PS3 Fanboy hands-on: Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit
There was more gaming to be had over at last weekend's New York Comic Con and PS3 Fanboy got to play the upcoming Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit. We unfortunately did not get the chance to play the PlayStation 3 version, but did give the Xbox 360 one a go. Obviously, we won't talk about console specific details such as visuals, control interface, etc. We will, however, be talking about the highlighted features found in both versions.
On the demo we played, we got a taste of two different battles from the beginning of the DBZ story. Once in the fray, we noticed right away that fights were fast-paced and intense. The ki meter, which controls the use of ki attacks and special abilities, fills up automatically. This allows more powerful moves to be used quicker and more frequently, also giving the gameplay more variety when developing your own unique fighting style.
A big addition to the game is the use of something called "Drama Pieces." These are events where a secondary character will swing by to aid you in battle. These characters will appear as certain conditions are met; for example, when health is low or when you sustain or deal a specific amount of damage. It appears that enemies can use this against you as well. They'll have their own allies to help them out, as witnessed when we used Yamcha to fight off the Saibamen.
Overall, battles were quick and exciting skirmishes. There are lots of things to do and lots of ways to mix up your fighting style. The faster ki and the drama pieces are good examples, but there's also an aura mode where you can boost your strength and speed. The options are all there to ensure you're playing a unique battle every time you go one-on-one. So far, our playtime with the game had been fun. We'll hopefully get to play more of the game when it comes out this June. We'll definitely be playing the PS3 version of course!

You seriously couldn't get your hands on the PS3 build? The PS3 one was right next to the 360 one.
mathab @ Apr 23rd 2008 9:01PM
Yeah, when we were there on Friday morning, the test PS3 booth didn't have the latest firmware and couldn't run the game.
After finding some time in between appointments, I swung by the booth again ... and both systems were offline. Luck of the draw.

Admittedly I didn't exactly get my hands on the build either. Was too busy waiting for the Sean Schemmel signing.
SSG @ Apr 23rd 2008 8:55PM
Traders!!! just kidding. the only dragon ball z game i have played was the first boudaki
never$$hort @ Apr 24th 2008 3:56AM
"Traders!!!"
Haha, I hate those people always correcting other posters grammar, but now I'm afraid that I've become grammar Nazi too, the correct pronunciation of the word you were trying to imply is traitors... Haha I know I suck
never$$hort @ Apr 24th 2008 3:57AM
Oh and Dragon Ballz sucks!!
;)
mint400 @ Apr 24th 2008 12:13PM
He could've meant "traders"... I mean they traded in their soul to play on that ... thing.
Jove @ Apr 23rd 2008 8:57PM
i hope this game wont give us characters that we wont care to play, the same old story lines, the same bullshit graphics and, well, the same old, same old. how many different games you need to tell the same story over and over?
Vincent @ Apr 23rd 2008 9:02PM
The hands-on lacks some comparisons to previous games! Is it similar to any of the previous DBZ games? Speed-wise does it draw closer to Budokai Tenkaichi or those slowass Budokai games?
mathab @ Apr 23rd 2008 9:10PM
Burst Limit is made by Dimps who also made the Budokai games. It's quite similar to those ones.
Ninjakamster @ Apr 23rd 2008 9:28PM
Great, I loved the 3 Budokai games on the PS2, didn't like the Budokai Tenkaichi games at all.
Glad to see they went back with the Budokai formula. I hope our port is good.
I don't want to be negative, but many times, our crossplatform ports are worse than the 360's and I will get a PS3 next month. I hope this port is great, too bad it'll lack things like achievements and custom soundtracks.
This game comes out June right?
PSN: KillaKornbread (the shirt is a lie!) @ Apr 24th 2008 3:58AM
same here. i have all of the Budokai games but every DBZ game ive bought since then (Shin Budokai and Budokai Tenkaichi's) have been boring to the point where i returned them after playing for like 2 weeks. what the hell do i need 150 characters in a fighting game for? i seriously only use like 5 tops.
the split screen play of Tenkaichi games was kinda annoying at best as well. too hard to actually find my opponent. i thought it was a great idea at first but i think i liked the old was better.

Stop PMSing. That's an order.
player-who-plays @ Apr 23rd 2008 10:06PM
I am glad this game is coming, sadly the game is basically a graphical upgrade to the budokai 3 game. I find it annoying how they try to make it sound brond new and never been done.
ex"we are going to change the colour of the sky, it will become super sky blue, we have never seen anything like this and can't wait"< - like that is a sum of how the makers sound to me
Ninjakamster @ Apr 23rd 2008 10:25PM
Sadly, I think its just like the first Budokai game, in that it only goes up to the Cell Saga.
So I'm guessing they'll make future Burst Limit games to finish the entire show's saga.
Popfrogs @ Apr 23rd 2008 10:29PM
Funny, after I read your previous comments I realize that you spend alot of time in the Waaaaambulance.
Joe @ Apr 23rd 2008 10:38PM
I haven't played a DBZ game for a while, would you say that this is better than the previous versions? (Not just in terms of graphics either)
Trickob @ Apr 23rd 2008 11:37PM
again, I have to ask: Am I the only person in the world who wants a good DBZ role playing game??? Enough with the fighters! It's been done! How about something exciting and new for the franchise?!?
Henry @ Apr 24th 2008 12:23AM
Hmm...why was this posted on PS3 Fanboy when you didn't even get a chance to play the PS3 version? haha :)
Kabapu @ Apr 24th 2008 12:36AM
Meh. As I've said before ... I'd rather see a Tenkaichi release.
Gaucho @ Apr 24th 2008 2:15AM
I was at comic con friday, saturday and sunday an dI got to Play this on the PS3 on all three days. Personally I found that the game was exactly the same as its ps2 predecessors except for (obviously nicer visuals) added cutscenes mid fight and the background blurs during fight movement giving it a more anime feel. The game felt right at home with the PS3 controller. I was kind of hoping that they would be selling it early at the Funimation booth. . . I know, impossible but am man can dream. . . a man can dream.
never$$hort @ Apr 24th 2008 4:02AM
@deusmecha & Popfrogs
Haha... that was awsome!! Seriously everyone read gmans posting history, what a whiny-a$$ douche-bag!!
mazza_man @ Apr 24th 2008 9:44AM
Though the graphics are quite nice, this seems to be a huuuugggeee step backwards for the franchise. The Budokai games were average fighters at the best of times, made only bearable by DBZ characters.
This doesn't appear to simulate what DBZ fights are about at all, unlike Tenkaichi.
Lo @ Jul 9th 2008 10:58AM
GO get the DBZBT3 if you want to play a new dbz game burst limit is 2d like the rest who cares about h.d. and DBZBT3 is better and the dumb ass that said you dont need 100+ charcters its dragon ball not brawl you need to play with who ever the F*** was on the show smiles and hugs for everone "Atari stop going backwards forward looks much better"
