GTA IV online is down [Update]

If you are a proud owner of Grand Theft Auto IV on the PS3, then you might not be so proud to know that the online multi-player mode is down. Or, at least it appears to be so for PS3 patrons. Numerous players have received errors upon attempting to connect; this blogger included has not been able to get the multi-player to work. An error message pops up: "Cannot connect to game provider, please try again." Hopefully, Rockstar can get things running soon. Wouldn't want to upset the GTA IV crowd, if you know what we mean. In the meantime, get back to the single player game. We'll keep you posted as we find out more.

Yeah i got this message too, i got worried for a seconds but i retried and it logged in but then in game i got that contacting service provider message on nikkos phone

the single player campaign should keep you busy for weeks to come. not like this should ruin the game experience. plus give it a break, the game is one day old.

The online was working fine last night. (picked it up at midnight) Kind of boring I guess because there weren't that many people on...but its DAMN sure not working now.

Good point. I saw this coming though, knew the servers would crash eventually. Fortunately I played last night :D. What a masterpiece. Best game I've ever played.

*sigh* unfortunately i've having a screen size issue..the edges are slightly cut off and they havent included a way to change the screen size that i can find in the game. I have had this issue with other games but they all offered ways to adjust your screen size.

You know... Xbots are funny.. when their WHOLE system was down (not just one game) they were all suing people and what not.

Its true though, they point and laugh with any hiccup we experience and then its like "ya im on my 3rd xbox and i pay for the opportunity to play with people online..although i already pay for an internet connection...however im still gunna laugh at you because you were inconvenienced by your ps3 for an hour. so i just woke up at 11:30am west coast. I was up all night with friends playing online. Dont freak out, let them do there work on it. The game was running good besides the errors some of us were getting. I woke up and have the same issues as the pic on this post. to bash the ps3 for fixcing the problems is stupid. thats the best thing about the ps3, they can fix problems without a bunch of work. they probvley knew this was going to happen and the reason they didnt fix it before is beyond me but it will be up in a few hrs i bet . ( i hope lol) Be sides this game is so much fun, in single plyer or online so enjoy what you got...peace

I know, I was the same way with COD4. I always play through the singleplayer first. There's no reason to avoid 100+ hours of awesome single player story and just jump online and start killing fools. Unless you're Generation Z.

I have only played single player for about two hours. Although this problem should be addressed quickly. Of course the PSN is free. Despite that they still need to run a good service. That is one of their main selling points. I am sure SONY wants to sell consoles and it does them no good if their online cannot function properly. Obviously the strain is going to get larger as more and more buy PS3's. Now either SONY provides an excellent free service or they charge for a service that can handle millions.

i too am getting the same error message. i've had the game for 7 hours so far and played it about 1.5 hours because i also have to work in between sessions. i hope the issue is resolved by tonight.

Theres nothing wrong with going online first,before completing the missions, have you ever been online?

I had the good part of 24hrs worth of online play before i woke up this morning and couldnt get on.
Its great fun, 16 players on at once, killing, stealing cars, racing, teaming up, etc etc its MINT!

word of warning though, if your gunna run a big room please turn the police option off, it starts to give you frame rate issues - not little ones either if the game has to much going on

You think that no online is bad? How bout those of us having no gameplay at all? The freeze issue is widespread and NOT yet fixable as incorrectly labeled in this posting. . . (and no, my multiplayer online is not connecting either)

Sony really needs to smarted up and get a solid online system going even if it means charging for it

Warhawk - Took a month before I could play online properly and still get booted

GTA4 24 hours now with no online play.

COD4 queues took so long I ended up selling the game.

GT5:P ... Well I never had the online problems with it, the online portion was just a huge letdown.

Warhawk, aside from the start up problems and the ranks not tracking it played fine. COD4 never had any problems at all. GT% Prologue, no problems either. Maybe you're a bit of a whiner. There will always be problems when lots of people are doing the same thing.

ya it is a bummer that the servers are down but half the people ive talked to before it was released didnt even know about the multiplayer... so for alot of people it wasnt as anticipated for some as it was for others... hence ... not as big a disappointment
