Charts reveal slowing PSN release schedule
Does it feel like the PSN is providing us with less digitally distributed games than before? It does to us, and it appears that the feeling is not unwarranted. Gamasutra compiled a few charts, analyzing the PSN, and revealed that the PS3 is offering far less playable content before. 2007 offered 17 PS1 games for download and 28 downloadable titles, which included classics like Super Stardust HD and Everyday Shooter. To date, the first half of 2008 has only featured 4 PS1 games and 8 downloadable games for the PS3 (two of which are multiplatform Capcom releases).
PSN games are coming, and the ones we know about look enticing. On the radar, we have WipEout HD, SIREN: Blood Curse, Elefunk, flOwer, SOCOM: Confrontation and PixelJunk Eden. This week will mark the release of Fatal Inertia EX. The PSN is still alive and kicking, but we can't help but want even more games to download.

Way to skew plainly obvious figures. Other than the launch month for PS1 downloadable titles, the rate of PS1 releases have been quite steady over the long haul. And obviously PSP downloadable titles have went up, but there's no mention of that either.
Darren Tilley @ Jun 17th 2008 12:32PM
Additionally we are only six months into 08, and very much on track to match, or beat the 17 PS3 releases of 2007.
Most pointless analysis every.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jun 17th 2008 6:12PM
you read it wrong Tilley. that was 17 PS1 games and 28 PS3 games. 8 PS3 games in 6 months is not on pace to reach 28 by years end.
Darren Tilley @ Jun 17th 2008 10:06PM
Yeah, I realized that after I wrote it, and was waiting for someone to call me on it.
I still think it's a worthless study. You can see very clearly that one freak month last year skewed all the figures. Other than that, the figures seem pretty consistent.
justinb @ Jun 17th 2008 12:30PM
I personally think the reason there were more last year is they had to get some out and ready for all the PS3 buyers. This is the same rate I think they are going to carry on from now on. So be expecting it to stay that way. Just IMO.
adolson @ Jun 17th 2008 12:38PM
Yes, we need more. And we need at least one or two vertical-scrolling shooters (Star Soldier, Ikaruga, that sort of game) in addition to the 1942 Joint Strike which is coming down the line... Man, there aren't ANY on there right now.. :\
Fiddlesworth @ Jun 17th 2008 12:57PM
WipEout HD, SIREN: Blood Curse, Elefunk, flOwer, SOCOM: Confrontation and PixelJunk Eden, Fatal Inertia EX.
These all look like high quality games. I'd rather have this quality than dozens of crap games.
Devin @ Jun 17th 2008 1:10PM
That's what I was gonna say. As long as the releases are WORTH playing, the rate at which they are releasing is fine to me. Heck, my g/f and I are still playing PJ:M and she bought it what feels like forever ago.
Devin @ Jun 17th 2008 1:11PM
Ditto.
Brodie-san @ Jun 17th 2008 12:57PM
Please! No more games! My girlfriend is going to leave/kill me !
:)
Maverick Saturn @ Jun 17th 2008 1:06PM
More PS1 games please, can't they at least dedicate a group of Sony people to put up PS1 games ¬_¬ So I look on the store on thursday and actually see more then 1 new addition or 1 compared to last week's 0 isn't always a bad thing.
Dan Davis @ Jun 17th 2008 1:09PM
You know what we really need? More top down shooters and Crach Bandicoot games!
Oh wait, this isn't opposite day?
Christian @ Jun 17th 2008 1:11PM
Yes, nothing more valuable with an online poll with a 'Do you want more question'..........
Devin @ Jun 17th 2008 1:17PM
Exactly, who wouldn't mind having more high quality games? especially at affordable prices.
Sorrow880 @ Jun 17th 2008 1:25PM
I want real freaking games. Not this stupid mini-game garbage. Bring me JRPG's or bring me nothing. My $$$ won't go to these garbage, casual games anymore.
Eggy @ Jun 17th 2008 1:31PM
Of course I want more. But please quality over quantity.
anon @ Jun 17th 2008 1:45PM
WE NEED MGS1 FOR PSP/PS3... now.
BBCorps @ Jun 17th 2008 7:55PM
I agree and dont forget metal gear I and II in hd!!!! ^.^
PS3Darklighter @ Jun 17th 2008 1:53PM
Digital distribution is the single worst thing that has ever happened to gaming. Game companies found a way to screw over consumers by trying to sell them something that does not even exist. I would rather pay 60 for a collection of PS1 games actually released on a blu ray. I for one cannot wait until this fad (and that is all that downloading is) ends once and for all.
jtedesco33 @ Jun 17th 2008 2:43PM
I highly doubt this "fad" as you call it is anywhere near it's way out.
Popfrogs @ Jun 17th 2008 2:56PM
At least Sony is being liberal with some PSN titles like Warhawk and GT5:Prologue also for sale on Blu-ray. I agree though, large titles should come on a disc that you can turn around and sell or loan to your friends. That's the biggest drawback to all this digital nonsense, you have no sharing or selling rights.
Steve @ Jun 18th 2008 9:09AM
Wasn't Syphon Filter just released last week? There should be a PS1 game under June.
HektikLyfe @ Jun 17th 2008 2:46PM
What idiots are saying the PS3 has enough of ANYTHING!?!?
Hey PlayStation 3 owners want more games?
"Uh, no." ??????
LJ @ Jun 17th 2008 3:19PM
It had to be Andrew... another stupid piece "news" which makes no sense but of course he felt the urge to share with all of us.
They realesed 10 games in the same month last year... its not something that will happen every year. anyways i think will get more than 10 PS1 games.. true we should get more like the Japan Store is... but more than 10 is good for me.
jayj @ Jun 17th 2008 4:21PM
i only want more of the smaller type games for $5.
hate like this idea of "episodic games" where it's just a retail game sold in pieces, you spend your money and then you can't resell it after you're done with it.
Michael Jennings-Offen @ Jun 17th 2008 6:14PM
The PSN is the weakest link in the PS3 world. I would love to see a lot more arcade classics and even ports from other systems a la xbox live and even the virtual console. Comeon Sony, get it together!
Eggy @ Jun 17th 2008 6:59PM
XBLA is mostly crap though. VC are Nintendo titles and you want them on the PS3? Go buy a Wii already.
freker @ Jun 18th 2008 10:28AM
I have to admit, I'm a fool for getting PSN games, its so awesome to have games downloaded on your consoles harddrive and PSN games are actually a really good deal. I've amazed friends with FlOw and Super Stardust HD. I love the selection of games and am also quietly waiting for classics PSone like Rollcage (and stage 2) and Tekken 3 and more multiplayer games. Its also great that the PSone games can be played on PSP and shared.
Looking forward to Ratchets Quest for Booty especially. Whatever it is, I need Ratchet.
Only complaint with PS3 so far: Jak 1, and the PS2 Ratchet and Clanks don't work on EU 60gb PS3's with backwards compat. Apart from that alls cool.
Looking forward to mega update soon. :D
