Resident Evil 5 to have pop-in co-op, flashbacks, more

Also revealed to return is the "Mercenaries" mini-game from Resident Evil 4. A few more features/tweaks were mentioned as well: still no strafing, but a cover system has been implemented so you can press against walls and/or shoot around corners. You can now also dodge and duck using the right analog stick.
Stop now if you don't want to read any spoilers at all about the game. We don't want to write them, but we feel obligated to. Consider a small part of us dying as we type these. The game takes place in a small African country near a line of active volcanoes stretched across Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Kenya. Volcanic activity is what unleashes the virus upon the masses. Classic characters abound -- Sherry Birkin and Albert Wesker have been confirmed -- with playable flashbacks to fill in some story bits otherwise untold.
Look for the game in 2009, the preview concludes. We said it would be out in fiscal year '08, which goes into March of '09. So, look for the game in March. Then delayed to September. Just kidding!

Is that one zombie-type human in the bottom right of that picture breakdancing?
LAZoftheTamarinds @ May 23rd 2008 12:50AM
Dance Dance Resident Evil Revolution Confirmed!
Anyways I can't wait for this game. It is on my list of top upcoming games. If I had to choose 3 Ps3 games to get this year they would be Resident Evil 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Little Big Planet. All these new features in RE5 are wonderful! (faints with smile on face while random zombie pops from nowhere and starts to feed on me) :)

I was guessing that Capcom was trying to smart by projecting a release date way the hell into the future to avoid a Kojima-like deadline snafu.
If they can make Christmas '08, that would be awesome, but not holding my breath....

Return of the "Mercenaries" mode is all I needed to hear. That was my favorite part of RE4.

This is all Capcom ever does. Recycle and regurgitate. Is there anything they can do without taking ideas from other franchises? Playable flashbacks? While I welcome such things, we've seen them first in MGS4. A string of volcanoes releasing a virus? I was hoping for something other than that. I don't know, I'm beginning to have doubts for this title already. Which is a shame because I'm a big RE fan. Mind you...a flashback of Raccoon City with next-gen graphics would be a sight to behold.
ClarkyCat @ May 23rd 2008 3:56AM
A non-pre-rendered Raccoon City just wouldn't be right!
Anyway, I'm glad to hear they're refining the combat system, but if it does literally turn into Army of Two with "not zombies" I will probably cry. As good as RE4 was, there was a distinct lack of horror, or survival for that matter. They need to be focusing on that rather than having new punch animations.
reson8er @ May 23rd 2008 11:22AM
MGS4 is not the first ever game to have playable flashbacks.
Ghost inthe Shell @ May 23rd 2008 3:02AM
what ever hapend to umbrela i have't played the 4th one yet have they moved onto something other then the t vires
James @ May 23rd 2008 11:10AM
Waitwaitwait, you haven't played RE4 yet? Why are you on the Internet instead of in the car driving to the mall to buy it? GO!
Seriously, RE4 is awesome. Get the Wii version if you can -- the pointer-based aiming makes a 10/10 game score at least a 12 =-p

Finally a bit more information on R.E. 5 im glad they are adding online functionality i guess it should be fun doing some R.E. 5 co-op i cant wait

Does it seem like Capcom is effing this up by adding a "cover system?" Since when was the last time zombies carried guns and shot guns (other than Nemesis) ? Dodging I can understand by pressing up against walls? Hmmm.... it's like Capcom's lost their touch. Though however, did you guys check out the new Tatsunoko vs Capcom game?
Mikolic @ May 23rd 2008 8:04AM
What I want to know is, can you move while you shoot now?
Danielle @ May 23rd 2008 9:59AM
This is game going be one HUGE disappointment to fans. I just know it. It's all HD visuals and nothing more.
Come on Capcom, try harder or try something new. PLEASE!
The videogame industry is filled with enough graphic whore companies. (I'm looking at you, EPIC! Stupid Cliffy B and his mediocre GOW game, I don't care about that stupid cover system, "Stop and Pop" "It's like peanut butter and Chocolate" I would hate it when Cliffy B said that. ugh.)
Zombie Huggles @ May 23rd 2008 11:59AM
Is anyone bothered by the over-the-shoulder view? I mean it helps, but games like MGS4 and Uncharted let you switch shoulders, and don't force-it while moving around. But some games I've played with it forced like Kane and Lynch, it really annoys me. Makes me feel like I'm running around with one eye closed.
RPMd70 @ May 24th 2008 5:35AM
i totally agree.

Man, how stereotypical do haters have to get?
Nothing about this game looks bad, playable flashbacks mean possibly fighting old school creatures that have been updated (which will be wonderful to fans of the old story type), cover is a realistic element of any combat situation and would make plenty of sense for a trained fighter like Chris, much more of the story is going to be filled in, the fight dynamics are speedier and devolve into madness should you be surrounded, long range sniping is possible in many more places, the physical environment affects gameplay, etc.
I can't wait until it actually comes out and silences the jackasses. Birkin's Tyrant for the win.
