SingStar Vol 2 dated and detailed
Sony has confirmed to us today that SingStar Vol 2 will be released in Europe on June 20th. Those lucky Australians will get it on June 19th -- technically almost two days earlier, thanks to the time difference. Vol 2 will feature a new pack of thirty songs, none of which are currently available on the SingStore. Sony is careful to tell us that licensing songs for a disc and licensing for the SingStore are two very different things, so don't expect to see these tunes available for download day and date with Vol 2's release. There's no reason why they won't be up eventually, however.
If you fancy seeing the really rather excellent tracklist for Vol 2 then take a peek after the jump. Sure, changing discs mid-party is a bit of a pain, but Sony has made is as painless as possible. We're particularly excited about the Killers, Kaiser Chiefs and Nirvana tracks. Good stuff, indeed.

"Swapping discs... painless as possible"... well only if they allowed the tracks to be copied to your ps3 and then just leave one disc or the other in the drive to play the game.
This is so annoying, thought the whole idea was NOT to have lots of discs, swapping for different tracks etc.
And theres some good tracks on there... which I'm sure they won't be in a hurry to add to the store. Seems pretty lame to play the "different licensing issues" card for reasons for not having these tracks in the Store.
Dr. Strangepork @ May 23rd 2008 8:47AM
You are right on target. There are many songs on here that I would buy from the store, but not so many that I would buy the disc.

Perhaps....if you are a PS2 SS owner and you want to enter the PS3 world of SingStar you may choose this as your starter disc instead of Volume 1.
PreGHz @ May 23rd 2008 9:11AM
You guys will never be satisfied, will you?
Strangepork, just because you would buy them off the store but not the disc, doesn't mean that there won't be plenty who would rather have hard media instead in DLC.
"Sony, giving the consumer choice"
And considering the fact that they have both hard drive and disc based content, switching between the two is indeed painless. Take Karaoke Revolution for example. None of the PS2 versions allowed for swapping whatsoever, so quit yer whining.
reson8er @ May 23rd 2008 11:46AM
Honestly though, if you have guests over swapping discs and recalling what is on which is a bit of a pain. Is it possible the tracks load into Ram and only need re-loading once per session?
If so this would be a forgivable offense imo. If not, personally I would wait for them to appear in the SingStore.
Deaddy @ May 23rd 2008 3:16PM
Well said, PreGHz.

Sure, I'll be satisfied when all the SS vol. 2 songs are available on the store. Or at least the ones I am interested in.
And sure, someone could pick up Vol. 2 as their entryway into the PS3 versions, but guess what, then they won't have access to the vol 1 songs are they are not available from the store (at least not yet).
And just b/c KR doesn't allow you to swap discs doesn't make it ok for SS to do the same. Remember this is next generation gaming not last generation.
And reson8er is right, as a party game swapping SS discs shouldn't be part of the equation.

I don't care how they do it, as long as they keep adding songs one way or the other. I had no problem switching out discs on Singstar PS2 and I'll have no problem with this. I like the discs, I like the Singstore. I'm pretty damned satisfied with how they are handling the PS3 version.
reson8er @ May 23rd 2008 11:39AM
I have to admit, I am totally hooked on SingStar, after just picking it up in the US release.
My only gripe is not enough songs available atm. I know updates will happen, but really there can never be enough songs for this game :)
Userless @ May 23rd 2008 3:24PM
Not enough songs? They offer 200 downloadable songs, which is pretty impressive! Hell, even Rock Band which has been doing DLC every week is only up to 179 songs.
Wayne @ May 23rd 2008 5:33PM
We won't be buying this disc. Release the songs on the singstore. I refuse to swap discs, I bought a PS3 for a reason. Also, where are the freakin' wireless mics already? We are waiting to throw our money at you!!
NineT9 @ May 23rd 2008 8:22PM
holy shiz some people are soooo picky and spoiled
all your friggin complaining ppl... theres only 1 important thing that matters:
getting more songs.
Id much rather have to deal with swapping and what not then to not get songs at all...
its like complaining about your MPG in your Ferrari
Dr. Strangepork @ Jun 10th 2008 4:47PM
"Id much rather have to deal with swapping and what not then to not get songs at all..."
I would to, but since the store already exists you don't have to.
What if Sony were to release discs with 10 songs on them? Would you say "all that matters is that there are more songs avaialbe"? I doubt it.
Since it is technically feasible to have one disc and then a bunch of DLC, wouldn't that be the *best* approach. Sure one could accept multiple disc, but why would you want to?
Just b/c one wants the best gaming experience doesn't make them spoiled. They just might have higher standards or are uncomfortable settling when they know a great company like Sony can do better.

you obviously have dial up internet still.....
bigboi216 @ May 24th 2008 3:22AM
who buys these games? really??
elephant_stone @ May 24th 2008 8:18AM
The game has been updated recently...I think the update included the harmony mode!

I haven't sprung for SingStar yet, and never have had a version of SingStar, however, I love those kinds of games. I was waiting for Singstar, but Karaoke Revolution came out first in the States, so I picked that up. I am kinda disappointed with the lack of the Wireless Mics. I realize SingStar is overall the better choice, but it will have to wait a bit, you were too late for me. However, get those Wireless Mics out and my credit card information will be typed in quicker than you can imagine.
BigT @ Jun 12th 2008 12:13PM
I think this is total crap. I agree with strangepork, get it in your heads people! This is the PS3! They designed it so that we can dynamically ADD content via the internet/HDD.
Sure they have over 200 songs to download, about 1/3 is pop music which my SS friends and I personally don't prefer. (ie: WE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE HUNGRY FOR MORE CONTENT AS WELL AS MORE DIVERSE CONTENT).
And I think that Wayne is right that we shouldn't have to switch SS Cd's in the middle of a SS partyfest. It's like changing CD's of music at a party, you don't want it to stop, but then there's an awkward silence while changing which really is a 'buzz kill'.
final thoughts:
GET A FREAKIN LIFE SONY, GET YOUR CRAP TOGETHER AND STOP BOTHERING WITH LICENSING ISSUES WITH A TOTALLY DIFFERENT GAME. ADD TO THE DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT WHICH REVOLUTIONIZED SINGSTAR AND GET ON WITH THE GOOD MUSIC YOU DAMN DOUCHBAGS

My vote: Songs to the SingStore.
How much is the new game, $50? You have to pressing the disc, package, distribute it. If the 30 songs were on the store @ $1.50 they would be $45, without all the overhead.
I don't understand - if you put it on the down-loadable store and you will make more money. Put it on the disc, along with a handful of songs you don't want, then you will making a mistake. Seems like someone didn't learn from their lesson from the death of the CD.
This is not a format (Karaoke Rev, Rock Band) war - it's a content war (songs, songs, songs). Give people easy ways to get content to their game and you'll succeed. Their is no easier way then through the SingStore.
Unless someone finds a way to hack pirated music files into it. Oops, did I just way that?

Hey Guys. I have heaps of PS2 discs and I was wondering can I disc swap and have the PS3 read PS2 discs? I've just bought a PS3 and haven't bought PS3 version of the game yet. And I agree, the discs should be able to be loaded on to the HDD even if it is on a session basis.
Randomthoughts82 @ Jun 17th 2008 7:18PM
While I agree that they should have been on downloadable content, I can understand sort of why its also a decent idea to do it this way.
Firstly, yes the songs are cheaper. More annoying to go through, but as long as the songs on the game tell you which game you need for them, its not going to be overly annoying for me (though maybe for others).
Secondly, you've got to consider that eventually (though I hope its not for quite some time), you may end up running out of space. Having to decide between which songs to keep on your PS3 and which not to would be pretty annoying, no? Having an extra disc for this might not be a bad idea, especially if other games on the PS3 start having quite a lot of downloadable content.
Thirdly, they are right in saying that its two different things getting the rights to the songs for download or disc use, but on the other hand, they could have just applied for download rights originally. Going for disc rights makes a little less sense. If the promoters of the song suggested that they'd only allow it on disc version (which is highly unlikely) then its possible its out of sony's hands, but I find that way too unlikely.
As for the last comment, well I'm from England and its £18 without the mics (which is what I'd be planning on buying), whereas getting the songs on download would cost me £30. Now although its a slightly different thing in America (downloads cost cheaper there...which has annoyed me...), it sounds like the game is more expensive (unless you were refering to the version with mics...). Anyway, the disc sounds cheaper here by quite a bit.
So for me, I don't mind this coming out on disc. I tend not to spend much on the store, but I would like more songs and I will probably get this :D
