Part four of GameTrailers' Metal Gear retrospective completes the Metal Gear Solid line of games with a look back at MGS3: Snake Eater and MGS: Portable Ops for the PSP. Snake Eater took MGS fans back to the very beginning -- to a time before Solid Snake even existed. The game marked a huge change for the series, not only in setting and time period but also with its gameplay. Snake Eater was the most innovative and most difficult out of the three main games, and is probably the favorite for many diehard MGS fans.
With so many memorable moments and a brilliant ending, there's no doubt that this one cemented MGS as one of the best (if not the best) narratives ever told in gaming. Each successive MGS game raised the bar for excellence and we're certain that MGS4 will no doubt raise it even higher.
Not really sure how you can compare a 3+ year old PS2 title to some of the stuff thats on the market now. It was late generation PS2 and did look excellent for the time, and its one of the last games to go for 'realism' and actually include colors other than brown in its design palate.
I didnt compare it to the stuff on the market now. I didn't compare it to anything. I just said it looks like crap. However if you want to make a comparison... Games for the original xbox look good on 360. By good I mean the EXACT SAME OR BETTER!!! Meanwhile (most) PS2 games that are played on PS3 look like GARBAGE!!! And by Garbage I mean jaggy and/or blurry messes. Granted this is because of a host of reasons but the point still remains. Also, I am referring to when these games are played using HDMI cables on a High Def TV. Since if you are using composite cables on a standard def then it should look identical to last gen.
I'm not going to lie, I shed a tear right along with Snake at the end of MGS3. I didn't play it until recently when I picked up the Essential Collection, but it easily became my favorite game of all time. I was pumped about MGS4 before, but now I'm almost shaking with anticipation for it.
and kids said i was stupid for not trading in my games. I also beat MGS1 last year during a dry spell. and my hard copy Castlevania: sotn i beat once a year. (also FF7 & FF9 i tinkered with)
This isn't the last video right? They're going to touch down on the handhelds next and thats it, or maybe a recap?
haha not super-hard if you get the right equipment. Kill shcmoos (ghosts) in the upside down library until your blue in the face and you'll get the best sword in the game, then kill prometheus (giant gold skeletons) near the library until you get 2 rings of vlad.
but its over %100 per castle.(%200.6 total) then you can glitch outside the castle to get even higher then your supposed to.
These are the best Retrospectives GT has done so far. It's so cool knowing I have all the portable versions (including the GBC one). Metal Gear Acid 2 is my favorite and it's such an under appreciated game.

I never got around to picking up Snake Eater on the PS2 - which is now sitting snuggly in my wardrobe (next to my Dreamcast and about 150 games).
Question: I have a 60GB PS3 with BC. If I pick up MGS3 does anyone know if it will work ok on my PS3?
Thanks in advance.
patrolpatrol @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:58PM
Ive only come across one game for my 60gig that didnt work. that was summoner.
Popfrogs @ Jun 3rd 2008 3:36PM
Worked fine on my 60GB, give it a shot. You can probably still rent it if you wanna test it first.
Eric E @ Jun 3rd 2008 3:41PM
I also have a 60gb and played through an hour of it, worked fine. Like with all MGS games, its best to have a DualShock.
Gunegune @ Jun 3rd 2008 6:05PM
Yes MGS3 should work just fine. You can check the compatibility of various PS1 and PS2 games at
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus if you'd like.
@patrolpatrol: Apparently all issues with Summoner have been resolved with the 2.20 update.

Its a good thing Summoner didnt work... what a piece of doo-doo, and I picked it up on launch day!
As for Snake Eater I have one of the 60 gig PS3's from launch and can confirm that it DOES work. However it looks (graphically) like a piece of crap.

Do you beat SotN 100% by going through the super hard upside-down castle also? I still haven't done this, most I got was 97% or so.

I wish I could play games I enjoyed so much a second time around. I just have too much to play at the moment.
The idea of going through Vagrant Story again however really is so very very tempting.
The day a sequel to that game is announced (I know, I know, not going to happen) I will shed a pure lone tear of blissful joy.
