just needs Sony to finally ship Home, which is a Service Pack of many patches, upgrades to API, unification of online-gaming API. PS3 should win-over again the types of games we loved in PS2.
Having 3 consoles to rule at once is not nice. PS2 ruled alone, and it was the best gaming ever. Hardware competition is not necessary, since MS doesn't have experise in making hardware (hey just ask IBM for cpu and then half-as*edly design PCBs + assemble by themselves), both nVidia and ATi/AMD constantly compete anyway and we get the best-at-the-time this way, Nintendo no longer care about hardware performance. Sony doesn't leave the ingenuity solely to Nintendo - they push EyeToy, unsurpassed new-gameplay (flow, patapon-psp, echochrome, LBP,...). Microsoft just throws money around for shooters, and provides a quick-start DX-based API to copy/paste/ship.
I just want MS not to allude any more Japanese developers. Let there be Halo4 ("Really finish the fight") and GeoW3 - it's stuff for braindead americans anyway. Or make a new SKU, that doesn't loud "Just 10% failure rate after a month".

I am an owner of all three consoles (and think all of them are great) but I can say I am not surprised by this poll either. It seems like the other two Sony consoles have slow starts and just boom into popularity. Like the PS2 got a humongous boost with GTA3 and I can predict, since most of the non-gaming savy people are going to associate GTA with PlayStation from last generation, it might give the PS3 a big boost as well. Plus, you got big hitters coming out , like GT5 Prologue that just came out, and you have MGS4, and I am sure there's many more on the way like God of War 3.
The Xbox 360 is a great console (despite some reliability issues with the RROD) but I do think its lacking major big hitter exclusives this year so far other than Gears of War 2, so I don't see its sales going being helped too much by this unless MS announces some more big-time titles.
This "war" is still new, so its going to be very interesting to see how it goes.

I don't agree. Why do people suck up to Sony when the console just doesn't deliver!? People are buying GT5P in stacks when both Forza 2 and PGR4 have better ratings at MetaCritic. I have both the 360 and the 60 GB PS3 (which I paid 600 Euros for!) and I spend 95% of my time on the 360. Why? It's more FUN! The controller is better! Online integration is better! It has more and better (exclusive) games RIGHT NOW. I still haven't finished Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank, but had fun with Gears, Condemned, Dead Rising, a fully working Orange Box, Bioshock, Guitar Hero II, Crackdown, Frontlines and Mass Effect. The list goes on. Sony is accouncing and announcing, people drool over 'Home' (which will be just a Second Life clone that will be forgotten after half a year) and 'Little Big Planet' and still nothing SHOWS. The carrot is dangling for a year now and the donkeys follow.
And yes, my 360 Premium had a RRoD last week after more than 2 years of good service. Got it back quickly after 7 days and bought an Elite in the meantime. Why? Because it's FUN. And that should be reason enough for people who enjoy games.
