Guitar Hero IV will feature other instruments and vocals
If what Activision's Bobby Kotick has stated in the latest issue of Conde Nast Portfolio magazine is true, then "Guitar Hero" could soon become a misnomer for the series. Guitar Hero IV could be branching out to "include a lot of other instruments, [and] vocals". Not a bad idea, except it's been done before.
Judging from Guitar Hero III's low quality controller build and its lackluster downloadable content, we don't really expect Guitar Hero IV to be much of a Rock Band beater. Especially when you consider Harmonix' superior ability to create note charts. Who knows though, maybe Neversoft will feature an instrument not currently available in Rock Band - that's the only real way we can see the franchise becoming relevant again.

When you say "done before", don't you mean it's been done before in some parts of the world?

I want my clarinet...they should come out with Jazz Hero. Just imagine that, playing a kick ass blues song on the sax.
Da @ Apr 21st 2008 10:38PM
Yeah now imagine sharing a sax with all your friends.. it's bad enough getting finger sweat on the guitar frets..

Darko @ Apr 21st 2008 10:47PM
Careful, that add on could cost you 30 - 60 bucks. Although, if they had Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear the Reaper on the play list it would be a must.
More Cow Bell!

I think your forgetting that rock band costs £180 in England. I would definitely consider buying guitar hero over rock band if it was a lot cheaper.

"Judging from Guitar Hero III's low quality controller build..."
What are you smoking!? The GH3 Les Paul is clearly superior to the Rock Band Fender. I LOVE the Strat guitar in real life, and I do like the longer neck and wider fret buttons, but the strum bar is pretty horrendous unless you're strumming both up and down, which I tend not to do. Plus the RB Strat just feels thin and cheap compared to the solidity of the Les Paul.
jq71586 @ Apr 21st 2008 11:44PM
Nope, that quote is right. I had 2 faulty guitar controllers before returning the game entirely.
HektikLyfe @ Apr 22nd 2008 12:47PM
I agree with Christian. The Guitar Hero III controller is far superior to the Rock Band guitar. The strum is terrible and the buttons aren't nearly as responsive.
Tristan @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:43PM
They both have their merits. I agree that guitar hero has a better strum bar, but for me, the wireless works a lot better on rock band than on Guitar Hero 3. If you were wearing a belt or had keys in your pocket the GH3 controller wouldn't work right. sometimes even the buttons and rivets in jeans caused it not to function properly. I don't know if they've improved the controllers since launch, but that was a deal breaker for me.
Laurens Holst @ Apr 21st 2008 9:50PM
Done before maybe, but still not available in Europe. At this rate Guitar Hero IV will be out here before Rock Band is. Goodie, I can keep using my GHIII guitars :). Let’s hope GHIV is compatible with the Singstar mics too.

As much as I hate Activision and their shitty treatment of the Guitar Hero franchise, I think you're a little off about the controller. My GH3 controller is still functioning well, but I've had to replace my Rock Band one.
I do like the Rock Band one more tho, the longer neck is nice, as are the lowneck frets. The strummer is nice, since it won't wake up my roomates.

Here's hoping for a keyboard!

Lets hope Guitar Hero IV is compadable with Guitar Hero III's guitar.. I wouldn't put it past them.
Rob @ Apr 21st 2008 10:45PM
If we wanted more instruments, we could just go buy rock band, since THEY came up with the idea....
What I like about Guitar Hero is the fact that everything focuses on pure guitar... I love it. Adding other instruments will just take the focus away from guitar...
Stick to the formula that has been working for you.. and don't start acting like EA and releasing 4 games a year please... thanks.

Excuse me? Lackluster? The downloadable tracks for GH3 are excellent! There's the really fun boss battle track pack, the Foo Fighters pack, the Velvet Revolver pack, Ernten Was Wir Saen, and the Classic Rock pack! I have played all of these and I enjoy every second of them! All of these songs are fun and challenging to play, and you are calling this "lackluster"? GH3 even got three tracks from Dropkick Murphys for FREE. How many FREE tracks does Rock Band have? Oh wait, just ONE, and it's a dumb track from the game Portal. Harmonix is only interested in nickel and diming people for every single DLC song, instead of offering a few freebies as a "thank you" to those who bought the game. You guys over at X3F are definitely biased against anything having to do with Guitar Hero, especially given your contant bashing of the series as a whole, starting with Guitar Hero Aerosmith.
If I keep on seeing stupid biased posts like this, I'll look to another site to supply my gaming news. You guys need to learn how to keep opinions to an OPINION article, not a newspost. And you guys are obviously spoiled by Rock Band's "DLC". Do you want Activision to try to keep up with RB's DLC? It's pretty hard doing so when you have to 1. Get the license to use the tracks, which can be a pain in the butt, 2. Create the note charts, 3. Get the drummer, singer, guitarist, and bassist animations correct, 4. Make sure the song is synched properly, and 5. Bring in people to cover the song if needed. And given that Activision is a much bigger company than Harmonix is (they actually release and publish other games), you can see why they only release DLC once a month. Red Octane has stuff to do as well. They are hard at work on GH:A and GHIV. So stop saying that Rock Band is the best thing ever, because it is so evident in your posts that you are just looking to bash Guitar Hero in every way, shape and form possible.
Guitar Hero IS relevant. Guitar Hero has contantly outsold Rock Band since the beginning, and is still a popular game to this day. And unlike Rock Band, Guitar Hero actually has reliable controllers, and the Les Paul is one of the best controllers out there! The Rock Band Strat has to be the WORST guitar controller I have ever put my hands on! Sometimes quality is better than quantity, and I think that shows with GH's hardware and the fun songs. Rock Band had some terrible design flaws in the Guitar and the Drums that made the game look very cheap in design, coupled with so many tech problems, that you know that it was rushed out to the market too fast. Activison/Red Octane/Neversoft actually took their hard time to work on GH3 and re-build the game from scratch, while Harmonix just re-used some old code to make Rock Band out of.
Oh, and on the topic of Note Charts, the note charts on Rock Band for the guitars were way too easy! Although they could be more "fun" in a way, it gets boring when it's too easy. They also overchart, too. Just look at "Thrasher" by Evile! GH3 was Neversoft's first attempt at making notecharts, and by the demand of GH players, they made some of the songs harder. Cliffs of Dover has one of the best notecharts out there, and it's fun to play!
Sorry for the rant, but this was just on my chest and I just had to vent my frustration with this biased site. All of those statements in that second paragraph are all biased, and without proof, none of those statements are true.

Obviously you're a scientist. Absolutely brilliant.
Let the kids play their games, and stop being so egotistical to think that maybe some people dont have the years of patience needed to devote to learning an instrument.
Jove @ Apr 22nd 2008 1:37AM
they should do a singstar hero with some instruments kinda mix. now that would be cool

Begin this true, in the end, Guiter Hero IV would be Band Hero? Cuz, the catch of Guitar Hero was using only the Guitar, but if you are really gonna use another instruments, then, it won't be only the guitar, but the whole band instruments, hence turning into Band Hero. Guitar Hero is falling, and hard!!!!

Lol, wut?
I take it they haven't used RB's strat?
Btw, 8+million sales makes the game pretty relevant. No matter how hard you try to troll.

Your way off on this one. Guitar Hero has always had the best guitar build quality my rockband guitar was ready to snap in two after the first week it's so flimsy, not to mention the massive recall problems when it first launched. I am very much looking forward to GuitarHero IV + Aerosmith and many millions of other people too judging by the sales numbers GuitarHero III is still racking up. GuitarHero just seems more fun to play for me.
Jabbar @ Apr 23rd 2008 10:46PM
i have to disagree that harmonix had better notes. i find ghIII to be way more challenging on hard than rock band is on expert, at least for a large number of songs. granted, rock band's store is more slick and has more songs, i like ghIII's animations better than the weak ones on rock band. and i am going to have to say that i like the guitar hero franchise guitars way more than the awesome looking strat from rock band. i just need to figure out a way to put the strum bar from the les paul on the strat....i've got to talk to those texas a&m guys
[MXL] Billy @ Apr 25th 2008 2:51PM
some of my friends with Rock Bands, opened their guitars to fix it up... when I saw that (one of they did it on my place) I was like "WTF" , and he just said "it's something that it need to be fix to play" and he was using screwdrivers and other stuff... I was like: "Puff, stupid cheap plastic guitar, I will stay with my great plastic guitar :) "
No doubt about it, GH Guitar is superior than RB guitar.
This looks like a post from a a guy that haven't play GH 1 or 2 and he loves its Rock Band game.
