Co-founder of Inhabitants and one of the creators of the
Oddworld universe, Lorne Lanning, has confirmed a new
Oddworld title to be in development, but remains tight-lipped on any sort of details. the boss of Maxis, Jeff Braun, let this news slip last week
in a speech, so it's nice to get a solid confirmation at last. There's not much else to say, really. There's a new game in development with graphics apparently comparable to an animated movie, the two guys are working together on it, but anything else is a complete mystery. We'll keep looking for more info, but until then, discuss what sort of collaboration could result from these two. Sim-Oddworld, perhaps?

YAY :D
I hope it continues Abe's and Munch's story.

I listened to one of the creators when he was a guest on Insomniacs Full Moon Show, and let it be said, that these guys are nothing if not ambitious.
I'm really curious to see what direction the series takes, the creator was very opinionated as to what they liked and did not like in todays games/culture. Whatever form this game takes, it will be one to watch.

I hope they bring back Abe. I miss that guy.
Even if it was from the side & not 3D, I'd love it. As long as it's Abe in a new oddworld game. Its been long overdue.

The Oddworld series seems to have a small number of very enthusiastic fans. I suppose that makes it a cult game. From what I've seen (and I admit, it's somewhat limited), these games feature very good gameplay and level construction, but suffer from dismal character design.
I know that there are people who have great affection for the Oddworld characters, but by and large they don't seem to appeal. They're ugly, and not in a particularly charming way. Which is an unfortunate thing to hold a game back, but there it is. You can have all the innovative design and excellent gameplay you like, but if your characters generally look like something that came out of a chain smoker's left lung, not too many people are going to take the bait.

I would say the characters are taken straight from a Tim Burton's Nightmare since the setting; well the whole oddworld is really strange and scary.
Just look at this.

I can't believe it got "T" that stuff is "M" granted at least. Screw GTA this way more gruesome. After playing GTAIV I have to say that it’s reputation for being ultra violent is overrated (It still deserves a perfect 10 for gameplay and graphics).
Yeah some characters in oddworld are not as friendly looking as Mario but they compensate that with what most videogame characters lack which is a good personality, back-story and character development.
Oddworld games may not be for everyone due its dark settings and difficulty but they deserve a chance at least.

I think you are totally missing the point of the character design. It is supposed to be different and not at all bubbly. The world is supposed to be "odd" and creepy. The Mudokens have nasally voices as well. These quirks add to the character. The first two games are pure gold. Ah well. Greatness is lost on some.

Dear God yes!! LOVE Oddworld! remember the PS1 game? Best platformer ever..
StevenRafael @ May 27th 2008 5:01PM
Please return to the 2D sidescrolling. 3D is overrated.
Mr.ESC @ May 27th 2008 5:09PM
I don't know Munch's oddysee and Stranger's wrath are still darn good.
2D or 3D these guys are geniouses I'm sure they'll pull a great way either if it is in 2D or 3D.What I really want to know is if they are going to release a collectors set.
ClarkyCat @ May 27th 2008 6:51PM
Wonderful, it'd be nice if they re-released the Xbox games on the PSN to placate us fans, I never got to play them!

WOOHOO!

Sounds like good fun. I loved the Abe's games, and was very enthused about Munch's until it transferred from Playstation to XBOX. Lacking the equipment, or the drive to buy it simply for one game, I haven't played it. Would have loved to, though. Never played Stranger's Wrath, either (Actually just found out about it recently, because I've kinda forgotten the series).
With any luck, maybe we'll see something from this, and it would make it's way to our platform as well.

OMG! OMG OMG OMG!
Lourne said after Stranger came that he would be taking the company toward animated movies instead of games and I was nearly heartbroken by the news.
This is awesome news!

now if we could just get the old ones up on the PSN store
