The Getaway and Eight Days have been cancelled
In another Sony announcement made today, it appears that two games being developed by the internal London studios have now been potentially canned. The Getaway and Eight Days are now out of production, thanks to budgetary redistribution. Gamesindustry.biz have the full statement from Sony, in which they state that "this decision was made following an internal review of all games and it was deemed that with the incredibly strong list of exclusive first party titles coming up both this year and in the near future, resource should be reallocated to enhance those projects closer to completion."
It's thought that this is a direct result of Phil Harrison's successor, Shuhei Yoshida, becoming President of Sony's Worldwide Studios. We heard relatively recently from The Getaway's lead writer that the game was still in production and UK newspaper The Guardian had a recent article claiming Eight Days was ramping up to full production, so it's disheartening to hear that the projects have been canned.
[UPDATE] CVG states that "A Sony UK representative assured CVG that both titles had been "completely cancelled", and so will not be rescued from the bin at a later date."

What the hell?!? I've been waiting 2 years for both these games to be released, and now they've been scraped. I just wanted 8 Days since I saw the trailer 2 years ago at E3.
jason_fly_07 @ Jun 4th 2008 9:57AM
8 Days R.I.P.
McKey1991 @ Jun 4th 2008 9:57AM
If the money goes to good use for upcoming first-party games then I'm okay with it.
Liquid @ Jun 4th 2008 10:04AM
Sony were finally starting to make the right moves and make a mark but if they carry on like this then there killing themselves. With this and ingame ad's sony are starting there yearly mistakes roll again I guess.
JoJo @ Jun 4th 2008 10:01AM
Sony...
You just better be making good exclusives then.
If not, i might have to go to squarebox 720
Eggy @ Jun 4th 2008 11:19AM
Yeah because of all the great exlcusives on that system. Urr what exclusives?
x silence x @ Jun 4th 2008 12:36PM
Hey Eggy,
How's Ninja Gaiden II?
Gaucho @ Jun 4th 2008 10:03AM
YOSHIDA!!!!!
. . . damn 8 days looked good, that really sucks. Well, though it probably won't happen, maybe this will speed up the release of other games . . . *yeah right* . . .
deathpapaya @ Jun 4th 2008 10:04AM
Seriously Sony? Seriously?
If 360's were region region free, I would have sold my PS3 for a 360 by now. Easily.
Aozora @ Jun 4th 2008 10:24AM
Just sell your PS3 and stop whining.
Matthew M @ Jun 4th 2008 10:40AM
Do what Aozora said. I'm sick of people complaining. If you want a 360 get a 360, just don't whine about the PS3 in the process.
Brodie-san @ Jun 4th 2008 11:33AM
Do it. If anything to stop the incessant whining.
Emophia @ Jun 5th 2008 3:13PM
Shut up bandwagon fanboys.
I bought the console, I have every right to complain about it.
And if you don't like it, well, screw you.
I prefer teh PS3 to the 360, it's region free, I prefer the controller, and I prefer the XMB to MS's blade.
And I have a PC that can play mos teh of the 360's 'exclusives'.
But this is still bullshit.
And just because your fanboy eyes can't see it doesn't mean other people can.
Fiddlesworth @ Jun 4th 2008 10:06AM
Question is, what HAVE they been working on for four years or whatever.
Gaucho @ Jun 4th 2008 10:09AM
shh, its a surprise. You'll find out in 6 months to 5 years
x silence x @ Jun 4th 2008 12:38PM
Pre-rendered fake gameplay videos would be my guess...
Fiddlesworth @ Jun 4th 2008 10:10AM
Wow, seriously. People are getting this worked up about games that haven't even been shown yet? Just tech demos years ago? How do you know what they've been working on? And you realise SCEWWS has more internal studios than any other first party, right?
browntown @ Jun 4th 2008 10:14AM
Sucks i guess, but game industry biz says they stopped it to work on other project that are closer to completion, so they'll go back to them later on, but they might make drastic changes, and will be out in 2010. Maybe they are working on killzone 2 and little big planet.
DMeisterJ @ Jun 4th 2008 10:15AM
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/sony-cancels-eight-days-and-the-getaway
This Games Industry article says that they stopped production, not that the projects are cancelled... Maybe they stopped production for now to focus on Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, and Singstar?
Nerdkiller @ Jun 5th 2008 7:07AM
I mean, 8 Days just would've showcased what the PS3 could do. The seamless transition between gamplay and FMV scene, the destruction, I would've said to continue the project.
Miguel @ Jun 5th 2008 11:24AM
I was never aware of this eight days but after reading this thread i watched the trailer for it on you tube and was utterly amazed. The graphics are amazing and like you said that seamless transition from cutscene to gameplay is awesome. Why cancel it?
Christian @ Jun 4th 2008 10:23AM
Maybe they are the people who are helping 2K Games with Bioshock?
Miguel @ Jun 4th 2008 10:27AM
That sucks! I wanted to see the Getaway in London with bad ass ps3 graphics. :(
Se7enwolf @ Jun 4th 2008 10:28AM
this is sony's biggest mistake. These games were two of their biggest titles. I bet most other games that sony is putting these resources to will be total crap.
Sony needs to fire that new president. They were going good up until now.
Popfrogs @ Jun 4th 2008 10:28AM
Fine with me, cancelled or put on hold, they need to bust out with their AAA titles before the holiday season hits. They can leave second-tier titles like this for next summer.
Brum @ Jun 4th 2008 10:45AM
Damn getting a ps3 this september and i was actually looking forward to the getaway on the ps3. I bet its because the tech demo's where just cgi :P.
Still if they put there focus on some other decent games it should all payback for the loss of these 2 games.
evilfoxhound @ Jun 4th 2008 10:47AM
Why is there a screenshot from the GT5 Prologue London Track under the Getaway name? LOL
Anyway, good riddance. Gataway's were pretty second rate anyway.

fernando @ Jun 4th 2008 10:55AM
Sony continues to dissapoint this gen, guess i'll wait till 2009/10 to pick up a ps3
Matthew M @ Jun 4th 2008 11:22AM
If your gonna have that attitude, please don't.
Andrew Johnston @ Jun 4th 2008 11:15AM
That's not a screenshot from gt, it's from the getaway screenshots released a while back. I'm gutted, was really looking forward to the getaway :(
finelicker @ Jun 4th 2008 11:26AM
Bummer, I wanted to see the getaway, sure it was only a tech demo, but it still looked very very cool.
This is a broad stereotype, but I'm hoping they haven't just binned those two western titles for japenese only first party games. Bear in mind how well the PS3 is doing in the EU right now, these games would have done nothing but bolster the growing PS3 fanbase in the region.
Puntachu @ Jun 4th 2008 11:34AM
I have to say that I agree with their decision. Even if it means postponing or cancelling other projects (like these 2 are seeing now), more needs to be done with the more immediate projects.
Im sorry for those of you who have been waiting for these projects to hit release, but I'd rather see the resources pushed into more finishing and fine-tuning of current projects (most of the fine-tuning and streamlining of a title happens in the fews weeks before it goes gold). Plus, I'd rather see more frequent releases of good first party games than seeing them so far between. With this type of approach, it secures a faster release without (neccasarily) a drop in quality. They get a product out the door faster, get a quicker return of their investment, and end up with a much larger pool of resources to use for their next title.
RagingStormX @ Jun 4th 2008 11:50AM
Wow....pulled the plug on the Getaway......you've got to be kidding me. I wasn't to feeling 8 days too much...but the getaway...come on Sony...WTF?! Weak sauce!
DanOD @ Jun 4th 2008 12:06PM
This really sucks,
I was hoping on getting my hands on '8 Days' sometime this/next year. Oh well.
If their putting the money into the London Studios that means more Eyetoy and Singstar games, joy. :(
fatmandoubblescoops @ Jun 4th 2008 12:07PM
aren't they wasting money by stopping game in the middle of production like that, and by time the ps3 comes out with an exclusive the at least one of games would of been finished by now. i hope they dint cancel these two games for something crappy like super Rub 'a' Dub 2
golden sapphire @ Jun 4th 2008 12:22PM
oh fuck you sony fuck you! why dont you also stop producin ps3's to not loose anymore money! shit... wheres phil harrison when we need him...
Joe @ Jun 4th 2008 12:10PM
I hope Sony is just putting these games on hold to help make the other games they are making better and will return to these games at a later date. Because I though both of these games looked great.
Brian Spence @ Jun 4th 2008 1:27PM
The Getaway looked really cool. Maybe they think it's been done before though, considering how GTA IV looks. Like, it's just a substitution of New York with London.
anthonyjh @ Jun 4th 2008 1:39PM
Didn't particularly care about 8 days, but The Getaway? Awwww... the first was awesome (skipped the second). Was really looking forward to this...
Chaospluto @ Jun 4th 2008 2:07PM
I will confirm with those who knows it's only stopped production, NOT canceled.
"Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced that it has stopped production on two PlayStation 3 titles that were in development at the Sony London Studio - Eight Days and The Getaway." -gameindustry
Stopped means they will eventually pick it back up in due time.
bamby_the360fanboy_whore @ Jun 4th 2008 1:58PM
eight days was pretty much the only reason why i believed in the ps3(graphics).
don't get me wrong, im sure mgs4 has nice graphics but, its still nothing compared to what the 8 days trailer showed; of course if the video is actually real....
naruto007 @ Jun 4th 2008 2:34PM
fuck you sony!!
naruto007 @ Jun 4th 2008 3:23PM
screw you sony!!
bamby_the360fanboy_whore @ Jun 4th 2008 3:53PM
GOD MAN you sony for so many dissapointments!!
R.I.P Solid snake

Goddamit, I had to accedently click on my email again!
AF @ Jun 22nd 2008 8:09AM
WTF are Sony playing at i bought a PS3 predominantly for these titles, if they aren't put into re-production, or any news comes out by next christmas i'm selling mine and buyng a xbox360. And i thoroughly urge anyone else who has a PS3 to do so aswell. Sony fucked the PS3 up by going through with a shoddy release, and have completely fucked themselves in the arse by doing this. If Sony don't change their mind i hope that they rot in hell
