You had to have known in some area of your brain that
Haze would come with a mandatory install. It's almost a trend and almost always a hassle -- especially when it comes to hard drive space (we're so very sorry, 20GB PS3 owners!). The size of Ubisoft's oft-delayed shooter is
going to be in the realm of 4GB's. Time to
make a sandwich, huh? Well, love it or hate it, just be ready to let the game web itself into your PS3 for a while before you get crackin' on killin' those Mantel troops. It sure would be a bummer to break it out of its shrink-wrap at a party only to make everyone wait. You've been warned.

I assure you that unlike pro Sony news, this will be in Joystiq in no time....
Paul (PSN: heypaul) @ May 17th 2008 6:10PM
I have. It seems to go off if you have certain potentially offensive words. You don't actually have to confirm it in your email, one of the staff just has to approve it. I've had my posts pop up a few hours later with all the dramatic emphasis neutered before. Let's see if "neuter" sets it off...
Paul (PSN: heypaul) @ May 17th 2008 6:14PM
Oops, that's a reply to Noshino's next post.
Da @ May 17th 2008 7:34PM
lol, yeah, there is a PS3fanboy staff member that spends the entire day sitting, waiting for people to make posts so he can censor them personally.
Noshino @ May 17th 2008 12:34PM
why is it asking me to confirm my email...and why does this only happen on PS3fanboy and PSPfanboy sites....
Noshino @ May 17th 2008 12:36PM
ugh, your filters I guess, seriously guys, you should change your filters, they are archaic!
Hyams @ May 17th 2008 4:24PM
I haven't gotta confirm my posts via email.
*shrugs*
Dark Archon @ May 17th 2008 12:36PM
Just update your HDDs already -_- It's £50 for a 250GB drive... It's not the end of the world!
frankym @ May 17th 2008 12:39PM
exactly....plus, don't know what the big deal is regarding mandatory installs. They significantly cut load times and make for a much better experience. One of the PS3's strong points is the inclusion of a hard drive. get over it people
Christian @ May 17th 2008 1:08PM
I have already gotten myself a 250GB drive and am not terrible troubled by the mandatory installs, that said I wish Sony could set it up so that this stuff gets 'cached' onto your system instead of installed. That way you do not have to 'install/deinstall' once you get to the point of having a full drive. In practice I think everyone except the 20GB wouldn't even notice with such a setup as once you reach a point where old stuff gets pushed out of the cache then you probably wouldn't be playing the game anymore anyway.
FrankTheCrank @ May 17th 2008 1:13PM
I'm with Christian...
I already upgraded my 20GB PS3 to 160GB.....I'm already itching to pump that up to 250GB.
I wish Sony would allow you to dump the whole game onto the HDD....that would be sweet. I would love to dump several games and not have to get the BD every time I want to play a game.
kevin @ May 17th 2008 2:02PM
at frank dude they will never do that for many reasons like renting a game and dumping it in ur hdd or people would upload them online in iso form(remember the whole hackable psp scene) so no dont even think about it
Bellerophon @ May 17th 2008 12:38PM
I swear this game is being touted left right and centre. What's so good about it? The demo was mediocre at best. Surely attention on Haze is better deserved elsewhere.
frankym @ May 17th 2008 12:40PM
Who's touting this game?
Christian @ May 17th 2008 1:10PM
It has a good storyline and great multiplayer. Also non-symetric teams make it a more interesting multiplayer game than a lot of the other stuff. I would go so far as to say that the non-symetric teams in multiplayer makes this one of the least run-of-the-mill FPS titles out there currently.
StevenRafael @ May 17th 2008 3:31PM
You're being paranoid. I barely see any coverage for this game whatsoever. And I loved the demo, and am looking forward to it, but it's definitely not a preorder, and may not even be a first day purchase for me.
warlock7 @ May 17th 2008 12:47PM
If it's anything like the demo then this is going to be a very disappointing title. They've been saying that it's going to have Crysis level graphics and the demo looks like something from four years ago...
Noshino @ May 17th 2008 12:54PM
"They've been saying that it's going to have Crysis level graphics and the demo looks like something from four years ago..."
They didn't say anything, actually they haven't hyped the game in any way, all the said that was "WOW" was that the story was REALLY big/long
deusmecha @ May 17th 2008 12:49PM
IIRC, the demo in PSN was an alpha build.
Anyway, isn't it ironic that the PS3 is more of a computer than the 360, which was built by Microsoft?
Just saying. lol
Jez @ May 19th 2008 7:38AM
Well, no since Microsoft don't make computers - they mainly make operating systems and applications for computers.
Sony, however, do have the Vaio range of computers
OAKside @ May 17th 2008 12:54PM
OH NO! (The demo bored my pants off, BTW...)
Easo @ May 17th 2008 12:54PM
"One of the PS3's strong points is the inclusion of a hard drive."
And one of its flaws is the increasing trend of huge mandatory installs. I don't mind having the Option to install 4gb of the game on the harddrive to improve the game, but the installs never provide a significant advantage. DMC4 still had load times, each was about 2 or 3 seconds long. The same game on the 360 had 3 or 4 second load times. Im not trying to start a flame war, but this trend needs to stop.
frankym @ May 17th 2008 1:00PM
Whereas not having a hard drive would be better?
NeoRaiden @ May 17th 2008 1:38PM
Finally someone who's not stupid. Installs should NEVER be mandatory. If I want to wait 1 min between loads then let me. Usually they don't even help like you so brilliantly described.
@frankym
When the hell did he ever say no Hard drive was better? HMM??
The Aggie CEO @ May 17th 2008 4:02PM
you DO realized that the BD drive spins to slow for it to have a 3-4 Second load time........the 360 has a pretty fast DVD drive.......thats why the load time is so quick.......
matjet @ May 17th 2008 8:49PM
You do realise the 360 drive only reads about 30% faster?
And that is only with single layer 4.5GB games.
For duel-layer 9 GB discs(which is most games) the dvd drive actually reads about 25% slower than a 2x blu-ray drive. (blu-ray players have the same read speeds for singe and double layer discs).
Differences in load times then are more to do with the way a game is programmed, than the physical disc reading rates of both machines.
nailerr @ May 17th 2008 12:56PM
Well that explains their "complex streaming method" to avoid loading.
I'm still up for buying the game despite the demo, but if the demo showed anything it is that the game is far from impressive looking and as such the install cant be doing much of value. Bad practice this.
John @ May 17th 2008 12:57PM
Notice the lack of comments on this. Nobody cares that it's a 4G install. We put this crap that we download on our hard drive, and play it once. When a new game comes, if we have to, we get rid of the crap. I don't understand why someone would fret the install. If you want the game, you freakin install it.
NeoRaiden @ May 17th 2008 1:47PM
I'm sorry. I guess not everone is a douche like you who gets bored of things so quickly. What if I want to play the game later on. I would, according to you, have to delete. And then once again install and wait 20 mins to play a different game. Then I feel like playing another game the next day. Oh, don't have enough room for the install it requires, I got to delete something else. That's bad design, and you know it.
Are you seriously trying to tell me you rather have less space on your hard drive then having more space? Because that's what it basically comes down to. It's people like you who let them think it's okay to do this. Idiot's these days.
anthonyjh @ May 17th 2008 12:57PM
I didn't like Halo when I played it on the 360, and I didn't like it when I played it on the PS3. I'll buy this game when it's in the bins.
icedemon @ May 17th 2008 1:39PM
I know what you mean but your comment makes it seem like Halo 3 was on the PS3 as well. Load times don't do anything I can see. Maybe the devs of Heavenly Sword didn't have it down yet. Because that game takes forever to load even with the install on my HDD. Matter of fact I think I'll play some Halo today.
stacy daniels @ May 17th 2008 1:39PM
you played halo on a ps3?????
i see what the reviews say about haze b4 i buy, or rent job
anthonyjh @ May 18th 2008 12:05AM
No, I was saying that Haze is strikingly similar to Halo.
2Perfect @ May 17th 2008 1:44PM
wow i might just not get it at all lol. The demo wasn't that great. I mean sure, it was fun. But nothing that lived up the hype I gave it. And a mandatory install shouldn't change my opinion that much but damn... i'm out of space!
Twinturbo120 @ May 17th 2008 2:03PM
wow 4GB its not the end of the world
Meximan @ May 17th 2008 3:24PM
Actually for the 20GB PS3 owners, 4GB is a lot. Yeah, yeah "you can always buy a bigger hard drive with more space," but didn't we already pay enough to own the system? Now we have to pay more just to be able to install the damn game? That's too much. At least make these installs an option. That way those who paid a bit extra for the 80GB can choose to sacrifice some HDD space while those who bought the 20GB can still play the game but only have to go through longer load times.
If 4GB isn't the end of the world, then longer loading times aren't either. This doesn't just affect the 20GB owners either. What about those who have the 60GB owners (such as myself) who enjoy downloading PSN games? Eventually I'm going to run out of space and it's not like I can just delete those just to make room for install space and then redownload them whenever I want.
Those of you who are saying that 4GB isn't a lot, I would agree with you if installs were an option. But when one dev makes 4GB mandatory installs, the next one will have 5GB mandatory installs, then the next one will have even more. The PS3 is supposed to have a 10 year life span. If developers keep up this trend with 4GB+ mandatory installs, then not even a 250GB HDD will be enough to hold all of this installed data.
JayD-1K @ May 18th 2008 7:55AM
@max,
if a person bought a 20gb PS3 they knew what they were getting!
it's not like Sony said,"here's 2 systems for the market place but, one has a LIL suprise for you...guese which one it is?! the hdd size restaint is clearly marked on the box! how could you get mad at Sony for offering the public a slightly cheaper version (which is what every body wanted because, the 60gb was way to over priced for most) when you (not so much you but any body) knew what was coming down the line with DLC?
i meen, my 20gb x360 (i'm on my second) didn't come with the few benies the new ones have....hell at least you have a cheap option to upgrade your HDD! i went out and bought a 30$ 60gb stand alone for my 60gb PS3.
i'm just saying, we knew these things were coming....some thought ahead and others didn't.
just my thoughts on the subject
Night Elve @ May 17th 2008 2:08PM
I'm really getting tired about the "Mandatory Installs". This feature should be optional, is not that I cannot wait 5 minutes to play the game is the fact that I hate to fill my entire Hard Drive with Game data.
In no time my 60Gb will be full with Game Data with little space for videos, music and photos.
And no! buying a larger Hard Drive is not the answer, this installs should be optional.
Aaron @ May 17th 2008 2:32PM
Awesome cant wait to buy Haze! Been looking forward to it :)
Glen @ May 17th 2008 2:39PM
FOUR GIGABYTES?
That's pushing it.
Maverick Saturn @ May 17th 2008 2:47PM
Whats the largest game to install thus far?
Niko_Bellic @ May 17th 2008 4:34PM
I've got Oblivion, and the mandatory install is 4.4gb. Hope that helps; I can't imagine anything bigger than that, truth be told.
adolson @ May 17th 2008 8:22PM
I have Oblivion GOTY and my game data is sitting at 5.4GB...
held225 @ May 17th 2008 2:53PM
How does it look for the external HDD Sony was talking about? since i could really use one. I still have 38 out of 60 gigs but still an external HDD would be great
The_Punisher @ May 17th 2008 3:01PM
Just sayin....8 GB/60 GB isn't a lot to go on....
ADPolicenaut @ May 17th 2008 3:03PM
I'm really not at all bothered by this. To be honest it's nothing to write home about, just exercise a little patience and take the time to install it. It doesn't negatively affect my life in any way. Besides, surely there are more pressing issues to complain about?
Nate @ May 17th 2008 3:15PM
YUP Just upgraded my 20 GB to a 160 GB HD should be sweet!
Tom @ May 17th 2008 3:32PM
okay
1) noone is making you buy the game
2) people love to download movies, games, songs to their ps3..sure, and space runs out pretty fast....but, i've deleted games over and over, and redownloaded them..its no big deal, I deleted the gt:p save as well because i'm selling the game (so don't tell me you will keep EVERY single ps3 you will ever buy..because you won't)
its really lazy for people who can't be bothered to
a) sit through a 10 minute downloading screen
b) delete a game save they don't even play anymore
BowserUSC @ May 17th 2008 7:17PM
Why should I be required to do it when the reasoning for it is to save time? You've pointed out that it obviously doesn't unless you play only one game at a time till you beat it.
ejamer @ May 17th 2008 3:46PM
See, your PS3 is like a fridge... when you want to play a new game, just wipe that 4GB install file off and wait for 20 minutes - no problem! Large mandatory installs really aren't a problem, right guys?
;)
I know that the PS3 hard drive can be upgraded, and that's great... but will the average consumer be interested and capable of doing that? (None of the gamers here are "average" consumers.) Having a large install file for just about every big game seems like a terrible trend - and a weak compensation for slow disc read speeds if you ask me.
Any bets on how big the MGS install will be?
