Japan getting MGO stand-alone Blu-ray; expansion pack coming in late July

The blurb for the game reveals a vague date for the first Metal Gear Online expansion, which could be available in late July. Obviously there's no word on what the expansion will contain, but we're hoping for a couple more levels and/or gameplay modes. To be honest, we'll take anything we can get. MGO is already a great game in its own right and any expansions will be gratefully received.

I predict No Buys

I agree with you. As amazing as MGS4 single player is (probably best game in history), MGO just is not my type of game. Its a bit to slow and boring for my taste.
xrich @ Jun 18th 2008 11:38PM
thats about $16 US...i might buy that since i don't have mgs4 yet and i can just borrow the game from a friend to do the single player game...
True_Darknight @ Jun 18th 2008 3:56PM
As it has been proven from before. Japonese gamers tend to buy certain games in droves... games we wouldn't. So yes it makes sense over there in MGS land.
And so maybe some people don't like the Single player and just want multiplayer....
And they hate downloads!
Eddie @ Jun 18th 2008 6:25PM
Yeah, the Japanese game market is NOT the US market. This could be a total hit.
Don't know why, but that's my bet.
TriFF51 @ Jun 18th 2008 4:00PM
I assume the mode Team Sneak (one entire team equipt with octocamo trying to get to some objective )will come with the first update....its in the strategy guide but its the only one missing from MGO right now.
reson8er @ Jun 18th 2008 4:09PM
Well... here are some counterpoints for ya.
1. FPS are generally not popular in Japan. (MGO is TPS)
2. Japanese players tend to like physical copies of games, though why this is being marketed separately is still beyond me.
3. The disk is roughly $18.00. If you are just not into single players MGS4 (blasphemy!) then this is a good deal.
Binaryfiend @ Jun 18th 2008 4:09PM
or maybe someone who wants to play MGS against his friends but doesn't have enough dough for the full product? I dunno. Just a guess.
a.j. @ Jun 18th 2008 4:19PM
i dig MGO, play it all the time. def. an acquired taste but i think it's good fun.
wisconsinista @ Jun 18th 2008 4:35PM
MGO -where you can empty an entire clip into an enemy as they walk up to you before they proceed to grab you, throw you to the ground and fool around with your body for 30-45 seconds. Has anyone ever gotten the scan plug to work? I've wasted too many brain cells and time trying to get that thing to work.
kentuckyfried @ Jun 18th 2008 7:46PM
I usually get head-shot by somebody downtown before I can get close enough to grab anybody. I'm looking forward to trying the S-plug a bit more though once I get better at sneaking around....
The G Fatha @ Jun 18th 2008 4:42PM
In the strategy guide they have a game mode listed thats not even in mgo right now, team sneak. Hopefully they throw that in there soon, and hopefully a shadow moses map long with it.

Finished the SP last night, so I'll get back into MGO tonight, see if my skills from the Beta have gone rusty yet, I played iot right till the last minute of the Beta and have been missing it. More maps I'll buy, more voices and extra character design slots, I won't.
rvdondapc @ Jun 18th 2008 4:56PM
It could be possible for friends to share a single player game and just take turns beating it. Or Maybe someone doesn't want to shell out $60 for MGS4 but their friend has it and they keep telling them to get it so they can play online. I'm sure there will be some people who are willing to spend $18 for a game to play with friends but not $60. That is cheaper than any game besides cheap PSN downloads. Sony is probably thinking they want to sell the expansions to these guys so we'll get them in the MGO mix by just selling them the online game cheap.
Volomon @ Jun 18th 2008 5:00PM
Hate to think for you guys, but...Japanese are prone to microtransactions. Well asians pretty much. Whether it be a new pair of pants for their avatar or a new hair-do for their virtual miis (xbox reference).
Hence it makes sense to do this for the Japanese market. Its keep enough to get them hooked. Then makes its money through microtransactions. This is actually 50% of their marketing, aka money making strategy. The reason why they can afford to be console exclusive.

Mass generalizations FTL =/
Brett from Atlanta @ Jun 18th 2008 7:49PM
Shit, I can't even log on to MGO, after trying different login combinations about 3 or 4 times, I officially wrote it off. When it decides to use just my psn id, maybe ill try it.
Dwag @ Jun 18th 2008 7:18PM
If this comes to the US this will be $40.
for ppl who say this is a no buy I'll buy it due to the recent infomation that MGS4 is not really that long(also I have family and friends who'll let me borrow the game so I'm good) and if they sell the Multiplayer alone for cheap I'm buying.
RazLeboL @ Jun 18th 2008 7:36PM
I'd buy it if it comes with the expansion pack and other bonus stuff just so that I don't have to load the SP game first and then choose MGO in the menu and then wait again for it to load.
Big bonus if it has nice art ;)
kentuckyfried @ Jun 18th 2008 7:48PM
It is a bit baffling as to why MGO is being sold as a separate disk to MGO. It could be the fact that maybe the Japanese version of MGS4 does not include the starter pack? (can anybody confirm that or not)?
ScubaDragon @ Jun 27th 2008 11:17AM
I live in Japan and have the Japanese MGS4. Yes, it does come with the Online starter pack. But for some reason the single player mode is only in Japanese (the online bit is all in English) and there is no way to switch from Japanese to English! What's the point of having all that space on a Blue Ray disk if they're not going to use it to store multiple languages. I spent 8000yen for the Limited Edition, only to find out that I can't enjoy the story part of the single player mode. So now I ordered the US version, just to be able to enjoy the story, but will sell my Jp copy back to the store for about 1/2 of what I paid for it. Thanks a lot Konami!!
antaru @ Jun 19th 2008 8:24AM
So the first expansion is on the way already.
I wish they'd figure out something for europians living in smaller countries, like me.
No PS Store, no new stages or characters for us.
Even if it's directly from Konami.
At least they should introduce the point cards and let us buy things in the UK Store.......
stacy daniels @ Jun 19th 2008 10:34AM
i love MGO...so will be all over this..
