Motorstorm Pacific Rift gameplay vids surface [Update]
Why Sony finds a need to make CGI trailers for the Motorstorm series is beyond us. The first game looked great, but jaded gamers were bitter about the misleading quality of these CGI trailers. When Pacific Rifts teaser trailer came out, pre-rendered CGI echoed the same sentiments.
So, why does Sony bother? We're watching Gamersyde's videos of Motorstorm: Pacific Rift and they look so incredible. Sure, it doesn't compete with pre-rendered footage, but it looks like a real graphical improvement over the already-stunning Motorstorm. And that says a lot.
[Update: Direct-feed HD footage from PlayStation Day keynote now available on GameVideos.]

yeah someone tell them that they are loved.. they must all be middle children or something!!!
adolson @ May 7th 2008 11:45AM
Well, hopefully the gameplay is as good as the graphics... Not like last time.
Mike @ May 8th 2008 10:19PM
Soz m8 its still the same old graf-x, controls (/ Over) gameplay. lAwls
Topher07 @ May 7th 2008 3:53PM
Asside from the impressive graphics if they are going to feature vegetation in this game then they are going to have to allow it to be destructible. If a Monster Truck runs over a few bushes those bushes are not going to exist afterwards. Its kind of lame that the truck just passes through bushes or vines and leaves them fully intact. Hopefully this is just because its a technology preview.
Racing games are not rocket science, and when they can't get realistic physics or destructible environments I don't care how good it looks, its just not next-gen IMHO.
frankym @ May 7th 2008 12:12PM
Looks cool...however, those killZone 2 videos are unbelievable. ...best graphics ever on any platform...just stunning!!
John @ May 7th 2008 12:20PM
I hope it was just the frame rate of the camera because those wheels weren't spinning for most of the video.
James @ May 7th 2008 12:20PM
I have to say, the graphics shown here, on the KZ2 footage and also on the Mirror's Edge video show that developers are now pushing the PS3 hard. All three are great looking and in different ways too. Most impressed.
adolson @ May 7th 2008 1:47PM
Isn't Mirror's Edge also going to Xbox 360?
erich @ May 7th 2008 12:48PM
Point of fact, the game is called Motorstorm; Pacific RIFT not STORM.
toefer @ May 7th 2008 12:50PM
I'm going to blame the video for why this game didn't that impressive to me. Motorstorm 1 looked great, I think, so I imagine this one can only be better.
FrankTheCrank @ May 7th 2008 1:55PM
The PS3 is finally starting to show it's REAL horsepower. Everybody seems to be using HDR(high dynamic range) lighting and this is where you need the extra horsepower. The HDR in GT5P is what gives that game it's REALISTIC look.
Motorstorm 2 looks incredible.
It's these graphical features that will set the PS3 apart from the 360. Mark my words.
Popfrogs @ May 7th 2008 2:09PM
Well, that and the advanced physics and animation available if the SPE's are used properly. We've already seen one or two devs take advantage of these features.
FrankTheCrank @ May 7th 2008 2:17PM
Agreed.
I'm really looking forward to seeing an ultra kinetic game where they use the Cell to throw allot of objects around the screen. You see these kind of physics displayed in LittleBigPlanet.
David @ May 7th 2008 3:53PM
I most say that I'm not impressed by that video. It looks nice but the truck doesn't seem to have any sort of real interaction with the environment. Heck as John said the tires didn't seem to be moving at all. I want to see the tires tearing up the grass and soil as the truck plows through the environment. I would also like for there to be more of an impact when you hit other cars. In Burnout when I hit another car with the side of my car it really feels as if I was hitting them whereas in the first motorstorm that sense of "impact" just wasn't there...and it seems it'll be the same here again. (I don't know how to describe it but Motorstorm felt too floaty...as if the cars didn't have "real" weight)
Anyway the game is early and it'll hopefully get better when it releases. I really hope so since this series has a lot of potential and I really want to like this series. Hopefully it'll be a must buy.
Hyams @ May 7th 2008 3:42PM
Hey, I got thanked!
I'm FAMOUS! (and also currently druink)
blake @ May 8th 2008 10:43PM
Me too!.... Wait did i just post that?
VanDan @ May 7th 2008 3:49PM
Well a least the guy talking during the video said there would be split screen mult player
Cody @ May 7th 2008 4:29PM
Like David said about it feeling too floaty, this is obvious in the video. Thats the only thing that bothered me: unrealistic gravity. That aside, this looks great for pre-alpha.
Mike @ May 7th 2008 6:45PM
this game will be a waste of your money its a rental at best since it supports split screen now its still the same old grafix over controls/gameplay.
Nick @ May 7th 2008 6:54PM
:P Looks like Wii ExciteTruck, seriously. The floaty truck, the lack of dirt-trails under the wheels. What are those puffs of dust under the wheels? Ghosts? This is not ghostbusters, where's the tracks of dirt? Try again, make this a next-gen game guys.
JerJerBinks @ May 9th 2008 11:49AM
You might want to go back and see where it said "Pre-Alpha 40% complete."
Dumbass.
Consolcwby @ May 7th 2008 8:33PM
As anyone can now see from the above comments, games that are not even near release (or even close to the final beta stages) should NOT be seen by the public. The typical person has no way to discern what the final product will be like - much less what concerns are about the game at this point. (Andrew, you wondered why Sony uses pre-rendered video for this series - I hope the above answered your queries.)
I mean, seriously, this game was just announced a few weeks ago, and people expect it to be completely polished with everything up and running... to me, this looks more like a level test using the previous engine tweaked - which is fine at this point in time during development. It's only supposed to give you a general idea of what to expect.
Mike @ May 8th 2008 12:28AM
trust me dude this games ganna be crap the first one was, and this ones ganna be also the same floaty gravity was in the first one even if this game is in Alfa its what its going to be like just go rent the first one and ull see what im talking about
Eggy @ May 9th 2008 5:32AM
Completely agree with you Consolcwby. The entire time of the video it was saying 40% complete. Still some monkeys complain about details.
Matt B @ May 9th 2008 11:49AM
I was just coming in to say the same thing CC. Pre-alpha and no or minimal post processing effects.
For all the MS haters, other than the load times, MS was a fun ass game.
Ty @ May 8th 2008 11:15AM
The gameplay looks just as frustrating as the first one, I'll pass.
Reymo @ May 8th 2008 10:26PM
@Mike
Can you prove it? What crystal ball are you looking into? I dont doubt for a fact that even if the game is good your obvious hate for the game probably is beyond helping. Thats fine, everyone has a right to their opinion but don't tell any one else to follow you in your distaste for Motorstorm for what ever bad experience you had.
(moving along)
I think what they are doing with this game so early on in the making is great. Foliage..water..the whole mechanic behind water cooling your engine..but slowing your car as well. Thats exactly what needs to be brought to the table. I really cant wait to see the on going development and the final product. I think this time around the game play aspects will very much compliment the graphical side of this IP.
Maverick Saturn @ May 8th 2008 11:12PM
Looks incredible! I don't care what any of the haters in here have to say.
Wah, wheels not spinning? Excite truck, wii etc etc etc blah blah
This is great, hands down, it really stands up to the likes of dirt and goes beyond that. They really have taken everything into consideration, its not perfect, but theres nothing there a patch or motostorm 3 can't fix.
Untill a better no rule other then to win racing game comes out and matches this, anyone who has a nitpick to point out should really consider becoming a game developer themselves, because I'm curious to see what they can do.
What sold me is damage, saw it in the trailer, and thought, if its not in the game, "Ima gunna blow a fuse!" But its there! Yay!
The original Motostorm suffered from lots of flaws, but it was still better then most games on the market at the time and it still looks and plays well. This is just and improvement. Theres no dull colours, everything looks vibrant and exciting.
Im impressed now, but like I said before, lets just see what happens when it comes out, trailers are one thing, playing it myself is another.
uh-oh polio @ May 9th 2008 12:12AM
you guys need to stop complaining, Have any of you noticed where it says Pre-alpha 40%?
Yea
im impressed, hope it turns out great
koehler83 @ May 9th 2008 8:37AM
I'll be happy with just the addition of splitscreen multiplayer and a major reduction in loading times.
Everything else is just butter to me. Looking forward to it.
RyGy @ May 9th 2008 1:01PM
This game looks fantastic. I never bought the first one because of the lack of game modes, the sequel looks like it's shaping up a lot better.

CM @ May 9th 2008 1:22PM
The first Motorstorm was good. I loved how they continued to update it after the release. This one leaves me feeling kind of "meh" though. The water "looks" only okay but the water effects are pretty bad and makes the game seem dated. I wish it looked more like GTAIV (heck, good water effects have been around since Baulder's Gate: Dark Alliance or WaveRace64).
