Crytek looking for a PSP programmer
Crytek, the team behind the critically acclaimed Far Cry and Crysis series, is looking for a programmer to work on the PSP. According to their official site, they are looking for someone with "1+ years experience working on PS2, PSP or DS title" and is "willing to relocate and work at Crytek studio Budapest, Hungary."We don't know exactly what this may become, but it appears Crytek may create a FPS for our beloved handheld. Or, they're pursuing something completely different -- your guess is as good as ours.

At least a dev is jumping INTO the PSP pool rather than out of it.
To all the panicked people worried about PSP games drying up: really, look at the history of the last few years, PSP hardware sales trailed the DS lite, but games were coming out because they were in development for 1-2 years. Now PSP hardware sales have surged again, but devs made decisions last year based on the *old* PSP sales, to maybe not work on PSP games. This year they will look at the recent sales surge & reverse that decision, and next year we'll see a bunch of new of PSP games, regardless of the PSP hardware sales (i.e. if hardware sales go down again)
Because games take 1-2 years to make, they're always playing catch-up with the hardware. It wouldn't be so noticable if the hardware had steady sales, Sony's lack of leadership is a big part of that problem.
Maybe this is all a little optimistic, but we'll have to see how long the dryspell lasts & what gets announced.

Hope we get a FPS. A good one.

I completely agree with Don, everyone's being waaaay to pessimistic about the situation right now, especially when the psp is selling much much better than it was
strike @ Jun 16th 2008 6:52AM
I would like to know how long it takes to port a game. If it doesnt take that long and we're still not seeing any, then I'd be slightly worried. More games like Final Fantasy Tactics and Wipeout would be great.
Alien @ Jun 16th 2008 7:23AM
Same here ( agree with Don ) . Developers didnt have time ti make PSP games , and we will probably only star seeing a couple of Japanese games at the end of this year . But I bet that in a year or so we will see many quality western PSP games :D
Zippon @ Jun 16th 2008 7:42AM
The one major flaw with Don's reasoning is current software sales. You are correct that game development cycles lag behind, so we won't see the effects of the hardware sales boom for a little while. But besides the hardware numbers, developers are looking at the software sales figures. Sure, tons of people bought PSP's in the last six months....but they're not buying software. If A-List titles like Crisis Core, Chains of Olympus, and the upcoming Secret Agent Clank can't crack the charts, developers will produce software for the systems that DO.
:-(
Smokey @ Jun 16th 2008 10:29AM
The only thing with your logic Zippon is that the games you listed have done extremely well, considering the bigger amount of user bases on other systems, for what has done well on the psp, it's been great. I think that we really need to stop getting ports, I'd much rather see just plain original content, and in Japan, this trend shows it sells well.
Western = ports = mediocre sales
Japan = original software = massive profit
I think that they arent going to just look at the software numbers, that'd be too shallow, I think it doesnt take a genius to see what needs to be done. The psp has a pretty good growth in the market. Well, one hopes anyway that it'll get better anyway :( Lets all home for better times ahead for our little systems i guess
Smokey @ Jun 16th 2008 7:56AM
I think we can all agree that there is a reason to the software sales though. good games sell, and we've had a lack of unique and good games on the system until most recently.
I guess we just have to hope for better times ahead, and get some of the love that Japan is getting :(
Zippon @ Jun 16th 2008 10:21AM
Crisis Core and Chains of Olympus WERE good games. ;-)
(Lack of good games explains overall sluggish sales volume, but even the very best titles don't break the charts. THATS a problem.)
Saigon @ Jun 16th 2008 10:30PM
Completely agree with Zippon. Psp games don't break the charts. Pspfanboy made a post quite awhile ago, showing, IIRC, one psp game that made it onto some chart of top selling games for 2007. Thats ridiculous.
Crytek has pretty much the set the bar for video game graphics. If they make a psp game, I'm curious on how it will look.
Kiltman67 @ Jun 16th 2008 8:19AM
Not sure how to feel about this. It's great that there's another developer getting interested in the PSP, but I'm a little meh over Crytek.
They seem to specialise in technically excellent games with absolutely no heart or soul.
It's the video game equivalent of driving an Audi.

I think Sony should enhance the other medias the psp is capable of, other than gaming. Release more applications, like the radios and make it so that people do not hack their psp's for homebrew, give us the tools to do things the homebew scene can, such as the ability to make simple 2D games. Give us more interactivity, thats what people want and buy. It worked for the DS and Wii.
Speech over
Maverick Saturn @ Jun 16th 2008 12:38PM
Crysis PSP!!! :)
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Jun 16th 2008 2:55PM
Maybe a Crysis spinoff like the Assassins Creed spinoff for DS?
Soo Jin (Yes, I'm a girl) @ Jun 16th 2008 2:21PM
Come on people! Do you really want more FPS's? Because that's all Crytek is going make. Aren't you boys (an some girls) sick and tired of FPS's?
Is that the only kind of game, western gamers enjoy playing? It seems that way to me. I can't stand FPS's. NO MORE!!!
Joe @ Jun 16th 2008 5:27PM
I really hope this is true because Cytek really pushed what the PC could do with Crisis and I would love to see what could be done with the PSP. The PSP may have lost RAD but Crytek will be just as great if not better then RAD.
rockeranimefreak @ Jun 18th 2008 11:48PM
CrySiS Portable! =) and just because a devs 1st two games are fps doesn't mean they can't make other types of games. Look ar Rare, they are famous for 007 goldeneye but they made other popular games like Banjo and Conker! so maybe a Safari game or sumthing lol.
