Kojima insists he's not disappointed with MGS4

Hideo Kojima clarified on his latest blog podcast that he's absolutely not disappointed with Metal Gear Solid 4, despite earlier reports of his dissatisfaction. He's just trying to be modest about the game. He put the blame on his words getting lost in translation as the reason why his views were taken askew. This is always the usual suspect as the Japanese language and culture doesn't always clearly come out the same when put into English words.
We won't go too far into this but in short Kojima says he doesn't like to brag; so he's downplaying his thoughts, keeping in line with Japanese humility. Whether Kojima is being too humble or not, gamers should still listen first to their own opinions on the game. We've seen the game footage over the years and listened to the news reports, and we're pretty sure we like what we see. Has a previous MGS game failed to

Haha, Yoon was really sleeping on this one. I emailed him a link to this story 6 hours ago.

Oh damn. For never having been there and never having taken any class on it, I know a lot about Japanese culture. I totally called this one in my comment on the old ps3fanboy article for when he said that stuff: http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/04/19/hideo-kojima-bashes-metal-gear-solid-4-is-he-being-too-hard-o/

Get a life! Who cares who said it first? Maybe somebody else called it a minute before you did in another forum or e-mail. Go back to elementary school if it's so important to get recognition for being the first one. Were you also posting all these annoying "first post"-posts in the past?
Jason B. @ May 12th 2008 6:03PM
I think his "disappointment" lies in the fact that he couldn't do everything he wanted to do with his last installment of MGS.

I don't know if you post at VGEVO.com or not (the site of the PSNation podcast) but someone regarded you as to explaining the culteral differences.
Lol, I actually knew you stated this all along.

Well I know I won't be disappointed by the quality of MGS4, Kojima has never let me down so far with any of his games, I really don't think this one will either.
I have an unexpected problem though.
Metal Gear Online.
Never played an online game in my life before this (and i've been gaming since the C64 days lol) but played the Beta solidly (no pun intended) all last week for hours a day (right up until the Euro servers kicked us off on Sunday night at the end).
I have become addicted to MGO when I never thought I would do, so heres the problem, for the biggest MGS fanboy that I am, I think that MGO will be the first into my PS3 on June 12th and not MGS4, but don't want stages or anything spoiled from the main game. Bloody dilemma lol!
ComicShaman @ May 12th 2008 6:10PM
Kojima is a perfectionist. Perfectionists are never satisfied with their work and always striving to do better. That's what I got out of his first statement, and I'm pretty sure that's all there is to his "disappointment."
I think this game will knock our socks off.
JoJo @ May 13th 2008 9:47AM

I think he has no reason to be disappointed. Glad to hear he is not! Because this game looks amazing!
Also, in the last sentence "has a mgs failed to dissapoint? No."
should be changed to a word like "amaze?"
Cuz the other way makes it seem bad lol.
JAH75157 @ May 12th 2008 6:33PM
"Has a previous MGS game failed to disappoint? No."
isn't that quote from the blog post saying that a MGS game has always succeeded to disappoint?
^I'd already written this before i saw your post so i'm just going to attach it to yours.
mathab @ May 12th 2008 6:46PM
Hey, thanks for that! I missed that one when I was proofreading. Fixed. haha. *headdesks*
Kevin @ May 12th 2008 6:20PM
Well he's probably following Japanese humility as stated in the article. And he probably sees every single mistake or something he wanted to put it.
Like.
No that's not right.
Oh and that's were the giant tank was supposed to be.
Right.
Also thinking to himself.
"THANK GOD we didn't go with 360"
BowserUSC @ May 12th 2008 10:09PM
This game is pretty much the only reason I bought a PS3 (besides hotshots of course).
dragonric @ May 12th 2008 10:56PM
I m SO tired of hearing how Kojima is disappointed with MGS4 and MSGO.. he needs to SHUT UP.. It's all a load of crap.. and GT.com needs to stop telling us about it.. He has been disappointed with every single MGS game.. OMG I'm SICK SICK SICK of hearing this load of horse manure!!
dragonric @ May 12th 2008 10:44PM
If he is so damned disappointed with it.. then why doesn't he just take it off the f'ing market.. geezus.. what a crock!
Consolcwby @ May 13th 2008 9:43AM
I have to do this... an on-again off-again rant. Sorry, but this shit sticks in my craw like you can't believe...
You know, this story is interesting for several reasons, one - because it's been apparent to most people that Kojima was only being humble, and two - Kotaku's obvious racist take on this subject. Months ago, I used to read Kotaku (not so much anymore - once every few months), and I noticed a trend of PS/Sony bashing that makes X360FB look conservative. Kotaku's message is on this story is apparent: http://kotaku.com/5008653/americans-brag-ps3-no-letdown-kotaku-is-wrong
But why is a community 'blog' site so unabashedly one sided?... so I got curious and found (here: http://whois.domaintools.com/kotaku.com ) that Kotaku is owned by markmonitor.com - so I went there and found their partnership page: http://markmonitor.com/Alliances (AOL notwithstanding, I mean look at the top of this blog - will I be banned here for saying this? Probably...)
If you look at the first entry, it explains everything. And it sickens me. I was banned for exposing an outright lie at Kotaku about the PS3... These sites, this one included, are supposed to be about opinion, fun, lighthearted stuff. Yet, as soon as someone disagrees with an opinion - boom! BANNED. As a libertarian, it offends me that the net - the last bastion of freedom - has become nothing more than a shilling ground for corporations, blaming each other, flaming each other, and basically ruining just about everything they get their greedy hands into. I guess what I'm trying to say is this: I liked this hobby better when it was about the games and how they played, instead of the politics of consumerism and personality. More to the point: all media is becoming infected by this bull, and I for one am losing hope that people will retain their ability to think for themselves.
End of rant.
Brodie-san @ May 13th 2008 6:16AM
It's just a Japanese trait to downplay your abilities/creations etc. As a student of Japanese I can tell you now that it's near impossible to actually accept any accolades without saying "Oh no, I'm not that good/My game is quite bad/I smell terrible."
Kojima is not disappointed in his game. Kojima is Japanese. There's a difference.
drdre74 @ May 13th 2008 9:36AM
iF ITS AS GOOD as the beta for the online then its gonna be great. MGSO Beta looked amazing. The graphics were top notch. Even better than Uncharted and that was a amazing looking game in its self.
