Killzone 2 out February 2009
Latest news from the PlayStation Day 2008 event in London drops a release date for Killzone 2. Looks like the game has been pinned down for a February 2009 release -- at least for Europe anyhow. That's a little later than we had hoped, but it's all well that it is coming. Just try not to think about it being a year off.

(First Post!)

I said it was going to be delayed. It's for the best really. That way it will not compete with Resistance and will help keep the momentum going for Sony in early 2009. Also the expectations for this game are so high (thanks to that stupid cgi trailer) that it's better for them to take their time and polish it up as much as they can.

MGS is June 12th.
WipEout HD could be July.

Delaystation at work again...
what a load of crap
T-P-M @ May 6th 2008 12:18PM
This is the first official release date, check your facts troll...
Devin @ May 6th 2008 12:19PM
What about NA? It still says September 2008 on IGN......
If another 4-5 months can make the game even better and more worth playing then I'm all for it. It would be nice (if they actually do change the September 2008 date here in NA) if they gave a reason as to why......
Man I can't wait for this game to come out....

Agreed, this was to be a launch title. This has reached the point of no caring. THey'll try and prop this up as a MGS hotness, but the first KZ wasn't overtly spectacular.
Since Haz has taken over the delays have gotten out of hand. NO competent manager allows delays -they enforce deadlines and reward employees for making the deadlines (unless public employees).
Laurens Holst @ May 6th 2008 1:09PM
And then the employees have to work their ass off and have no life and quit their jobs to work for someone who doesn’t require them to push beyond what they can handle.
You can’t just ‘enforce’ deadlines, it is more complex than that. If you can’t make the deadline, you’ve hired too few people, but by that time you can’t hire more people as they will only delay further. This is because they need to be brought up to speed, which not only costs their time but also the time of the existing developers. This is a well-known project management anti-pattern.

Also, strict enforcing of deadlines is the antithesis to all software engineering. Unless you want a half-assed, bug-ridden, beta-esque pos game - wait. There's a reason software (including games) get delayed. (Hint: It's not to annoy children like you...)

Maybe it is also being delayed due to resistance 2 coming this year i hope? I am sure this kill zone will be 10x better than the first since the first wasnt great. I work at sony and i played killzone 2 and its the greatest game ever maid by far!! i worked at microsoft before sony and got a chance at halo 4 and it is the same as part 3 basically. not a great game at all compared to killzone 2. but resistance 2 is so good i cant even talk about it or my head will explode so i will leave that one up to your imagination. gotta go back to gaming at sony see yall soon in killzone or resistance. yay!!!!!!
Eggy @ May 6th 2008 1:13PM
Damn I had it pegged for Christmas. Looks great though.
Joe @ May 6th 2008 2:05PM
I am happy it got delayed this way both Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 will not be going up against each other. Plus the beta must be some time in the Summer because last time Seb (motherH) said that is when that public beta would take place.
pavs @ May 6th 2008 2:52PM
Well, does suck that its not this year. But I guess we can start building up a list for 09. GOW3, Killzone 2, full version of GT5.
Thats why you gotta love sony. They always give you something to look forward to, i guess to give you a reason not to killyourself after buying all their expensive (yet awesome) products and having to pay off the debt.
Niko_Bellic @ May 6th 2008 3:16PM
Twisted Metal, LA Noire, Socom 4, you'd think to expect something from Team Ico, and maybe we'll get Home by then. *fingers crossed* Killzone 2 better not get delayed any further, though; those Guerrilla boys are starting to look like a poor investment on Sony's part. If Killzone 2 turns out to be nothing more than a prettier KZ1, count me out.
pavs @ May 6th 2008 4:13PM
I don;t know. Everyone seems to have a negative view of Killzone 1, but I enjoyed. It was no where close to being the "Halo Killer" all magazines hyped it to be, but I played through the main story several times, each time with a different character, and found it fun.
Plus I really liked the look and the story. Nice to have a future/scifi FPS without weird looking aliens and monsters. Helgast look like evil Storm Trooper Nazis, and its hard to imagine anything cooler than that. (not that I think Nazis are cool, but I hope you know what I mean)
Don @ May 6th 2008 5:30PM
Being that Feb 09 is an official European release date, I can see it having a Nov-Dec release date in NA (something else to help bolster their Christmas sales.) Even if Resistance 2 releases in Nov., look at how many blockbuster releases we had around the same time in Nov. this year. Plus, if you go out and buy Resistance, you're not going to pass up on Killzone 2 and vice versa. You might put one off for a little bit, but eventually you'll drop the money on the other game. Releasing the two around the same time wouldn't hurt, and would only help the momentum of the PS3 going into Christmas.

I have no doubt that R2 and K2 could coexist this Fall. There will be a boatload of games coming down the pipeline then from first and third party developers. But despite that, gamers buy games. And I suspect some of the third-party games of the Fall will be delayed or be a little underwhelming. In my mind Killzone HAS to be pushed back. The FPS genre is a battle of the Joneses. If you want any hope of getting a favorable review score and decent fanfare, you've got to meet expectations and go a step beyond. Halo has made co-op and multiplayer standard. CoD4 has made stat-tracking and upgrades standard. If you make a FPS, you have to at least have those features, or your game falls in the cracks. You're B-movie challenging a blockbuster, and gamers are content to stick with full-featured games. Look at R2, its taken all the Halo and CoD4 features and added a ton on top. I believe that's why Haze got delayed so much. Killzone 2 can't run 40 player deathmatches, but it what it does provide HAS to be more than solid. Another example is Prototype, though its a different genre, the same applies. After GTA4 throws out a boatload of multiplayer options, and still pushes the genre more than anything to date, a game like Prototype can't hope to compete and not be seen as a fledgling. Multiplayer MUST be added. Graphics MUST be polished. Gamers' expectations are high and ever rising. Its funny, but sometimes your game is only as good as the game that came before it. Our games get delayed partly, because if they released as they were, we'd criticize it for not being CoD4, or GTA4, or whatever the case may be. I feel for the developers who are just putting out their first game, when you've got others who are working on their 2nd engine revision. You got to get that engine out, so you can start work on improving it, but that initial offering has to be good enough to fund the future revisions. Do what you must Guerilla.
