Bah...
Lars @ Jun 19th 2008 7:01PM
When I heard that it was just gonna be a websearch from XMB thing, I thought "yawn" too.
I mean it's great to see them continuing with improvements, years after it launched. And I do use the web browser with some frequency. But, that's it?
...
OK, after checking it out for myself, I'm a little more impressed. The search is a tad faster than doing a regular google search, and you can save the searches right on the XMB (which I really like).
I didn't realize it also included video playback tweaks... It's about freakin time! That's a feature I've been wanting for a long time.
joey @ Jun 18th 2008 10:22AM
This is the best they can do for an integer software update.
Give me a decent web browser. If the iPhone can do it, you can do it too.
theMediaman @ Jun 18th 2008 10:33AM
Does this mark the death of development for the PSP?
Kryptinite @ Jun 18th 2008 10:37AM
That's it? What a waste for a 4.00 release
Kafka @ Jun 18th 2008 10:42AM
V. 4.01
-Adding a shortcut to McDonalds.com to the XMB.
-Support for PLAYSTATION Network titles has been expanded.
V. 4.05
-Fixing Bugs with the McDonalds.com shortcut.
-Support for PLAYSTATION Network titles has been expanded.
V. 4.10
-Allowing PSP-Owners to adding their own personal nonsense corporate commercials to the XMB.
-Support for PLAYSTATION Network titles has been expanded (but this time for real).
V. 4.16
-Support for the support for PLAYSTATION Network titles has been expanded.
V. 4.17
-Support for PLAYSTATION Network titles has been decreased.
V. 4.36
-Adding ICQ-connectivity under [Network]; PSP-keyboard promised "soon".
-Support for PLAYSTATION Network titles has been ridicously expanded.
V. 4.50
-Adding a WordPad-like feature under [Network] for writhing eMails on the go; again, PSP-keyboard promised to be released "soon", propably before the first Man lands on the Mars.
V. 4.51
-Support for PLAYSTATION Network titles has been expanded.
V. 4.52
-Nothing, Sony just celebrates the first PLAYSTATION Network game that doesn't require a firmware update to work without any problems.
V. 4.56
-Support for PLAYSTATION Network titles has been expanded, since firmware V 4.52 caused many bugs.
Ted @ Jun 18th 2008 10:48AM
Kafka, your too funny.
Andrew Yoon @ Jun 18th 2008 11:18AM
LOL. Can't wait for McDonald's yumminess!
Don @ Jun 18th 2008 1:59PM
Unfortunately, Kafka nailed it.
David @ Jun 18th 2008 10:47AM
Lmao that pretty much sums all up.
Alien @ Jun 18th 2008 10:47AM
Well IMO its a pretty good update ... not the best , but Google is great :D
Otsego_Undead @ Jun 18th 2008 12:11PM
are you serious? a friggin shortcut for a major release number like a X.0? So tell me, whats your salary over at the rainbow G?
Alien @ Jun 18th 2008 1:24PM
Well its still better than what we usually get . And yes , even tough I wont use that movie search thing to much , the google , built-in search engine is pretty nice , especially because I dont need to torn up my freakin' PC every time I want to search a a pity thing or something ...
Ed @ Jun 18th 2008 10:48AM
If they're going to focus on the Internet capabilities, they need to add the ability to use the memory stick as virtual memory for browsing. Internal memory is just too limited to do any sort of decent web surfing. PS Store access without a PC middleman would have been nice too.
I'd also love to see Sony embrace something like Microsoft's XNA for homebrew apps and games. It's a shame to see such potential in this platform wasted.
strike @ Jun 18th 2008 10:59AM
Yay, more voting!
No! Bad update!
It's not that bad, I guess, but it's definitely not what I would expect of an X.00 update.
I think this should have been more like 3.99. If only Sony took an opinion poll on what people would actually want in the next update, then maybe they'll get more ideas. Have Sony given up? Probably :(
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Jun 18th 2008 11:03AM
Why be able to control video playback speed but not music????
Smokey @ Jun 18th 2008 11:11AM
Rubbish, is all I can say, maybe I should invest in a pandora battery and magic stick
strike @ Jun 18th 2008 11:15AM
You dont need both of them, do you?
Smokey @ Jun 18th 2008 8:15PM
you do for a slim, which is what i have pretty sure
gamertilldeath @ Jun 18th 2008 11:17AM
So much for DivX in 4.0 :(
Neuromancer @ Jun 18th 2008 11:19AM
I'm a new PSPowner so I didn't know what to expect from these updates. I'm still sort of disappointed somehow though.
Ant @ Jun 18th 2008 2:18PM
Well, the firmware history was pretty strong, but now SCE arent really listening to us anymore. Guess they though the PSP Slim was enough to make us happy...
Poozle @ Jun 18th 2008 11:28AM
Ok, I'm not usually one to complain or say something pointless but surely in a major point release adding google search and speeding up video isn't really worth it. I think I'd have rather waited for a proper update. I wonder if we'll see an M33 release of this...
required @ Jun 18th 2008 11:49AM
We've had these features for some time now. I've had google bookmarked and video playback speed has always worked. Is this a joke? Is the next firmware going to allow changing screen brightness and adjust the volume?
Jacksons @ Jun 18th 2008 11:24PM
It's actual video playback speed, not fast forward or reverse. I don't really have a use to watch videos at half or double speed, but that's another story!
required @ Jun 18th 2008 11:51PM
we've always been able to play video back in slow motion
Espiox @ Jun 18th 2008 12:44PM
I have to say, I find the cries of "oh noes! corporate branding on the XMB!!" to be pretty funny, and ignorant. The Google logo or name only appears as a tiny logo in the top corner of the results page. Not on the XMB at all.
My guess? Sony just didn't want to have to build their own search engine for the sake of a small (but somewhat convenient) PSP feature, so they used an existing one.
112358 @ Jun 18th 2008 12:49PM
WHAT???!!!!!?!!!?!?!?!.....you GOT to be kidding me.....two months of nothing and then this?.............
Ant @ Jun 18th 2008 2:18PM
Hmm, didnt I hear some people say there was gonna be a suprise addition to this update?......... Well?....
cpugenuis @ Jun 18th 2008 2:42PM
CRAP, it froze my psp!!!! DARN YOU 4.00!!!!!!!!!!
even worse is that i didn't have any CFW or stuff on it, now it just won't work!!!!
My Lunch @ Jun 18th 2008 2:34PM
Aight, ive got a question. Im new to the psp thing. How is he playing Grid on his psp? Stupid question maybe.... please inform my child like mind.
mark @ Jun 18th 2008 3:05PM
he's just playing a video. that's why he's adjusting the speed, which is the new feature of the update. he's not really playing anything
h0mi @ Jun 18th 2008 3:32PM
Shouldn't there be a 4.XX which undoes the tmobile promotion code, since that promotion for free wifi is long gone?
get2joe @ Jun 18th 2008 4:20PM
making google gears work with netfront browser would have been better then giving a search box in the XMB.
kaosdragon @ Jun 18th 2008 4:29PM
wow, ps fanboys mad at the psp for its crappy firmware updates.... I sold my psp because it was boring (will probally rebuy it as soon as the "GPS" comes out.... Or mod it for good ol' snes games) =D
injate @ Jun 18th 2008 5:10PM
SIGNAL DARK ALEX IN 3..2...1
endCtrl @ Jun 18th 2008 5:21PM
I was really looking forward to divx support. This is balls. Very disappointed sony. Just for that I will use my pandora's battery on any psp that finds it's way to me.
redbrick @ Jun 18th 2008 5:48PM
without WPA2 support...I can't even use the google search. I don't know anyone who likes to watch their movies fast or slow.....just normal.
Hmmm...this just adds to the mountain of commercial crapware thats out there...and now Sony seems to be endorsing this effort. So back to why folks pirate your games again?????
nomad @ Jun 18th 2008 7:51PM
yes it is time to go cfw. sony has got some brain damage and there is no cure. sony can go to hell after this 4.00. they think we are dumb and would not notice all this crapy stuff they have been throwing at us. i wonder if they think that we are sitting here and saying o joy google, oh joy slow motion, lol. not!
Daniel @ Jun 18th 2008 11:51PM
Wow you guys act like Sony owes you something. It's a FREE update for a machine YOU bought. If you don't like it, sell the damn thing and quit bitching. I agree that for a major release this is fairly poor but at the same time it's FREE and they don't HAVE to add anything. Be greatful for what you get or just don't even play the PSP. Geez. Calm down everyone. You're all a bunch of whiny babies. If I were head of Sony I wouldn't give you idiots anything.
poita @ Jun 19th 2008 9:05AM
Daniel, a free update? Are you really that naive? Sorry to break it to you but Sony doesn't make new firmware out of the goodness of their heart.
The cost of developing new firmware is built into the licensing fees that they charge the developers/third party accesories manufacturers. Those costs are then passed on to us in the games and accessories that we buy. We ARE (indirectly) paying for and supporting these firmware updates with our purchases. If people want to complain about releases that they helped fund then who are you to tell them that they can't?
Additionally, Sony has always marketed the PSP as a system that will grow and get better over time, many people here (myself included) bought one because there were a few good games, but more importantly there was a huge amount of potential for the system.
Lars @ Jun 19th 2008 7:20PM
I agree with Daniel. I just don't understand you supposed "fanboys" crying "waaah, I got extra features on my PSP."
Game sales fund this kind of stuff, and game sales for the PSP have not been good due to rampant piracy. Hell, half of you in this thread have talked about pirating games... That's a big problem.
I also agree that I expect Sony's stuff to grow over time, since that's partly what they're known for, and IT HAS. Compare FW 1.0 to 4.0... 'nuff said. Be grateful they add stuff to their portable at all, because they're the ONLY ones doing this. How much has the DS grown since it was released? None. It's a ok little toy, but still the same little toy it was when it launched.
You wanna bring the iPhone into the argument? Fine... Would you also be willing to pay $500 for the PSP, plus $100 a month in service fees? Cause that's what pays for their updates. I wouldn't! That's why I have a plain old phone, and not some contractual ball-and-chain phone, that eats money like cheesy poofs.
andwhyisit @ Jun 18th 2008 11:53PM
This should have been 3.97 not 4.00. Even 3.95 with one wanted feature (ps1 button config) was a more worthy candidate for 4.00 than this. *sigh*
I was expecting something more ordinary but this is beyond pathetic.
Lets see if Dark AleX can find any hidden features in this firmware.
bigboy88 @ Jun 20th 2008 7:21AM
Well, 3.95 did hav glitches(Dark_AleX said so on "alek.dark-alex.org/pspwiki"). So, I'm pretty happy I changed FWs. Also, if any nerds hav a PSP, they can use Internet Search 2 help them study.
C.J. Rector @ Jun 19th 2008 11:54AM
After all this crap about how were going to get youtube and plenty of goodies, we get a friggen search bar!
Paul @ Jun 19th 2008 4:22PM
yay new Sony PSP software! How about some good games?
http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B000UA0LXQ/pasbl01-20/
Frac @ Jun 20th 2008 10:15AM
I was really looking forward to all the hopes that 4.00 was supposed to bring. Then as time went along and those ideas were said to be dropped I wondered what it really would bring.
With the version of Flash that comes with the device so horribly out of date I was hoping that we would see some sort of update there but no luck. I was hoping that they would somehow make the web browser in general faster (some have suggested virtual memory off the stick) but no luck there either.
Either way I figured that we'd at least get something, useful? Playing video faster and a search feature.... Seriously? Umm the search feather is solved by making Google your homepage and I don't really know why I'd want to watch a movie at twice speed? Really I'm not so much disappointed that they gave us crap but that they, as a company, wasted development dollars on lame features no one asked for when there were so many other ideas they could have worked on.
skate6566 @ Jun 20th 2008 10:02AM
LAME!
This is crap!
I wanted all the happy crap there was to be said for it.
And you people who say that we should be happy we even get an update, that we pay for the update and whatnot. Here's what I say! Exactly! We pay for the update, make it something worthwhile. Not freaking google. Come on, sony! I think I'll be doing custom firmware this weekend, just to shove it in Sony's face.
hiVe @ Jun 21st 2008 12:38AM
I agree with Poita 100%, you've got a very accurate opinion.
This update is practically worthless, they could rather mark it 3.99 or something and announce "their extended support of faging playstation network titles" and "security updates" in the official notes.
At least that way much less people would whine (including me).
But this? for a 4.00 for which I was waiting like 2~3 months since 3.95 and 3.96 brought sh1t? c'mon i'm utterly frustrated if I think about it!
PSP has a lot more potential, its been touted for "ages", and we can see a proof of that in CFW releases...darn! The system is 4 years old already, its not gonna be arround for ethernity!
For instance, i'd like to configure the damn buttons in the music player (L+R are annoying) so perhaps in 2010 sony will finally let me do this?
They weren't even able to do anything comparably good so far.
Summing it up: slow development = dead platform
LudAcris @ Jun 23rd 2008 5:56AM
