Community sites are the future for Sony games
At last year's GDC keynote, former Sony head Phil Harrison talked about the importance of "Game 3.0." Inspired by "Web 2.0," this new era of gaming is focused on community-driven efforts, as seen by the currently-in-development Home and LittleBigPlanet. However, Sony's other games are going to take advantage of the "Game 3.0" mantra. Joystiq's Chris Grant listened on to a few plans in upcoming Sony first-party games.
- Killzone 2 – Killzone Liberation (PSP) already has a community, but an extensive collection of "rankings and statistics" is planned for the much-anticipated Killzone 2.
- SOCOM: Confrontation – A new community site will be launched on SOCOM.com, most likely offering web-based community functionality.
- MotorStorm: Pacific Rift – How MotorStorm will integrate with online functionality is unclear, but it will happen.
- Resistance 2 – Insomniac is working on the most ambitious plans for online integration. MyResistance.net will add "Facebook-like features," which is something we're intrigued by.

It's Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, not Rim.

Can't forget Singstar now can we... Lol!
I'm loving Sony's approach to social gaming.

We have to wait for PS9 for that. Remember the ads?

Is the single player experience dead/dying out?
browntown @ May 21st 2008 11:49AM
It is, i think its due to xbox live, developers have started paying more attention to multiplayer games. The single player experiences just don't hold up any more, just look at cod 4, wasn't that great ofline.
pavs @ May 20th 2008 10:01PM

Twinturbo120 @ May 20th 2008 10:08PM
its OK just talk to ppl and you'll find out how fun it is.
pavs @ May 20th 2008 10:35PM
C'mon we all know that we;re not big social people. thats the reason we picked the Ps3 instead of the party friendly wii or the Live Xbox.
I want single player, hard core games, MGS4 (please come sooner, you're killing me).
And to sony, "Resistance will replace Facebook" are you fucking jking me? Sure, meeting hot girls from my college will be soooo much easier while played 60 player deathmatch. NOT! Just give me the games with solid story and graphics. I have a PC, so i can get my social fix on LOTROnline or other MMOs, let the non-PC gamers buy Wii60.
Jove @ May 21st 2008 1:03AM
socializing sucks for real. go to a chat room and rude rude bastards will make your existance horrible just for the fun of it
pavs @ May 20th 2008 10:06PM
Oh yeah, Resistance will totally replace facebook in helping people meet hot nineteen year old college girls. C"mon Sony, Wake the fuck up!. We did not buy this console for socializing, hell this the least social consol out of all three. Just give us single player games and we;ll be happy,
Btw, Im having trouble posting lately, not getting the confirmation emails.
DrunkRaba @ May 21st 2008 1:02AM
Its way easy to do things like add people to your friends list on the Wii. And you know, have to type in their 400 digit code so you can play against them in individual games online, and can like, text chat with them while you race! Texting is so the cool these days!
sUKi @ May 20th 2008 10:13PM
Hopefully LittleBigPlanet will have an official Community! But i don't mind a community page where everyone can come together
Phoenix8387 @ May 20th 2008 10:35PM
Personally, I think they need to find a way to combine these communities. If they all would utilize PSN login/password that would be a big step, but finding a way to be able to access all these communities from one place would be extremely nice. Message boards work fine to a point, but there needs to be more to it. Even linking to communities that you have participated in from the message boards would be nice. I just don't get why Sony's programs always seem to be so distant and separate.
What Sony REALLY needs to do is make something more like xbox.com. Currently the gamer profile is a bit... lacking, to say the least. If they really want to step up to Web 2.0 give us an actual community site. Bring the SCEA, SCEA and SCEE sites into one. Combine the forums (obviously keeping different language forums), allow for greater PSN integration and give us more options.
sean @ May 20th 2008 10:29PM
pain has cool community. go to pain.us.playstation.com
they always make posts and talk with the people. even let them help in choosin new guys

Why does it feel like Sony is just playing catch up on the Xbox 360's online experience?
Stupid idea. I already have an Xbox 360 for this stuff, the PS3 is meant to be for serious games. I can't wait for MGS4 ... Come on Sony, just pump out some amazing exclusives with great graphics and story, instead of worrying about this dribble.
required @ May 21st 2008 12:07AM
As noted on joystiq I think they should reexamine this focus on communities as social networking fatigue is here and rapidly growing.
dustandechoes91 @ May 21st 2008 12:26AM
When are they finally going to link psn ids to the playstation.com accounts/forums? That would be a nice start. It would be really cool if you could use one login for psn, playstation.com, and all these socom and killzone sites.
Bandit @ May 21st 2008 2:32AM
OK I know I am going to be flame bait, but here goes. I just recently purchased a 52 inch TOC Samsung LCD from BestBuy, I got the offer of $100 off a PS3 as a package deal so I bought it. For the life of me I can't think of a reason to keep it, it's been a week and I still have not opened the PS3 box.
Now here is where your going to hate me, I have an Xbox 360. with GTAiV, COD4, OrangeBox, VF5, R6V, Halo3, Mass Effect, Rock Band, GHII. I play almost every day.
The only reason I can think of to keep the PS3 is Tekken 5 DR (which I'm thinking of downloading) and Tekken 6. I don't really like games like MGS (even though I've played through the earlier ones) and HATE Final Fantasy. Killzone 2 has been delayed till 2009 (I played the first one, it was OK), RFOM I personally didn't think was great (seemed kinda average to me).
I'll admit, I bought a 60 GB PS3 back when it first came out, bought and played RFOM and downloaded the Hong Kong T5DR. Took the system back after a week and traded RFOM for credit at GameStop. The last straw was while playing RFOM and having the bluetooth resynchronize watching my guy spin in a circle (is this still an issue?). I also dislike how Asia gets content way before the US (did they really have to wait that long to release Tekken to other territories?).
To keep it I am kinda thinking maybe Warhawk (is it really good, i.e. better than Frontlines: Fuel of War) and the yet to be released Socom?
Really, what are your experiences? I'd like the honest opinion of those who have both systems. I really want to give the system a chance, I've had my issues with MS (I'm on my fourth 360), but the games are great.
Should I Keep it? What is the real advantage over the 360? Like I said, please respond only if you have both systems.
marauder800 @ May 21st 2008 5:36PM
Wow, you're a little off topic there, but whatever. I have both systems, and although my PS3 gets almost no play right now I'm going to hang on to it. There are a couple of exclusives coming up that interest me, and I intend to get Soul Caliber for the PS3 because of Sony's superior D-pad. I think the PS3 is going to get better when Sony gets off their asses and delivers in-game XMB, for starters. The PS3 fanboys won't like hearing it, but when you've gotten used to a lot of the 360 features you take them for granted, and can't figure out why the PS3 shipped without something similar (and why don't we have them 1.5 years later????). The decision is yours alone, but I don't see the point in giving up your PS3 and taking an economic loss when in a year or two the PS3 will probably have a library of games you want to play.
Warhawk is a very good game. The problem is that with no single player segment, you have to take the steep learning curve online. That's not so bad, but there's not a lot of conversation on PSN, so you're lucky if you can ask people for help or tips.
As far as the bluetooth controllers go, I've seen that many times but up until now I thought it was just my system.
Again, my opinion is hang on to it, but its your money. What are you going to gain by ditching it? Maybe you'll break even, maybe you won't.
marauder800 @ May 21st 2008 9:13AM
Dammit what the hell is the problem with these confirmation emails? Anyway, what I tried to post the first time went something like this (was much more articulate the first time, but whatever):
It's hard to go from a feature rich system to one that doesn't offer basics like in game XMB, but there's not really much reason to ditch your PS3. You'll be lucky to break even, and chances are good that in a year or two there will be a library of games that interest you. There are a couple of exclusives I'm looking forward to. Also I intend to pick up Soul Caliber on the PS3 because of its superior D-pad and I probably won't want to play this game online anyway. That title is a good PS3 fit.
Sony will eventually catch up to the basic features offered by the 360 (why the PS3 shipped without some features, let alone doesn't have them 1.5 years later, is anyone's guess). It doesn't make sense to ditch your PS3 now, because as a gamer you'll probably want one down the road. Check out a few of the titles I enjoy, like Motorstorm or Uncharted and bide your time until big titles like Little Big Planet or GT hit (some will mention Resistance 2, Kill Zone 2, etc but I'm not a big fan of playing shooters with the PS3 controller, but that's just me).
Yes, I've seen the controller issue, but up until now I thought it was just my console.
The decision is yours, but I see no reason to jump ship now that you have invested the money.
James @ May 21st 2008 11:32AM
I have both systems. I got my Wii first, then 360, then PS3. I got the 360 for a few exclusives (BioShock, then Mass Effect, plus a few others). I got the PS3 because of Ratchet and Clank, MGS, FF, maybe LBP, and White Knight Story/Chronicles, and also to upscale my many PS2 games. Note that only one of those PS3 games has actually been released yet. If I had the space at home, I might try to get into Eye of Judgment, which looks cool, but it looks like too much work to set up a game.
I own about a dozen 360 games, but only 2 PS3 games -- I bought Ratchet and Clank with the system, then I got Uncharted about a month ago (but resold it after I beat it -- no replay value, really), then Devil May Cry 4 (not an exclusive!) a week or two ago. I've got a couple of PSN titles, too, but nothing to write home about. I just looked at Metacritic, and the top 20 games I either already played, own the 360/PC version of, or just can't get excited about (sports games and FPS, ugh).
Long story short: I use the PS3 as a network media player far more often than I use it for games. It's top-notch in that respect (especially if you get the BD remote), but frankly it hasn't come into its own for exclusives yet.

Ya, I really like this type of community development. This is what I want to see. Moreover, I saw a page saying that PS3, 360 might be due for price cuts. In it, Divnich said, "but if May's hardware sales drop below the 50,000 units sold a week threshold, we can definitely expect something in terms of a change in strategy from both Microsoft and Sony."

aidan @ May 21st 2008 8:44AM
Sony really needs to merge the PSN accounts with OpenID. Then integrate it with Google's Friend Connect, Facebook and your AIM/Jabber/iChat account.
Let people make their own communities and keep in touch with their friends.
Toliman @ May 21st 2008 9:04AM
well, it's a start.
it will fail before it's even walked out of the gate due to the fact that GAME 3.0:
1) is not going to integrate into the game itself,
2) people just don't follow gated communities all that religiously if there's nothing to do in them.
3) it's a gated community.
4) its not fun.
5) it's going to get in the way of other things that the PS3 should be stealing and emulating from the other console companies.
the last point is perhaps the most apt.
Maverick Saturn @ May 21st 2008 10:12AM

willxcore @ May 22nd 2008 1:41AM
Why does it say "customizable" and "customisable" (incorrect spelling) at the same time on the board there? WTF Sony?
Also, I agree with everyone that says this stupid shit won't work. I already have my forums of choice to BS about games on, I never go to an official game site to talk about anything. Also, Sony needs to worry more about integrating the PSN with as much as possible so that it's a much smoother operation to interact with other players. Release Home as it is and give up on it already because it's not going to be anything that people are really going to fuck with. People are turning their PS3's on to play games and watch movies, not play The Sims.
To the dude who is wondering about keeping his PS3. I have all three systems and my PS3 is on every day whether I'm playing a disc game, a PSN game or watching a movie. My Wii is almost NEVER on and the 360 is only on if I really feel like playing one of the games I have for it, which I've beaten already besides Orange Box. I don't even subscribe to Live because I don't use my Xbox I'm not gonna waste money on a service I won't be using. To each their own.
Maverick Saturn @ May 21st 2008 10:11AM
Now if only Sony could link them, SO I DONT HAVE TO REGISTER TO EVERY SINGLE SITE OF EVERY GAME I HAVE TO MEET PEOPLE AND SEE MY STATS. God....
If they were all networked, that would be incredible, and like facebook, you add the game networks to your profile as games release so you can see all your stats on one profile. :) Whats the point having Home and friendslist and community sites and official playstation forum plus all the other game sites such as this one?
ITS TOO MUCH!

It would be cool if u could message people on ur friends list from the community websites. They should just make a community playstation site and have u sign up, and then u can join in ohter communites ,but they'll have tabs keeping track of what communities ur in so u will only need one site to check all ur stats. Its going to suck if u make different usernames and passwords for different sites.

I come home from work and like to play a good game alone. I want a good single player experience. Screw this multiplayer crap. It is the same exact experience in every game.
All studios want multiplayer for is:
Less development costs
Opportunity for advertising
Social networks are the buzz right now for attracting investment
