SOCOM Confrontation: new screens showcase action, UI
Our coverage of Judge's Day games ends for now with the latest batch of SOCOM Confrontation screens. Here, you'll be able to see some more shots of the game in action. Heck, we even have images of the game's UI. Promising up to 32 players online, this PSN title looks to bring back everything players loved in the original game ... and then some.
Like Warhawk before it, the game will release as both a downloadable and retail title, and will be supported through a number of DLC packs post-release. Considering how successful the SOCOM franchise was on PS2, we're pretty sure that there are going to be many, many people lining up to play Confrontation when it releases this

I was kind of hoping to see a Tiger Woods style customization system, but that's good enough I suppose.

There are 2 Socom games Confrontation and Socom IV.
Confrontation is online and Socom IV is well just Socom.
I'm going for Socom IV.I doubt I'll buy Confrontation.

I loved SOCOM on the PS2, but the Alpha (I think) footage has me a little worried. It doesn't seem like they are doing anything to make themselves competitive against the likes of COD4 (The aiming system is still putting a tiny dot over an enemy and clicking the button, or atleast it was in that 1up preview). Then again, they may have just made a decision early on that going up against COD4 is impossible, and that they'd try for an entirely new approach. We shall see.

I could be wrong but...
Isn't SOCOM a tactical based shooter? I also thought the game was 3rd person..although these pictures could be the spectator cams...(like in COD4)
I might need to get some sleep but aren't these 2 games different from the start anyway?
Please correct me if I am wrong my friend.

COD4 is very tactical aswell (just not on public servers. Getting strangers to cooperate is impossible), but that's not what I meant really. I meant that they don't seem to be doing anything to compete with COD4. Where COD4 added functionality that made it somewhat of an MMOFPS (Namely the rank system) and perks (enhancements like steady aim, not showing up on radar etc) Socom seems to be doing exactly what it's been doing for years. Without innovation of any sort, it's hard to think that an FPS will do well, and let's face it, any FPS that launches today, needs to get a good portion of the COD4 fan-base onboard to be successful.
I realize that my fears about this game are based on an alpha build, and probably an early alpha build at that, but I can't help but be nervous that the game won't do very well (meaning there would be few players online, which means few matches to choose from, which ultimately equals a terrible experience). Oh well, it's early, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now. I do love me some Socom
TheEnd187 @ May 21st 2008 6:04PM
Socom isn't a FPS.

COD4 is arcade even on hardcore settings. SOCOM is not. They're are completely different games.
It's like comparing Rainbow Six Vegas with SWAT 4.
anthonyjh @ May 19th 2008 12:40AM
CoD4 is just like CS:S. A pure arcade shooter dressed up in realistic skivvies.
Every multiplayer game is essentially tactical, so I assume you really mean realistic.
recon @ May 17th 2008 2:58PM
Exactly, SOCOM is not COD4, so stop comparing. SOCOM already has its fan-base. As far as perks, this is more of a simulation rather than arcade-style, so you probably wont be seeing things such as power ups.
to Jtenma, Confrontation will give you 2 camera options, first-person and third-person views. It was originally suppose to be only first-person, but they have since changed that, by offering a third-person view.
