PS3 software has leading percentage of 'good' games

With help of review aggregate site GameRankings.com, website Gamefunk decided to see how many "good" games were on each of the three home consoles ("good" being defined as anything over 80%, "bad" being games below 60%). Of the three, PS3 rose to the top, with the least percentage of "bad" games, and the highest percentage of "good" games. Take a look:

Xbox 360: 374 games: 26% good, 24% bad
PS3: 122 games: 33% good, 17% bad
Wii: 189 games: 11% good, 37% bad

While the software library of the PS3 is rather small, in comparison to the other two, it's more likely that a shopper buying a completely random game from the PS3 shelves will fare better than when shopping for the other consoles. While we have to endure through a bit of shovelware on our system, we feel bad for the uneducated Wii shopper, where "bad" games are seemingly the norm.

Doesn't surprise me. Wether the reason is high development costs meaning less shovelware dumped onto the system or not, it sounds logical to me, and that's perfectly fine by me. It's always better when developers actually have to put effort into their games to make a profit.

This post insults me both as a gamer and a statistician. I have never seen a bigger misinterpretation of statistical data in my life just to make PS3 look good. You fanboys really that desparate?

The real outcome of this survey shows that there are twice as many good games on the 360 than on the PS3. THAT is the conclusion! Who cares about "random"!!??

The point of the data, if you read the linked article, is that they Wii has 37% of its games being rated below 6.0

Not that the article here isn't focused on the PS3, as that is their job. Just sayin' that the point of the data was originally to show how many poor Wii titles there are. :)

For as many games 360 has in its library, 26% isn't bad at all and could almost be argued as being the "winner", but the Wii is definitely the loser here.

I wonder how many MS/Sony/Nintendo-made games are in the good/bad category. I must say that almost all of the Sony-made games *cough* Lair *cough* have gotten very high reviews and I really do believe in the saying "Quality over Quantity" and I hope Sony continues with that attitude on their games because that is what is making me want to get a PS3.....

Yes they were stating the ratio not the quantity. Im very glad that the PS3 is hard to code for at the moment. It will imo keep away the devs that want to build a half assed cash cow.

Funny, I have a better time with more titles on the Wii than the PS3. I am NOT casual, just I found the games on the Wii more entertaining and there were more games that entertained me.

Well it is just a percentage, so there's no reason to be upset about a system being misrepresented. Besides, its not as if we don't know what the "good games" are for each system.

A good game is 8.0 or higher, while a bad one is 6.0 or lower. Average games are not taken into consideration.

The number of "good" Wii games is lower due to reviews being skewed in favor of a certain type of game. I won't argue that there is a lot of crap on there, I'm just saying there are some Wii games which are fun to play but didn't get "good" reviews. I'd say there are more games I enjoy on the Wii than on the PS3, however, the games I do enjoy on the PS3, I enjoy more and for longer. It's all bs anyway. Just play what you like.

Useless comparison, you can't compare the 360 userbase to the PS3 or Wii because they haven't been out the same amount of time, it just isn't fair.

Not exactly buddy. Release date is pretty useless when it comes to stats. If you double the PS numbers it is still below the 360's numbers.

I should note that doubling the PS numbers is unfair to the 360 because the PS numbers are for a year and a half worth of PS games not one year. Thus doubling the numbers would make it seem as if PS was out for 3 years.

Devin, no doubt. There are a lot of games out that I still haven't gotten to (Orange Box, Unreal 3, Folklore, Skate, etc). Granted not being a college student anymore really cuts down on my playing time .

And I own... GTA4, CoD4, All pro Football, NBA08, UT3, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Assassin's Creed, Pixel Junk Monsters, Tekken5, R-Types, Castlevania:SoTN, Crash Bandicoot 3, Pain, Go Sports Diving..... hmmm am I forgetting something??

Here's the breakdown:

XBox360 (launched 891 days ago)
= 97.24 good games = 1 good game every 9.1 days
= 89.76 bad games = 1 bad game every 9.9 days

PS3 (launched 531 days ago)
= 40.26 good games = 1 good game every 13.1 days
= 20.74 bad games = 1 bad game every 25.6 days

Wii (launched 595 days ago)
= 20.79 good games = 1 good game every 28.6 days
= 69.93 bad games = 1 bad game every 8.5 days

Basically, the Wii releases one good game a month (SSB? Mario Kart?), the 360 has been consistent, and the PS3 is releasing good v. bad at a rate of 2:1. I'd be interested to see how these play out after each has been on the market over 1000 days.

Hrm. What I find to be most pertinent is that we suck at AAA titles. Call them "great" games -- over 90% on Metacritic.

Wii: 5 games at 90% or better
360: 12 games at 90% or better
PS3: 4 games at 90% or better

What's worse is that all 4 of the AAA PS3 games (GTA4, COD4, Oblivion, Rock Band) are available on the 360 as well.

Maybe we're being unfairly elitist here. Maybe it's just not realistic to make a 90%+ game nowadays. But even if you move the cutoff to 85%, the numbers don't get better:

Wii: 9 games 85% or better
360: 36 games 85% or better
PS3: 16 games 85% or better

More than twice as many "quite good" games on 360 as on PS3. Worse yet, almost half of the "quite good" 360 games are not available on PS3, while only 4 or 5 of the "quite good" PS3 games are exclusives. A realistic look at the statistics shows that the PS3 really needs to catch up on the "stellar exclusives" front.

I think a 1000 day sampling would provide sufficient data. Check all three on their 1000th day and see what the numbers show.

with the many "good" games (IMO) coming out this year for PS3, I can only imagine that the % will increase......

I wonder if they include PSN/XBLA games? The PSN has some pretty good games out along with more coming (echchrome, debuting today, being one those).....

Yes I agree with that 11 % for the Wii and I Believe that 9-10% is NINTENDO Software and the Remaining 1-2% is third party support (LOL). As for the 360 having twice as many good games as the PS3.... well Duh it came out a year earlier.... As for the PS3 not having as many crappy games on it.... well Duh its only been out one Year.... What About PSP vs DS I'm more curious about that.

I owned 360 till it turned crispy, but Yes I agree.
I own a PS3 hooked up to my PSP FTW its almost SIN.

I am a PS3 and a 360 owner. It's no secret that there are more "good games" on the 360.

I'm glad I have a PS3 for games like Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank, and games you just can't play on a 360 at all. But I sure wouldn't want the PS3 to be my only system. It simply doesn't have a "LOT" of good games yet.

I also own a wii, and beyond the Ninty originals I've bought only 1 other game (super swing golf). The rest of wii's games are largely total crap.

The chart we have in this article is interesting but the story it tells really goes like this:

1) 360, Most great games of any system
2) PS3, has a few great games
3) Wii, has a few great games (and a ton of garbage)
