Rumor: God of War III going online
A recent posting on SCEA's recruitment website points out that the team who've worked on God of War and God of War II are looking for an "online gameplay programmer." Now it's not stated that this hire or the online gameplay feature are specifically for the upcoming PS3 title God of War III; however, if the games mentioned in the job ad are any indication, then all the signs are pointing to Kratos' next adventure.
Online play for a God of War game will be an interesting sight to see. How will it work? Will the game then change its name to "Gods of War"? In any case, we'll wait it out and see how things develop. Let's just hope that God of War III will be one of the next games to congest and crash servers. You knew that was coming.

Having not played any of the God of War games (I know, the shame) how is this online mode going to even work ?
mccomber @ Apr 30th 2008 12:48PM

My girlfriend loves to watch too. She actually finished Chains of Olympus - her first completed videogame experience. She's working her way through GoW 1. Hydras scare her.
Popfrogs @ Apr 30th 2008 12:45PM
Your girlfriend finished Chains of Olympus? That game is pretty damn hard...maybe I need smaller hands.
I beat GoW a few months ago then bought GoW2, I'm within 30 minutes of beating it but don't want to yet. MGO Beta is too time consuming anyway.
True_Darknight @ Apr 30th 2008 12:24PM
oh and yeah doh.. UT3!!!
I rulez at that too!!

co-op? or duel?
Hashbrown Hunter @ Apr 30th 2008 2:21PM
The only possible way GoW can work for online is co-op. Dueling would prove to be very tedious online unless they change GoW's gameplay.
Cornerman8 @ Apr 30th 2008 12:46PM
I know this is rumor and there's no solid evidence that this even applies to GoW3, but if it were true...it'd be might interesting. The previous installments have a distant camera, which would aid in co-op play. The gameplay mechanics (Blades of Chaos in particular) favor single player with their wide hit radius. Of course if you ramp up the number of enemies onscreen you could compensate for that. Of course increasing enemy volume is a must if you're talking co-op. Two player QTE events? Double team moves/kills? They could pull an Insomniac move and make two seperate experiences (single and co-op). Co-op would definitely bring even more people to the game, since 1) most of the multi-million selling games have strong multiplayer tie-ins, and 2) it'd be the only co-op action/beat-em up on a next-gen platform. If done well of course. But then its all just a rumor. Interesting, very interesting indeed.
redhotmoltenlava @ Apr 30th 2008 1:20PM
Call me a traditionalist but I think that online competitive multiplar or co-op would be a terrible idea - I want them to concentrate their efforts on making the best singleplayer experience evverr.
ArcaneBane @ Apr 30th 2008 4:22PM
Thats exactly what I came here to post. I think people are becoming so obsessed with online play that they end up losing the demographic of people who enjoy playing games by themselves.
Don't get me wrong I play some online games but I'd rather God of War have an epic single player game.
karamo17 @ Apr 30th 2008 1:39PM
For some reason when people hear online they are thinking deathmatch, team deathmatch and other things in that nature, I don't that is the case here, it might just be co-op, that is the logical assumption if there is going to be an online component.
Nate the Prophet @ Apr 30th 2008 2:26PM
Online GOWIII would involve 2 different modes:
1) A simple head-to-head fighting mode to have fun killing your buddies
2) A near MMO mode set in the GOW universe. You create different classes of characters that grow over time/experience in both strength and abilities (MGO type stuff). But the missions are cooperative against AI game enemies (though you can play skirmish matches against other players too).
Okay, here's what I mean...Let's say the GOWIII game ends with sort of cliff-hanger or open-ended finish. The Online game, then, is a WoW-style game where you and other online players join forces in huge group battles (think WoW Raid dungeons) and kill massive bosses until you eventually can take down the Big Bad himself. It's like another entire game (GOWIII pt. 2) but instead of a single-player game is a multiplayer online game that focuses on group play and allows you to create a more versatile character.
I realize that this is a total wet dream, but it sure would be fun. I'd play this for hundreds of hours.
Vcize @ Apr 30th 2008 2:43PM
Online co-op would be epic.
Hopefully it's co-op, as I can't imagine a head-to-head mode in this game that would end up being anything more than a something people would try once and move on from.
Nerdkiller @ Apr 30th 2008 3:14PM
Whos up for a 32 man God of War deathmatch with blood spilled, torsos torn and limbs ripped? I think I can see Jack Thompson's biggest nightmare.
CJLopez @ Apr 30th 2008 4:06PM
I can already see the headlines on the Newspaper over these
"10 year old boy mutilates his friends on school. He said -but I do this on GOW all the time!!! And he owed me 10 cents-"
CJLopez @ Apr 30th 2008 4:08PM
I hadn't played any GOW so far, i'm planning on asking a friend t hang em over but I finish all my current games (Brawl is consuming a lot of time over here, xD, so the homebrew scene)
but man, online on GOW3, hope news on what is gonna be comes soon
Dan Davis @ Apr 30th 2008 4:12PM
Hey instead of using your cell phone to call Roman, you can use your GoW cell phone to call ROME!
See what I did there?
McKey1991 @ Apr 30th 2008 5:26PM
lulz, i c wat u did thar!
Cornerman8 @ Apr 30th 2008 5:04PM
I understand people apprehension for multiplayer play. Sometimes when developers throw in multiplayer, they end up having to take sacrifice something else (the single player mission, or some other feature of the game). Sometimes you end up with just a sucky multiplayer that no one wants, and ends up being a waste of time and resources. Resources that could have been used in furthering the single player game. Its a valid concern. A deathmatch or fighting game using God of War's current combat system would play horribly as strategy would be out the window. Changing the combat system is changing God of War as we know it. Co-op makes the most sense, and there's actually Greek mythology to back it up as far as adding additional characters. I think Hercules was a son of Zeus too. I don't think God of War needs online play to be great. If they just give me more to kill, with new ways of killing them, new environments, great graphics and another compelling story, I'm good to go. Online doesn't equate to bad necessarily. Co-op is more in line with what I'm down for...if it were to be applied. It'd require the least amount of core gameplay changes. it shouldn't be tacked on though. Don't do it at all unless it can be something that people will actually enjoy playing over and over again.
Wrathbringer @ Apr 30th 2008 5:52PM
Hmm, what if the gameplay programmer is just there to tell them what features would work best for an online scoreboard? I personally think that the GoW experience does NOT translate well into online, so I'm hoping that the guy they're looking for is for advise only on an online Leaderboard.
playcrackthesky @ Apr 30th 2008 8:00PM
Maybe its for another game in the works? They didnt specify GOW did they?
Omen_20 @ Apr 30th 2008 10:22PM
Anyone ever stop to wonder if this is just something to do with Home implementation?
