Watch Kojima play the first ten minutes of Metal Gear Solid 4
Metal Gear Mania continues today. Series creator and director Hideo Kojima presented the first ten minutes of Metal Gear Solid 4 to the press today, and the folks at 1UP were able to capture it off-screen. This all Japanese-footage includes the intro movie, but goes directly into gameplay. More than the visuals, the audio is what haunts us the most. The score pulls on the heartstrings, while the sounds of war sound absolutely brutal ... as they should.

Is it just me or did anyone else notice that Easter egg in the last 3 minutes?
Joeman @ May 13th 2008 3:11PM
MG is famous for its easter eggs. Expect a lot.
Byron517 @ May 13th 2008 2:56PM

True_Darknight @ May 13th 2008 3:02PM

Now that looked so freaking sweet!!! I needs to play now.
How about they release the first 10 GB!!!
James @ May 13th 2008 3:03PM
When I see the devs playing, I always expect it to go like Neo fighting a bunch of Agents in one of the latter Matrix movies. Still, pretty cool...
Pistol Platypus @ May 13th 2008 3:10PM
WIN.
fersis @ May 13th 2008 3:16PM
At 11:41-11:42 ,on the cardboard box that says 'No place for hideo', there is a little cute (Hideo-san?) character.
dwills1920 @ May 13th 2008 3:26PM
this game is gonna be 2 sweet. looks amazing.
Jason Rhyne @ May 13th 2008 3:28PM
I will not watch it. It's like going to the strip club then going home alone.
JerJerBinks @ May 13th 2008 3:35PM
Is it wrong that as a Sony advocate I have absolutely no interest in this game? I want to see it do well and sell consoles, but I cant make myself interested in the videos or in purchasing this game. Maybe its becasue the only MG games I have played were MGS2 and MG:Portable Ops, but all i feel is 'meh' when I see MGS4 news.
It would have to be one of the greatest games ever created for me to buy it at this point. I guess we'll see in a few short weeks.
r0n @ May 13th 2008 4:37PM
Why is it wrong not to like it? Although it is such a huge franchise for sony, I'm curious what games you bought the PS3 to play?
Syn @ May 13th 2008 7:19PM
You're not the only one. This game doesn't appeal to me at all. Just because thousands of people like it, doesn't me someone won't. I've played every MGS game, and portable. I said the samething after the XPlay Video, and people jumped on me saying it was because it was a bad video. But even after this video, still looks boring. Assassins Creed was so bad, yet for others they really liked it. Same situation.
JerJerBinks @ May 13th 2008 8:42PM
@ r0n
Well, I definitely love Gran Turismo and the God of War series, plus there were tons of PS2 exclusives like GTA, R&C, Jak, and DMC that I used to play. I have never been a FF or MGS fan, but in the grand scheme of things, those franchises do not 'make" the Playstation brand. I could have gone with an Xbox, but that goes directly against my dislike of Microsoft (I work in IT) and their software+business practices. PlayStation has always been my console of choice, and as long as they continue to make consoles I will be their customer.
MJ @ May 14th 2008 11:06AM
You know JerJer, that has to be one of the most rational comments i've seen on why someone doesn't like a particular game (most go along the lines of mgs sux blah blah shitty game etc).
Course there's nothing wrong with not being excited for MGS if it isn't your type of game!
As a huge MGS fan, would be interesting to hear your take on what you think the gameplay, graphics and sound are like (even though you aren't buying it).
tristan88 @ May 13th 2008 3:44PM
wow. i have never seen a game look so much like a movie before. that was a pretty engrossing 13 minutes. this game really does deserve the hype. so damn impressive.
Damian @ May 13th 2008 3:48PM
Can't watch it! I knew the spoiler of MGS2 (i.e. Raiden being the lead in most of it) before I bought that and the ending of MGS3 before I finished it (admittedly because I took too long to finish it). For MGS4 I'm staying off all sites that could carry spoilers from its release until I complete it!
Jimmijam @ May 13th 2008 4:17PM
Looks awesome... but where's the game play?
Popfrogs @ May 13th 2008 4:57PM
You get to that later. I imagine they'll slowly teach you the controls like they usually do so you're not overwhelmed. This video already shows you how to acquire a weapon and equip it as well as how the octocamo works.
Justin @ May 13th 2008 6:33PM
you do realize...that thats 13 minutes...of a 30+ hour game?
Jimmijam @ May 13th 2008 7:22PM
Whoa, wait a minute. 30 hours? I did not know that!
mavbsbll21 @ May 14th 2008 3:52PM
50GB Game!
Sauvage @ May 13th 2008 4:56PM
This may well be the first game that makes me cry.
knightsray @ May 13th 2008 4:47PM
actually this video wasn't very impressive. the audio in the beginning was great though i really liked that! the graphics though don't look to be any better than COD4. the video as a whole was just like ehh maybe i'll rent it lol! i'm sure it's great but certainly not one of the best ever! just my opinion don't go crazy...if anyone can show me any other videos to possibly sway my opinion then that'd be cool! right now i'm just like wow all that hype and this is it??
MJ @ May 14th 2008 3:47AM
The thing with mgs games is in all the little details (the ice cubes, magazines/books, shooting watermelons and boxes of potatos in kitchens in mgs2 for example) so even though on the surface it may look a little like cod4 (personally i think it looks better) its those little graphical things that really push the kojima games.
Plus it's hard to get the level of detail across on a low resolution, small windowed video on a blog site, soon as you get it on the screen at home it will blow you away.
Happy_man @ May 13th 2008 6:05PM
That was so full of awesome and I simply can not wait for this game to come out. Also the story is what makes this game truly unique and I for one have no problem spending $60 dollar's plus tax for this game on day one. System seller for sure.
Dwag @ May 13th 2008 6:31PM
Looking great I'm glad I know its coming on time hopefully my buddy Square Enix can get that FFXIII game down easy
Bucfann @ May 13th 2008 8:28PM
Meh. Not that impressed. Im glad some of you are pretty excited about it though.
Efeez1986 @ May 14th 2008 2:07AM
Anybody who doesn't like Metal Gear Solid has bad taste in gaming. LOL
benny boy @ May 14th 2008 6:25AM
Will people need to know the MGS story so far for this game??
Becasue I've never played an MGS game and I don't really have any idea what has happened and who these characters are?
sproutdaddy @ May 14th 2008 11:18AM
Well, I'm with others in that I hope this continues to sell PS3s and expand the user base, which should lead to even more great games, but I can't see anything in this intro that is all that exciting. I think the Metal Gear games are an acquired taste, with all their over-the-top dialogue and silly character names. The setup looks very linear (he couldn't jump over those boxes and seemed to go down a very prescribed path) and I suspect the movement controls will be the somewhat cumbersome - or at least they've always seemed taht way to me.
I'll probably rent it - eventually - to see how the graphics and gameplay hold up to they hype, but I haven't played a Kojima game in a long time that matched the level of hype surrounding it. And after the 10/10 hysteria everywhere associated with GTAIV (which is an excellent game but possesses plenty of flaws), I'm not willing to trust reviewers to tell me whether it's worth it. It just doesn't look as groundbreaking as the years of hype would justify.
MattDark @ May 14th 2008 12:45PM
Pretty sweet, and doesnt show anything we hvent seen already.
Now it just reminds me that I have to wait for it still! :(
Iridium @ May 14th 2008 1:02PM
I love MGS games for the story and characters more than the gameplay. The gameplay isn't really what MGS is all about. it is about an all around 20-30 hour entertainment package. That is why the game is worth $60.
Sorry but as good as COD4 was it was worth $25. There was so little in the way of story and campaign that it should have just been sold as a multiplayer shooter.
If you buy MGS4 and play it all the way through you really got your $60 worth. While MGS4 will stand on its own if you've never played a MGS game you will be a bit lost on the overarching story details like the Patriots and what Metal Gears are.
JimyD @ May 14th 2008 6:37PM
You're comparing apples with oranges. The MGS series is a lot different than CoD and they shouldn't even be compared with each other. Gamers buy CoD games for the intense action, not the storyline. As you stated, the MGS series is all about the story and characters as well as decent action.
Regardless, CoD4 is well worth whatever price you paid for it since it offers an intense single and multiplayer experience.
I'm not a big MGS fan but I thought the video was pretty impressive and it's enough to push me over the fence on giving the game a shot.
The_Doctor @ May 15th 2008 2:49AM
Nice video. I just hate how in almost every MGS video we get a shot of Snake's ass in his skin-tight gear. I'll be the first to admit that he's got a good figure for a 50 year old or whatever he is, but seriously c'mon!
On another note, the music is amazing. Does anyone know who does the voice acting for Japanese Snake?
