PSN hits one million accounts in Japan

Today's not just Memorial Day here for us Americans. In Japan, they've got a celebration of their own. SCEJ is partying to the news that the PSN over yonder has just broken over one million unique accounts -- that's roughly half the user base in Japan. 400,000 users are on every month.

Commemorating this milestone, SCEJ is giving away 1,000 network promotional codes worth ¥1,000 each. If you've got a Japanese account, it looks like you can sign-up for a chance to win up until June 9. Give it a shot.

Exactly! I mean, I pretty much thought that a PSN account = owning a PS3, but then why are people not setting up the PSN account when they get their PS3? Even if you don't intend to buy something through the PSN its still a great place to go for free content like demos, videos and PS3 themes and wallpapers. The Japanese even have more content available to them then in any other region, but when less then 1/2 of PS3 owners actually set up a PSN account, why should this continue?
It would be interesting to know what the ratio is in North American and Europe. Perhaps if there are more people subscribed to the PSN in other regions, then show them the love instead of always pandering to a Japanese market that seems strangely uninterested in the purpose of the PSN.

Wasn't the percentage like 70% in the US? I want to say 80% but I'm not sure.

Out of my 6 friends that have ps3s.. 2 don't have PSN accounts because they don't have the internet. I keep telling them to quit living in the stone age, it's 2008 dammit. But I think this is a major reason along with those who only use it for a Blu Ray player for not signing up to the PSN.

Just sign into the store. It's right there you can't miss it. But this is really for Japan, hence why I didn't leave instructions. They should be the ones to get the goodies ... but like that's gonna stop hordes of people. So, if you want it, figure out the rest on your own!
