Metal Gear Gunmetal PS3 available for pre-order next week
The Gunmetal Limited Edition Metal Gear PS3 will be available for pre-order next Monday, exclusively on the Konami official website. The production run will be rather small, so those that are interested will most likely have to act fast. Available for $599.99, the package includes a gray 40GB PS3 system, matching DualShock 3 controller, and the Limited Edition version of Metal Gear Solid 4 (game, documentary Blu-ray disc, official soundtrack). Considering you're getting the 40GB PS3 (which costs $399.99), you're paying much more than retail for this package -- but that's the price you pay for fandom.
A regular Metal Gear bundle, which includes a standard black 80GB console, will also be available for $499.99.

Where the hell did the 80GB's go?!
Mike @ May 15th 2008 11:19PM

Mikezula @ May 15th 2008 3:34PM
Why do I have the feeling half of these are gonna show up on e-bay? Damn scalpers.
never$$hort @ May 15th 2008 4:54PM
you know you like it... haha
RPMd70 @ May 16th 2008 6:30AM
*raises hand*
i'll be scalping for $713.43 EXACTLY.
take it or leave it. HAH
RexAcademy @ May 15th 2008 3:36PM
You neglected to mention that the gunmetal is 40GB for $599.99, while the regular bundle is 80GB for $100 less.
MrGuru @ May 15th 2008 3:42PM
its pretty clear on the box that its a 40 gig....
ryan @ May 15th 2008 3:47PM
40gb gunmetal PS3 with MGS4 casing on it is fandom.
a 40gb gunmetal PS3 with MGS4 casing and NO ABILITY to play the ORIGINAL MGS 1,2,3 is not fandom.
Kurt @ May 15th 2008 5:19PM
"a 40gb gunmetal PS3 with MGS4 casing and NO ABILITY to play the ORIGINAL MGS 1,2,3 is not fandom."
Incorrect, you will be able to play MGS1 on it ^^
40GBs can still play PS1 games afterall..
ryan @ May 15th 2008 8:37PM
i stand corrected. doesn't make it any better for the fans that want an all in one.
android @ May 15th 2008 3:46PM
wow who the hell would pay for that! you can't even play the old mg games on that!
ryan @ May 15th 2008 3:50PM
exactly. no real fan would want something that can't play the original games.
yet, a crazed psychotic fan would buy anything metal gear related anyway...
Dehshizknight @ May 15th 2008 5:19PM
Apparently the Japanese because the pre-orders for these special editions already sold out over there.
reson8er @ May 15th 2008 3:46PM
Ya know, even if I had the money to spend, I'd still not get it b/c its a 40gig model.
With that high of a mark-up they should have made it an 80.
Oh well, at least I wont regret not having this now lol
Gaucho @ May 15th 2008 3:50PM
Must. Try. To. Control. Rabid. Fandomonium. From. Occurring.
IMO I couldn't care if this were a 1GB system. I would gut this thing and put the innards of my PS3 inside. If the Kojima Logo is anywhere on this thing I wouldn't even use it, I would just make a hole in the box and have my way with it.
. . . I uh, get this way with only MGS games and PES games. . .
ModeMan101 @ May 15th 2008 3:54PM
If this had been the 80GB model, I'd have paid the extra $100. As it stands, I'm going for the regular 80GB pack. Shame, I was looking forward to not worrying about greasy thumbprints all over the system.
Nate @ May 15th 2008 4:14PM
Don't put your greasy thumbs all over it ;)
The only time I touch my PS3 is when I have to add or remove music game dongles (damn non-bluetooth crap).... and even that I rarely do, since I so rarely play GH3 these days.
Pip @ May 15th 2008 4:02PM
I... dont understand. Why are they even selling the 40GB model? Awesome games are still coming out on the PS2! Who wants a PS3 that can't play PS2 games?
This generation is so dang frustrating. I'll be getting the normal 80GB version. Cripes. Ruin my day.
Nate @ May 15th 2008 4:08PM
Wow, that's really crazy. I didn't notice the MORE expensive one was the 40 gig and the less expensive one is the 80. The 80 gig a steal... you're basically paying $40 for 40 extra gigs of HD storage (more than doubling your free space on a new machine), backwards compatibility, 2 extra USB slots, and the memory card reader (and SA-CD support, if that matters to anyone). I actually can't imagine anyone *not* wanting to spend the extra $40 on that, especially when the bundled game is MGS4. That ain't no spiderman blu-ray they're throwing in there.
BlackFreefall @ May 15th 2008 4:12PM
So basically we are paying more for less functions. This is truly a limited edition. Limited in fuctions that is.
kentuckyfried @ May 15th 2008 7:28PM
As much as I'd like to burn money on this, it doesn't make any sense to buy it.
Luckily I've already got the limited and regular editions of MGS4 on pre-order.
jared @ May 15th 2008 4:48PM
does anyone know if the 80gb model will be available in all stores, or just places like gamestop? also, i'm a little confused with the backwards compatability. do i have to buy or download anything special to run PS1/PS2 games on the 80gb model? i know the special chips are missing in the 40gb and will be avoiding that one.
ModeMan101 @ May 15th 2008 8:33PM
As far as I know, the 80GB are going to be available everywhere. Also, the new 80GB units don't have the PS2 Emotion Engine chipset, they do their PS1/PS2 emulation purely through software rather than hardware now. Whether that means the list of compatible games is less, I don't know... but you don't have to download anything.
never$$hort @ May 15th 2008 4:57PM
gunmetal=ugly
Zombie Huggles @ May 15th 2008 5:42PM
If I'm not mistaken (and apparently I was about Solid Snake's Genetics...) ALL PS3s play ps1 games. The 40 gig, on the other hand, is the only that does not play PS2 games. As far as differences between 80 and 60 (Kiss-kiss, I love you sweety) is the 60 has actual ps2 hardware while 80 comes installed with emulation software to run most PS2 games.
But that's how I understand it. I have a 60 gig so that I wouldn't have to worry about this sh-crap.
pavs @ May 15th 2008 7:22PM
you are 100% correct. We, the 60GB owners get rewarded for being some of the early costumers and buying the system before the price drop.
The 80GB people get an almost full B/C, but not 99.9%, somewhere around 85 i think. THey get that for paying an extra hundred bucks.
and the 40GB people get very limited is none at all Ps2 B/C and most of the PS1.
Someone else asked about this, no you do not need to instal or download anything on the 80GB system in order to play old games/
tony @ May 15th 2008 5:36PM
is the 40gb going to have backwards compatibility???
if not im probaly going to by the 80gb...
(and i really wanted the gunmetal ps3 :( )
Matt @ May 15th 2008 6:48PM
And yet, here in Australia, we ONLY get the choice of a 40Gb model.....ever
ModeMan101 @ May 15th 2008 8:34PM
That's reason enough to emigrate if ever I heard one!
iLLness @ May 15th 2008 6:51PM
I just preordered the MGS4 80 gb ps3 at FYE for those looking to.Counting the days!!!
Popfrogs @ May 15th 2008 7:39PM
Konami is kinda retarded for doing this. Maybe you just can't buy an 80GB anywhere in the world but the US. Too bad...I think the gunmetal is sexy but 1. I already own a launch 60GB and 2. paying extra for a paint color and no BC = dumb.
Justin @ May 15th 2008 8:17PM
As retarded as it is...I'm pretty sure they'll still be sold out in the blink of an eye.
Popfrogs @ May 15th 2008 9:43PM
I bet there are more Japanese collectors that'll take another shot at it. But for most US buyers, there are too many drawbacks at that price. No DS3 either..wtf.
cellulitis @ May 16th 2008 1:58AM
Uh...it has a DS3...look again
anthonyjh @ May 15th 2008 7:20PM
Damn. I've bought up every little piece of Metal Gear I could get my hands on over the last couple years, but I just can't justify that price. Especially considering I already own a PS3.
importuner923 @ May 16th 2008 3:00PM
What about getting your ps3 painted gunmetal without buying a new system. I would post the link of the site that would paint it for you, but I can't remember what the site is called.
foxdie @ May 16th 2008 5:01PM
What if Konami is making it seem like its going to be REAL limited, but really isn't. Halo 3 legendary comes to mind.
haliotis81 @ May 17th 2008 2:20AM
This is a rip off. Sony is gambling on MGS4 to sell PS3. So sad to see it. I'm a metal gear solid fan also, but I am wondering to buy PS3 for this only game.
Cheezr @ May 19th 2008 5:39PM
well it is may 19th and after 5pm in the eastern time zone and the system is not up for pre-order on the konami website, so where is the beef?
