It appears Sony is getting excited -- Kaz Hirai made a statement recently boasting the PS3's upcoming success this generation. Overtaking the Wii and Xbox 360 is within Sony's grasp, when looked at through the telescopic lens of the "ten year life cycle". In a
video interview with the BBC, he talks up this point as well as some of the trials and tribulations of creating the PS3, the launch, what's to come later this year, and challenges or hurdles he expects Sony and the PS3 to overcome in the near future. It's pretty interesting to watch a sit down chat with Kaz, so be sure to check it out and let us know your opinions.

3rd time in a no Playstation will reign no.1!!!!!
Da @ May 8th 2008 8:18PM
No one can say this is 'proven' yet (although for my money I think PS will come out on top), and I guess a lot of people will call BS; but the fact remains that all the bad press Sony has received has been based on unproven rubish circulated, so maybe circulating a little bit of unproven good press will really work a charm.
IE; If Kaz starts telling everyone PS is on top (or will be), the general consumer might listen.

He didn't answer any of the REAL questions!

Even the BBC wasn't that impress by Kaz answers.

Ow I forgot
I just love this Kaz thinks there 80g PS3 in Europe.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/technology/2008/05/sony_boss_and_your_questions.html
"He pointed out that a 80GB PS3 in Europe was the largest of all territories. Now, I'm not sure about mainland Europe, but is the 80GB model available at all in the UK? I can't find one."

By the time playstation claims victory, Nintendo and Xbox will have released their next consoles. lol Sony only has 1.5 years to claim victory while still having competition.
Tetsuhana @ May 8th 2008 9:43PM
And by the time that happens the PS3 will be the same price as those other two consoles. The average consumer may not be too crazy about having to buy a 720 just a few years after getting a 360. Microsoft and Nintendo will need to come out with new consoles sooner just to match the PS3 in my opinion.
adolson @ May 9th 2008 9:51AM
The whole reason I didn't buy a 360 was that Microsoft released it too early, effectively cutting off the life that was left in my Xbox. I much prefer Sony's long-term strategy. There's nothing to be gained yet, even in two years' time I'm sure, by upgrading. Games look and play amazing as it is, and these still are early days.
WiiFTW @ May 8th 2008 9:13PM
I agree with McLaren.
As a Wii early adopter, I can say that the Wii doesn't have that much to offer hardcore gamers. I'm drooling over the stuff the PS3 has/is getting. I'd say that between the 3, the Wii will outsell simply on price/Wii Sports etc., but between 360 and PS3, the PS3 will win in the long run. But MSFT and Nintendo might release new consoles soon.
ryan @ May 8th 2008 9:49PM
in 4 years time computers will probly be more robust than the PS3 and the next xbox will most likely adopt newer technology as well. If 360 and Wii continued on for 6 more years, then yeah the PS3 would dominate them.
but to say that the PS3 won't have any competition in the coming years is a bit blindsided. The newer consoles will most likely offer more enriching experiences. The PS3's saving grace will be that it would be the cheapest console on the market and be in the PS2's current position.
but hey, it's great to see that Kazzie has a great outlook for the PS3 right now, and we can hopefully see a jumpstart in that nice "PS2" position.
Draco @ May 8th 2008 10:27PM
Sony and MSFT's next systems should have replaceable video cards in them and open ram slots, then every 2 or 4 years you could replace the video card and add a stick of memory.
if there was 3 possibilities for video card and ram then it shouldn't be to hard to program around it and you wouldn't have to replace the whole box as often.
ryan @ May 8th 2008 10:38PM
that'd be awesome. i hope they do that. so it can just be about the games and a small update with the graphics cards every now and then.
NineT9 @ May 8th 2008 10:34PM
@Draco, not going to happen...ever.
For quiet a few reasons why I don't even feel like going into... and im sure someone out there will know what im talking about and will tell you
1 reason though, is game developers like consoles because they develop the game for 1 standard spec system. As long as it runs good on that specific standard, their gold. Compared to PC's, where you have to cater to 'cheaper' pc's, expensive pc's, you have to realize in 1 or 2 years technology will improve a lot, etc...
Lets say they DID add the option of adding a Video Card & more RAM...This means a game developer will make a game for that more powerful system...and then the people who bought the previous less power system will be screwed with a choppy/slow game
Sorry for my bad grammar... I actually used to think like you, a console with upgradable Video Cards, RAM, etc...until I saw someone post what I just said and more...and then I realized yea, that would be incredibly stupid hehe :D
android @ May 9th 2008 12:14AM
@draco, isn't that what you call a pc?
Draco @ May 9th 2008 5:46PM
I'm not saying it will ever happen, but it would be nice. if it can add a couple years to the life of a system I'm all for it, they did it for the N64 and it worked fine, Perfect Dark came with the extra ram. I thought it was done on another system as well.
The problem with PC's is that there are way to many combinations of components, I mean there are several companies making geforce 8800's and they are all different. if they had 1 company make 3 models over 6 years of video cards. and only 3 different combinations of memory default, default plus 2GB, or default plus 4GB.
I would pay any amount to stick another 1 GB of ram in my PS3 just to get linux to play properly.
frankym @ May 8th 2008 9:47PM
Interesting.....however considering the rapid pace at which technology moves consoles will start to have a 4 year life span.....I believe MSFT will launch a new console by the end of next year....will be interesting to see what Sony does in response to this...PS4 may come sooner than later.

With forsight..wouldn't it be wise for M$ & Sony to Make their next system that could be Upgradable (video Card chip)... I mean the CPUs are powerful enough (except the Wii) so that would have to be upgraded.

Reymo @ May 8th 2008 10:33PM
@Draco
You bring up a very good idea. The only thing is..fragmentation. Developers can develop something for the crowd who upgraded their components and leave the others behind. But I guess if they made two version..low-med and then high for the upgraded component I guess it could be possible. But I just see it as a failure.
Dwag @ May 8th 2008 10:42PM
You guys forget that 360 and Wii still can evolve like the PS3 and can take on the PS3 everytime I hate hearing that the PS3 will do this but yet has it done it? Home to me seems wasteful In Game XMB is all I ask.
I believe that PS3 will be seconded not First it just cant take that position I mean come the PS3 has taken too long to reach it glory I mean the only game I really setting my sights on is FFXIII and that doesn't seem to be coming out until '09
This dude is obviously gonna be touted as if the PS3 can do it all but come on us fanboys know the truth until PS3 start send out the Sellers and to me thats just FFXIII and MSG then PS3 just might lose the War.
Mein Bratwurst @ May 8th 2008 11:04PM
Well at least SCE didn't play all their cards early (Microsoft..), what do you have to look forward to on 360? Halo is done and please don't say Gears of War 2, part one was way overrated. No replay value and the multiplayer was boring IMO.
Flame on and keep bashing PS3, you'll be good at it some day.
Dwag @ May 8th 2008 10:44PM
Sorry for my grammar I typed a little to fast but I hope you get my point.
Kspraydad @ May 8th 2008 11:21PM
Does Kaz work for iSuppli too?!
adolson @ May 8th 2008 11:43PM
What kind of "fanboy" site are you running here? Get a decent headline every once in a while and act your name - I say you rename this one to "Kaz Is Captain Obvious" or something along those lines. Come on, do I have to do your job for you? Be a real fanboy already!
Bishop99999999 @ May 9th 2008 1:03AM
Ya know, the PS3 seems to do better when Sony isn't running their mouths off, so maybe Hirai should just go ahead and shut the hell up, lest he tempt fate.
Vanillaware Intern @ May 9th 2008 1:16AM
Hey! Kaz Hirai!
Before the PS3 can "Reign supreme". It has to defeat one of it's own family members. And that's the mighty PS2. (lol) How can the PS3 reign supreme, if it can even beat it's own older brother or sister. (lol) The PS2 is still selling and more games are being released for it. (Persona 3 FES and coming soon, Persona 4)
The PS2 has the better games. (RPGs! RPGs! RPGs!) There aren't any good games on the PS3,IMO. I'll stick to playing my PS2/PSP and Wii/NDS. (The Xbox 360 is a piece of shit)
But i might have to buy a PS3. I want to play Disgaea 3.
Kenology @ May 9th 2008 12:53PM
Sorry folks, but anyone who think the PS3 will be number 1 this generation is purely delusional.
Joeman @ May 22nd 2008 12:34PM
Well, the PS3 sales are rising. And the US is the only place where the 360 outsells the PS3 and the wii is generally being bought by nursing homes, so no one takes it seriously.
tastesfruity @ May 9th 2008 1:16PM
well i'd be worried if he didnt
