Sony voted most innovative brand
It's not surprising to see Sony top the list of a "most innovative brand" survey. With creations such as the Walkman, CDs, and Blu-ray, there hasn't been any other company that has left such a footprint in our media-driven pop culture. Consumers haven't forgotten these achievements, as a recent survey revealed that Sony was perceived the most innovative brand beating out the likes of Apple, Microsoft, and Nintendo.
The survey was conducted by branding consultancy Incite. 500 people between the ages of 18 and 65 took part in the British led poll. There were a lot of other big names on the list. Do you want to know what other companies Sony beat out? Check out the top 20 list after the break.

gamer @ Jun 16th 2008 2:44PM
Compact Discs CD are invented by Phillips!
CsMisi @ Jun 16th 2008 2:57PM
Well the CD was invented by Sony and Phillips together, it was started by a Phillips research, but they had developed together ...
TinyTim121 @ Jun 16th 2008 4:28PM
Well done Sony! *thump up*
Wow...i'm actually pretty impressed Sony beat all those companies, i thought people would vote more for Apple or Microsoft because of the popularity of the iPod and the computer.
ah well, this is great news either way; Well done Sony *two thumps up*

Have you forgotten about Playstation 1?
Getting over 100 million people interested in gaming takes incredible innovation. There would be no Xbox had Sony not introduced Playstation.
This is a pretty weak survey with only 500 people from one country.
tan @ Jun 16th 2008 3:18PM
and there would not be no playstation if nintendo hadn't shown intrest in the disc technology to start with!! lol

deaftly @ Jun 16th 2008 3:56PM
why wouldn't xbox eventually exist, that makes no sense whatsoever.
Big Ed @ Jun 16th 2008 4:13PM
There would be no playstation if Nintendo hadn't revived the game industry in the 80's.
Mo @ Jun 16th 2008 2:56PM
Actually, it was a joint venture between sony and philips.
Wonder why they were extra adamant about bluray :-)

Microsoft is not innovative at all, usually they just buy out or copy whatever they like.
I can, however, understand people perception of them being innovative.
Popfrogs @ Jun 16th 2008 3:26PM
True, Microsoft has resigned itself to the sidelines these days, waiting for someone else to innovate so they can copy it. Everything from the Xbox to Vista to the Zune screams "me too". Shameful really.
Vcize @ Jun 16th 2008 3:37PM
True, although strictly on the console front they have done some innovative things in the way of bringing hard drives to consoles and pioneering the online gameplay movement on consoles. As you say though, in general (Windows, Zune, etc) there is a lot of copying on their part.
Likewise for Sony though, especially lately. The PS3 really brought nothing innovative to the table, and blu-ray is just an evolution of DVD and launched alongside another product doing virtually the exact same thing. Throughout its history though, Sony has brought forth many new innovations, and copied many things as well...as is true with most of these companies up here.
thinkofmeasmra @ Jun 16th 2008 3:57PM
@Vcize
Ummm you forgot PS2 had an hdd before xbox was even out. Furthermore, putting a hdd in what is essentially a computer is not innovative no matter who did it first. Theres internal memory and memory cards which are all just basic forms of storage.
PS3 has so much innovation what are talking about. Theres the cell, it was the 1st system with hdmi (i think) and name another console that allows you to install mods for games (UT3) AND let them play with mouse and keyboard ala pc stlyle (also UT3), let alone install other operating systems. Even the heat dissipating system was pretty innovative as. The 7 spu's were also quite innovative as no other system is using a similar setup. Even down to six axis. I still sorta know what you mean though. But really we just overlook many of these little innovative things.
4thcage @ Jun 16th 2008 3:15PM
DELL? Dell innovative in what?!
tan @ Jun 16th 2008 3:20PM
tbh with eveyone i do think apple should just be at the top.
Alex @ Jun 16th 2008 7:12PM
I second that
Alex @ Jun 16th 2008 6:24PM
I second that
roger @ Jun 17th 2008 4:25PM
i knew an apple boy would say something!!!!! I think apple just know how to design things very well but that's about all... Since the ipod there wasn't that much till iphone, which is a spin on what they have!!
tan @ Jun 17th 2008 7:32PM
lol you do realise i actually own nothing made by apple except my old 80gb which broke=[
Andrew @ Jun 16th 2008 3:53PM
Yes my fav brand is #1[SONY]
farfisa @ Jun 16th 2008 3:41PM
It's those "This is Living" ads they run over there.
And Dyson? I mean, great vacuums, but they're.... vacuums.
Bigredend @ Jun 16th 2008 4:24PM
thinkofmeasmra.........Ps2 had an HDD ? I must've missed that and the HDMI
benny boy @ Jun 16th 2008 4:27PM
wtf is Tesco doing there?? It's a supermarket. Hardly innovative. It's more of a survey of who is the best known brand.
Sony do have quite innovative advertisements though like the one with the balls bouncing down the hill, the paint explosions and the recent foam-filled one to advertise their TVs and cameras.
LS @ Jun 16th 2008 7:59PM
Woah there cowboy, steady on, you almost left Virgin out of the party. I haven't a clue what either of those monstrous brands innovate in other than the shameless pursuit of profit.
SOCOMRAIDER @ Jun 16th 2008 5:43PM
With all the "if it wasn't for" going around. Which really doesn't mean much, who knows how things might have played out differently. But I'll give it a shot. Nintendo wouldn't have revived the game industry if Ralph Bear didn't make the first console to make an industry. There wouldn't be a first console if Computer Space and following arcade games came out. etc. etc....
Whoppy @ Jun 16th 2008 5:43PM
Hardware wise I do like Sony products, software wise they suck... badly. I don't mean games but things like the original XMB (which is now much better) or SonicStage which never got better :D
BT at 19 though? Phorm tracking is innovative?
Draco @ Jun 16th 2008 6:33PM
This is not much of a suprise, actually it is a bit, seems everyone salivates over anything Apple these days, seems I am the only one who dislikes the fruit.
Marrvia @ Jun 16th 2008 6:43PM
please tell me Apple isn't on that list because to the Ipod. They didn't invent mp3 players, there were just the most successful in marketing. Success doesn't spell innovation.
The_Doctor @ Jun 16th 2008 6:43PM
well done Sony... another well deserved achievement. I'm also quite happy/surprised to see that Honda overtook Toyota.
Cian @ Jun 16th 2008 7:28PM
Dyson should be number one... I mean comeon, it runs on a ball instead of wheels! A BALL!
Des @ Jun 17th 2008 12:45PM
LOL They got balls... I second this!
Jean Sebastien @ Jun 16th 2008 8:30PM
wheres sega in all that!?
sleepyf1 @ Jun 16th 2008 11:09PM
They need to clarify what is meant by innovative. There is a difference between inventing a product vs pioneering it for market viability and distribution. Or it could be just introducing a new way of doing business.
Sony does have a very rich history of pushing new technology into the market, successfully or not. Though they didn't invent DVDs, the PS2 was a key factor in the adoption of the DVD format.
db cooper @ Jun 17th 2008 9:00AM
Putting a hidden CD-ROM device driver/rootkit on audio CDs was indeed quite innovative. Well done, Sony. Kudos.
dlemay69 @ Jun 17th 2008 9:29AM
The list is all wrong. First, Apple should be at the top. Second, how is it possible that Sony is more innovative than Nintendo? Don't get me wrong, I love Sony, but really, Sony is the last company on my mind when someone asks about innovation. Microsoft? Everything Microsoft has ever done has copied someone else, or "purchased" the innovation from somewhere else. Dell's business is built around the exact same model, so they should get a ZERO for innovation.
Alien @ Jun 17th 2008 2:07PM
Well Im not surprised ... they shore know their tech :D
jacob @ Jul 1st 2008 5:03AM
NO I am not an ipod freak, I dont even own one, but I am willing to admit that the MACBOOK AIR makes apple deserve this one. Don't get me wrong, I love sony, as a matter of fact, I'm writing this on my PS3. Come on though 500 people couln't tell m any different...
