While the PSP may not have done as well in Japan this week as it has done in previous weeks, the system still sold incredibly. It outsold all other consoles in the region
again, beating out its big brother the PS3 by a ratio of over 10:1. Here are this week's
numbers:
- PSP - 85,721
- DS Lite - 47,158
- Wii - 46,296
- PS3 - 8,232
- PS2 - 6,834
- Xbox 360 - 1,147
Not only did the PSP sell excellently in Japan this week, thanks mostly to the recent release of
Monster Hunter 2nd G, the system is also very close to reaching the 9 million milestone.
Pocket Gamer is reporting that by the time next week's numbers are out the PSP will have sold over 9 million in Japan alone. That's a scary number of PSPs. We wonder exactly how many of those sales can be directly attributed to a
Monster Hunter game.

Just curious how many units the DS has sold already. Does anyone have a number on that?
WazPS3 @ Apr 18th 2008 8:12PM
Yes 20 million + in Japan and around 70 million + worldwide.....with the Wii set to match that success. I think they are aiming for PSone and PStwo domination. Anyway the PSP is doing great now in Japan, does anyone have idea how many units the PSP has now sold worldwide? It must be around 35 million?
comeher2 @ Apr 18th 2008 9:57PM
Yes. that's right.
Nds sold in japan about 2.200K and world wide 70.000K
otherwise psp 9.000K in japan, 33.000K in worldwide

I think your numbers are off by a few decimal points. I doubt the DS only sold 2200 units in Japan and only 70000 units worldwide. Same with your PSP numbers.

I think he probably lives in one of the parts of the world where 7.000 means 7,000. So then 7,000K = 7,000*1000 = 70,000,000.

floow ryan ^^;
and Nds sales 22,000K in Japan.

@Jason B. : do you know what k actually means ?
Nate @ Apr 19th 2008 5:39PM
He does, he just doesn't realize that in some parts of the world, they swap the meaning of the comma and the decimal point in numbers.
I still don't know why you'd says 70000k instead of just 70 million.

It's weird how a single game can bump up the sales of a console like this.

@Dr. Haisook
Tell me about it. I'm just back from Japan and a lot of the stores were sold out. Most of the assistants bascially told me that due to Monster Hunter Portable 2G the shelves pretty much emptied. They admitted that they completely underestimated how many PSPs would sell due to the release of this game.
Brodie-san, proud to be one of the 85,721.
Luckily a new shipment arrived before I left. I actually got mine in Shinjuku and not in the likes of Akihabara (the electronics district) as it was empty of PSPs.
emirabal @ Apr 20th 2008 10:44AM
ANd again, i will state the previously stated, you make good games, people will buy the console for it.
Smokey @ Apr 20th 2008 12:18PM
Man, I can only hope they start caring more about the psp in Aus, so we can get some great releases and the support it gets in Japan, I love my psp, but damn it'd be great to live in Japan right now with one.
