Saints Row 2 trailer asks 'would you rather?'
Somehow, after this trailer, our interest in Saints Row 2 shot up from "oh, just another Grand Theft Auto clone" to "oh, wow, this is an awesome Grand Theft Auto clone!" The latest trailer doesn't hide its inspirations; in fact, it revels in them. However, the trailer smartly asks "would you rather," comparing its features to those found in Liberty City's adventures. When the choice is between bowling and spewing sewage on passerbys, we may have a winner.

After im done playing GTA4 I will be playing this as well, or be swapping between each one for a specific fix. This year is going to be awesome!
Zombie Huggles @ Jun 6th 2008 1:12PM
Wow...I mean, I didn't care much for the original Saints Row, but they've made an excellent point. GTA4 was a definite regression for the open-world crime simulator. Though I don't think SR2 will be as graphically well-done or the story as well developed, I think they'll definitely fill the giant gameplay void left by GTA4. San Andreas had air planes, rocket-packs, base jumping, all that fun stuff that got dumped for the sake of a pretentious storyline. Hmmm...
balaam @ Jun 6th 2008 1:14PM
that is some surprisingly inventive advertising
Rick @ Jun 6th 2008 3:48PM
@zombie
Word... I really don't understand why they left out planes, go-carts, parachutes, flame throwers, mini-guns, chainsaws, jet-packs from GTA4.... even if they just had you unlock them after completing the game or use a cheat code to get them...
I mean, what's the point of riding a lift to the top of a skyscraper if I can't jump off & live?
Mirash @ Jun 6th 2008 2:55PM
A attempt to make a GTA IV clone but failed, graphics look bad. I wont be buying this game unless it gets good reviews, wont get more than a 8/10
Jerses @ Jun 6th 2008 1:46PM
would you rather have more minigames or play a real gta?
Kevin Adder Snake @ Jun 6th 2008 1:49PM
There are minigames in GTA 4. Just what are you getting at?
Kevin Adder Snake @ Jun 6th 2008 1:47PM
This is going to fill that hole that GTA 4 doesn't fill. A need to do this and that. That is what Saint's Row is banking on. I think that it is a good pitch. If you try to be serious like GTA, then people will say that you are a rip off. Just make a game and hope that people dig it.
Jerses @ Jun 6th 2008 2:31PM
saint row 1 was awful its full of minigames that are worthless... SR2 looks the same...wow you can trow poo to people, wow you can trow people at train tracks... but what about the real game...it still follow GTA far behind. in gta you can do this and that and more you can finish one mission with a sniper rifle...or just go away, take a car, drive back and run over them. Oh...and SR2 is THQ game.... what good game come from THQ.
Kevin Adder Snake @ Jun 6th 2008 2:42PM
Warhammer 40k series, Company of Heroes, and Supreme Commander. That's just a few I know, because there are some turds there. Yet, that's with all game companies. I'm just saying that games are not always perfect. Saint's Row aint perfect and neither is GTA 4. Will Saint's Row 2 beat GTA 4, probably not. Like I said in a former post: we live in GTA world and everything not made by Rockstar is saw as garbage.
Dvq @ Jun 6th 2008 2:18PM
Wow, someone actually got the balls to go agaisnt Rockstar and GTAIV and shove in their faces what lacked in their game.
blahblahbloo @ Jun 6th 2008 1:55PM
I did not like most of GTA4's mini-games, but the missions are what carry the game.
Popfrogs @ Jun 6th 2008 2:28PM
Which mission, the drive this dude around town mission, or the drive over to some dude, get in a shootout then runaway mission? That's about all the variety I've seen in GTA4 so far, pretty disappointed. Does it get better?
blahblahbloo @ Jun 6th 2008 2:36PM
The one where you rob a bank.
Geoff Gibson @ Jun 6th 2008 5:19PM
You mean the one single mission where you rob a bank? The only mission that provided any real derisions from the rest of the "steal this car", "shoot this guy", and "take me here" type missions? I enjoyed GTAIV but all of the missions sort of blended in with one another, aside form the bank robbing mission. It's just more of the same time and time after time.
I'm looking forward to SR2 as a way for me to get some real fun out of an open world sandbox game. With GTAIV, as soon as I was done with the main storyline I was done with the game... period.
Terrence @ Jun 6th 2008 2:08PM
I thought the original Saints Row was incredible. I enjoyed it much, much more than any previous GTAs. Even compared to GTA4, there are still some little gameplay things thats SR1 has over it. Holding up a liquor/jewelry store in SR1 is great fun because I could never do that in real life; as far as GTA4, things like watching TV, web surfing, and dating are all things we do in real life so it's kind of dull and boring to do it within a videogame.
In my opinion, if the original Saints Row had planes or helicopters, and better humor, it would STILL be better than GTA4. Although GTA4's "getting drunk" feature is more fun than SR1's.
halebound00 @ Jun 6th 2008 2:09PM
LOL, at least it was funny. These guys just guaranteed themselves at least a rental out of me.
lostmongoose @ Jun 6th 2008 3:56PM
GTA for trailer trash...yay...
Nick DiMeglio @ Jun 6th 2008 4:49PM
ha ha. solid. i don't care what anyone says that sh!t is hilarious.
B-way @ Jun 6th 2008 8:24PM
This honestly looks pretty cool. It may turn out to be trash, but its a pretty ballsy trailer.
mezzanine @ Jun 6th 2008 9:21PM
I'm looking forward to this. It gets a lot of flak from GTA's legion, and the characters do look a little inbred, but it looks like fun. GTA 4 was a little disappointing, and what it lacked Saints Row may make up for.
Or it will suck.
JaseH @ Jun 8th 2008 6:55PM
You know why this video seems fun, yet a little ridiculous?
They take all the little 'side' activities you can do within GTA IV, and they leave out all of what makes it great.
Then they compare it side by side to all of what actually makes up Saint's Row 2's gameplay in the end. It's a little unfair if you ask me.
And even though there are some things you'll love to do... they may only wow you once, but then you'll just get bored. What's so fun about shooting feces at a bunch of people with a septic tank, if they all trigger the same reaction, over & over, & over with no personality?... I'd rather just use GTA IV's fire truck to be honest.
Streak in the nude... in front of AI?... that's more pointless than bowling.
Base jump off into what?... the steaming pile of poor graphical sh!t they call a city?
Carsurf?... why? - Because driving your cars into the lowlife city you provide isn't eyesoring enough?
And all those other activities you scramble near the end are just shooting & driving scenes. (When you reach 0:49, pay attention to the bottom row, all the way to the right corner. You'll notice the player flying off a motorbike... what do you see?... the same overused programmed animation CJ had in San Andreas. *rolls eyes*)
Dressing up like a cop & robbing stores are cool. But it's all been done before.
I have a feeling Violation knows their ratings will suck, so making advertisements like these (Masking the pure crap by hyping generic activities) is the only way they can fool people into pre-ordering... for now.
You know Sain't row... Imma be honest with you. I'd love to push a pedestrian into a train. But you lack Euphoria, so GTFO.
There's a difference between being able to do something, and actually doing it right. Your last game sucked monkey balls. Tell me why should I have to take your word for it now?... who do you think you are?
You'll have to show me more, to convince me.

It will probably not get good reviews because its not GTA. Unfortunately.
Robert @ Jun 7th 2008 12:53PM
I don't understand why there's so many Saints Row haters. I know the first game wasn't perfect, but as a casual gamer, I found it more accessible than any GTA title. And now that I've beaten GTA IV and completed 80+ lackluster missions (and a handful of good ones) and endured the completely amateurish story, I can't wait to see what they pull off with Saints Row 2. This is certainly a great start.
highman888 @ Jun 7th 2008 3:39PM
Unfortunatly it's the storyline that makes grand theft auto a step ahead of the game, and the engine is flawless. The trailer "looks" good but let's see how it holds up...It's quite a thing to talk trash about the kings of sandbox.
NitroFrost @ Jun 12th 2008 2:40PM
I just creamed my pants...oh no wait....yea I did.
Ogre722 @ Jun 20th 2008 1:01AM
And you will still be on the shelf at launch while every GTA 4 is being plucked away from all around you. Score one for Peter..... .......err.........I mean Rockstar.
